Results for Qualifying 1

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.408/202.97, Now #1
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.450/210.18, Now #2
7:24 PM Both cars had the wheels up on the launch, Janis taking a longer route to the finish line but getting there quicker, the two dead-even at half track.
Left Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 6.797/164.41, Now #4
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.454/222.11, Now #3
Hahn's car left softly, a 1.077 60-foot time, then recovered with a good run from there on. Brinsfield's car was slow off the line and there was a flash of flame at about 1,000 feet, the car coasting across the finish line.
Left Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.730/207.08, Now #4
Right Lane: Sal Passarelli Runs 6.895/212.66, Now #6
Both cars had problems getting cleanly off the starting l;ine, O'Dell heading for the Christmas tree and Passarelli toward the wall.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.346/221.51, Now #1
Right Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.578/211.41, Now #5
Spiering is in the old "Tin Indian" '33 Willys, sporting Cutler-Hammer sponsorship. He made a good run, but close to the wall, while Stott went right down the groove.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.599/216.71, Now #7
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.292/222.55, Now #1
Quain gets the family bragging rights tonight, a pretty run to one-up his brother. Billes had problems in the first 300 feet, hurting his ET.
Left Lane: Matt Tolbert Runs 6.584/231.42, Now #8
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.340/221.23, Now #2
The 'Bird is back, running a blown Hemi engine. The big blue Super Bird made a good pass, straight and clean, but Vick just ran away from him with a very nice effort.
      Left Lane: Michael D Lockwood
                                  Runs 6.461/217.49, Now #8
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.395/218.23, Now #4
Lockwood made a good pass, but Hood did a great job of driving to get there first, Hood's '63 Corvette very loose and all over the first half of the lane.
Left Lane: Chris Cline Runs 6.580/199.20, Now #11
Right Lane: William Rojas Runs 6.451/201.11, Now #7
Two good runs...
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.490/195.65, Now #10
Right Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 8.502/118.76, Now #18
Kammes' Corvette turned hard left on the launch, shaking violently, and he had to get completely out of the throttle to save the car. Pittman's car was loose for the first half of the run.
Left Lane: Ed Wasserbeck Runs 6.922/208.18, Now #18
Right Lane: Mike Stawicki Runs 6.976/199.07, Now #19
Two more shaky launches.
Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.355/220.96, Now #4
Right Lane: David Roemer Runs 18.326/41.47, Now #22
Critchley did a very nice job of driving, the car trying very hard to get out of the groove on both sides of the lane. Roemer shook hard and coasted through.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 10.065/89.86, Now #23
Right Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.365/201.70, Now #5
Hoover slowed immediately with - you guessed it - shake. Nice, smooth, relatively straight pass by Moyer, solidly in the field.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 13.656/66.01, Now #25
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 7.112/140.66, Now #22
Martin shook hard and shut it down. King left hard and it sounded like he either went through the clutch or the transmission wouldn't shift, the RPMs way up and staying there.
Left Lane: Todd Howard Runs 20.352/36.74, Now #28
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 14.763/51.31, Now #26
Howard's Bel Air turned hard right and Castellana's turned hard left, the two headed for a meeting just past the Christmas tree, and both drivers shut it down and coasted through.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 9.204/92.44, Now #24
Right Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 14.556/54.04, Now #27
Two more with hard shake, coasting through.
Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.404/217.49, Now #7
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 15.908/43.91, Now #30
Last pair of a shaky round. Cossis figures it out and makes a clean run, but Jenkins shook very hard and coasted through.

Results for Qualifying 2

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.392/217.28, Now #6
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.436/216.71, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.404/217.49, Was #7
2:47 PM Jenkins was shooting at Matt Tolbert's 6.584 and easily bettered that. No help for Cossis. Now the bump is Chris Cline's 6.580.
Left Lane: Tony Pontieri Runs 6.711/210.82, Now #19
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.814/196.89, Now #22
                                  No Prior Run
Both cars here were well off the mark after reasonable 1.05 60-foot times on the launch. From the top comes the call, "We've got oil." The spotter is standing in the left lane, so it was Pontieri's car that did the dirty deed, reported as differential grease.
Left Lane: Chip King No Time, Now #30
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Mike Lockwood Runs 8.939/101.38, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.461/217.49, Was #13
King's car wouldn't go into reverse after the burnout, so he had to drive it out the other end before Lockwood could launch. Lockwood's car got out of shape and over near the centerline, so he gave it up.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 11.837/69.81, Now #26
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Todd Howard Runs 6.364/218.34, Now #5
                                  No Prior Run
Castellana's left rear tire chattered and spun, the right bit, so the car turned hard left immediately. Nice run by Howard, clean, straight, and quick, bumping Cline. Now the bump time is Carl Spiering's 6.578.
Left Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.454/189.23, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.365/201.70, Was #6
Right Lane: Chris Cline No Time, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.580/199.20, Was #17
Cline broke on the launch, the car moving a few feet and stopping. Moyer had the laundry out very early, apparently knowing this pass wasn't as good as the one he made yesterday.
Left Lane: David Roemer Runs 6.630/212.96, Now #20
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 6.796/151.66, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.797/164.41, Was #22
Brinsfield was on a good pass, but there was a flash of flame as he passed half track and the chutes were out well before the finish line.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.523/219.13, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.454/222.11, Was #13
Right Lane: Matt Tolbert Runs 6.421/216.50, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.584/213.42, Was #18
Something came off Tolbert's car on the burnout, a small square panel that slid across the left lane. Didn't hurt the run, however, a career-best ET for Tolbert by over a tenth of a second, the bug blue "Bird" right down the groove.
Left Lane: William Rojas Runs 6.522/192.81, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.451/201.11, Was #13
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.439/217.54, Now #12
                                  No Prior Run
Rojas took the crooked route for the first half of the run and failed to improve, but Hoover made a nice run, straight and smooth, to move into the field, bumping Alan Pittman. That puts Lockwood on the bubble at 6.461seconds.
Left Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.356/221.83, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.340/221.23, Was #2
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.361/222.16, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.408/202.97, Was #10
Nice job of driving by Vick, his car spinning the tires and skating to the left, toward the wall. He never lifted and smoothly brought the car back to the groove. Good straight run by Janis.
Left Lane: Mike Stawicki Runs 6.664/214.28, Now #23
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ed Wasserbeck Runs 6.640/209.49, Now #22
                                  No Prior Run
Not much to say here...
Left Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 6.596/211.76, Now #20
Best prior run: 8.502/118.76, Was #29
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 7.682/131.29, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.346/221.51, Was #3
left immediately. Stott threw in the towel before the 1,000-foot marker.
Left Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.509/215.05, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.395/218.23, Was #9
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.326/221.56, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.599/216.71, Was #21
Hood shook hard on the launch and fell back early against Billes' great pass, straight and smooth, the Canadian pleasing the crowd while bumping Lockwood. Now the bump time is Fred Hahn's 6.454.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.329/212.26, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.292/222.55, Was #1
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.563/191.69, Now #19
                                  No Prior Run
Stott runs low ET of the round so far, a nice pass off a 1.03 60-foot time.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 12.177/65.18, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.450/210.18, Was #14
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.291/219.83, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.490/195.65, Was #18
Athey's '51 Mercury headed for the wall on the launch and he had to lift. Pittman ran low ET of the weekend to get in, bumping Hahn. Now the bump time is Rojas' 6.451.
Left Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.677/209.64, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.578/211.41, Was #20
Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.441/206.56, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.355/220.96, Was #6
Spiering's '33 Willys was chattering and dancing for the first 300 feet, not a good way to get started.
Right Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.722/208.52, Now #27
Best prior run: 6.730/207.08, Was #27
O'Dell had to lift and make a major course correction about 400 feet out, killing his ET. That's it for now, hopefully they will get one more shot tonight. Right now it's partly cloudy and we like it that way.

Results for Qualifying 3

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Mopar
Pro Modified at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by
Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in
order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to
run:

Left Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 7.548/124.56, Now #27
Best prior run: 6.722/208.52, Was #27
Right Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.582/210.57, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.578/211.41, Was #20
11:02 PM The bump as we start is William Rojas' 6.451. O'Dell's car first almost hit the wall and then almost crossed the centerline, all over the lane. Spiering went straight down the lane, but off the pace all the way.
Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.294/220.10, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.355/220.96, Was #6
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.365/218.87, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.450/210.18, Was #15
Two good driving jobs here, both cars trying to get away and both drivers ruling with an iron hand to salvage their runs. They were dead-even at 330 feet and then Critchley pulled away from his 2000-season ride.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 10.119/83.30, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.291/219.83, Was #1
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 14.448/56.12, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.292/222.55, Was #2
Both cars left hard, wheels up, and each headed for the centerline. Both drivers maintained control by shutting down and coasting through.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 6.677/199.15, Now #26
Best prior run: 6.814/196.89, Was #29
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.418/222.82, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.454/222.11, Was #17
Hahn gets in, bumping Rojas, but he's not very far up and could get bumped before this session is over.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.374/218.97, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.439/217.54, Was #16
Right Lane: Mike Stawicki Runs 7.055/217.02, Now #25
Best prior run: 6.664/214.28, Was #25
Hoover inherited the bump spot from Rojas and did a nice job of getting a long way from the bottom on this pass. Stawicki spun the tires hard on the launch and got completely out of the throttle to regain traction. Now it's Matt Tolbert on the bubble, in "Big Bird" at 6.421.
Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.353/218.34, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.404/217.49, Was #14
Right Lane: Sal Passarelli Runs 6.707/212.96, Now #27
Best prior run: 6.895/212.66, Was #30
Nice move by Cossis, all the way to the top half of the field.
Left Lane: Mike Lockwood Runs 6.827/160.74, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.461/217.49, Was #18
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 12.897/66.17, Now #31
                                  No Prior Run
Castellana's car turned hard left on the launch and he shut it down. Lockwood was not on a qualifying pace and pulled the chutes early, when he got out from behind the stands and the cross-wind hit him.
Left Lane: Todd Howard Runs 21.819/32.74, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.364/218.34, Was #9
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 11.814/74.16, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.392/217.28, Was #13
Both cars shook hard. Jenkins recovered and motored through, but Howard's engine went dead and he coasted through.
Left Lane: Chris Cline Runs 14.586/84.46, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.580/199.20, Was #21
Right Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 10.156/86.39, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.596/211.76, Was #22
Tolbert's 6.421 was still the mark to beat. Both cars shook, Kammes trying to drive through it and possibly tagging the wall as a result.
Left Lane: Ed Wasserbeck Runs 6.837/206.94, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.640/209.49, Was #24
Right Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.348/213.42, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.365/201.70, Was #11
Wasserbeck's car was all over the place. Moyer did a nice job, straight and smooth, moving to the top half of the field.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.392/216.08, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.563/191.69, Was #19
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.463/188.28, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.395/218.23, Was #14
Martin was all over the lane and never lifted, getting in and bumping Tolbert. Hood's run was also far from straight for no improvement. Now the bump is Fred Hahn's 6.418.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 15.926/69.21, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.326/221.56, Was #4
Right Lane: David Roemer Runs 13.968/57.78, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.630/212.96, Was #23
Two more with severe shake.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.380/209.54, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.346/221.51, Was #6
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 15.310/62.49, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.340/221.23, Was #5
Nice run by Stott, tire shake for Vick.
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.309/217.70, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.361/222.16, Was #9
Right Lane: William Rojas Runs 6.427/209.98, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.451/201.11, Was #18
janis did a great job of driving, the car left of the groove, next to the wall, all the way down the track. Rojas stepped up, but not far enough.
Left Lane: Matt Tolbert Runs 6.487/215.56, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.421/216.50, Was #17
Right Lane: Tony Pontieri No Time, Now #28
Best prior run: 6.711/210.82, Was #28
Pontieri's car never pulled into the water. Tolbert was all over the lane, not lifting, but came up short and will be first alternate.
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.376/221.62, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Last car, King making a last-ditch effort and coming up with a winner, bumping Hahn with a string-straight pass, right down the groove.

That's it, Professional qualifying is finished.

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Mopar Pro Modified at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Carl Moyer (Karl Chevrolet '57 Chevy Bel Air0.478 6.341 220.04
 (L) Steve Cossis (Psychosis '53 Chevy Corvette) 0.506 11.691 71.52
12:38 PM Cossis launched into shake and shut it off. Moyer went right down the groove on a nice pass.
 (W) Todd Howard ('57 Chevy Bel Air) 0.456 20.836 51.15
 (L) Mitch Stott (Radiac Abrasives '63 Chevy Corv0.303(R) 6.312 223.15
Stott left early and wasted a nice run, Howard shaking very hard and coasting through with the win light on all the way down the track.
 (W) Paul Athey (Mohegan Sun '51 Mercury) 0.614 7.989 106.39
 (L) Steve Vick (Kyles Trucking '68 Chevy Camaro)0.000(R) (Broke)
Vick was shut down after the burnout, leaking oil from the waterbox to about 200 feet out on the burnout (a "black flag" offense), giving Athey a test pass. Athey went for lane choice, shallow-staging, but the car went left and then right, so he shut it down.
 (W) Al Billes (Quaker State '53 Studebaker) 0.442 6.263 224.32
 (L) Ed Hoover (Trussel Constr. '63 Chevy Corvett0.458 9.094 100.01
Billes won this one with style, leaving first and running low ET top speed of the weekend despite a bit of shake on the launch. Hoover also shook on the launch, heading for the centerline, forcing him to lift. Then the fog moved back in, the 1,000-foot marker no longer visible from the tower.

12:48 PM We're on hold for fog and moisture on the racing surface.
 (W) Mike Janis (Jan Cen Engines '63 Chevy Corvet0.398 6.196 227.44
 (L) Chip King ('01 Dodge Avenger) 0.442 (Broke)
4:56 PM We resume the second round, the fog now well away from the track - though the horizon is still only about a mile away through the mist.

Janis lit the red bulb and then King's Avenger turned hard right and crossed the centerline before the 330-foot marker. Janis makes the quickest and fastest pass of the year for the win! He will have lane choice against Billes in round two.
 (W) Troy Critchley (Majesty Group '41 Willys) 0.612 7.157 150.90
 (L) Shannon Jenkins ('68 Chevy Camaro) 0.292(R) 14.195 59.88
Jenkins shook hard after a red light. Critchley was all over the lane, cut stayed in bounds and legal. He is quick enough to earn lane choice against Athey in round two.
 (W) Quain Stott (Lee Boy '63 Chevy Corvette) 0.541 7.299 212.96
 (L) Harold Martin (AC Delco '00 Pontiac Firebird0.547 (Broke)
Martin's car flamed out on the launch. Stott was loose and pedaled a couple times for the win, quick enough for lane choice against Howard in round two.
 (W) Alan Pittman (Westbrook M'Sports '41 Willys)0.530 6.332 221.18
 (L) Ronnie Hood (Fulwylie M'Sports '63 Chevy Cor0.467 6.511 219.67
Final pair. Hood was away first, but his car was a bit loose in the first 300 feet and Pitt, man drove by on a straight, smooth pass for the win and lane choice against Moyer in round two.

Sunday

Results for Elimination Round 2

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Mopar Pro Modified at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Quain Stott (Lee Boy '63 Chevy Corvette) 0.557 6.607 220.75
 (L) Todd Howard ('57 Chevy Bel Air) 0.482 21.551 33.68
6:47 PM Two nitrous cars open the second round and both chattered the tires on the launch. Stott pedaled and continued, but Howard's car turned hard right and then the engine went silent.
 (W) Troy Critchley (Majesty Group '41 Willys) 0.606 6.292 220.15
 (L) Paul Athey (Mohegan Sun '51 Mercury) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Athey's engine wouldn't fire and Critchley got a single to the semifinals. He launched, shook, fishtailed, got it up on two wheels, and drove out of it with his best ET of the weekend and lane choice against Quain Stott in the semifinals.
 (W) Alan Pittman (Westbrook M'Sports '41 Willys)0.523 6.295 221.13
 (L) Carl Moyer (Karl Chevrolet '57 Chevy Bel Air0.489 6.372 219.03
Moyer got a great light and a good run, but Pittman came up with the performance to go by on the top end to win by a margin of victory = 0.043 seconds (approximately 14 feet).
 (W) Mike Janis (Jan Cen Engines '63 Chevy Corvet0.520 6.207 226.24
 (L) Al Billes (Quaker State '53 Studebaker) 0.494 6.641 179.31
The Canadian left first, but shook and had to pedal it while Janis was going right down the groove with the second-quickest pass of the weekend. Janis has lane choice against Pittman in the semifinals.

Sunday

Results for Elimination Round 3

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Mopar Pro Modified at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Quain Stott (Lee Boy '63 Chevy Corvette) 0.440 6.313 221.51
 (L) Troy Critchley (Majesty Group '41 Willys) 0.495 6.309 221.18
8:31 PM This is the last of the Pro semifinals, all the other eliminators already set for their finals (or already finished). Stott wins this one at the tree, on a holeshot, so we'll have a nitrous versus blower final round once again. Margin of victory = 0.051 seconds (approximately 17 feet).
 (W) Alan Pittman (Westbrook M'Sports '41 Willys)0.432 6.299 222.00
 (L) Mike Janis (Jan Cen Engines '63 Chevy Corvet0.462 7.631 127.73
Pittman left first and then it looked like Janis hurt the clutch at half track, lots of bright sparks from under the car. Pittman advances and will have lane choice in the finals against Quain Stott, by just over a hundredth of a second.

Sunday

Results for Final Round

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Mopar Pro Modified at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Alan Pittman (Westbrook M'Sports '41 Willys)0.418 6.244 222.11
 (L) Quain Stott (Lee Boy '63 Chevy Corvette) 0.424 6.385 219.78
10:04 PM Stott changed the pistons in his engine between rounds, more than routine maintenance for that team. Based on prior performance this weekend, this one promised to be close. Both drivers sawed the tree down, excellent reaction times, but Pittman's car was clean and straight, Stott's trailing orange exhaust flames (not a good sign). Stott's run was good enough to win if Pittman stumbled, but Pittman not only didn't stumble, he ran his best lap of the event for the victory by about three car lengths.
