Results for Qualifying 1

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Funny Car at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.285/202.56, Now #1
Right Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.301/202.93, Now #2
6:55 PM Munroe had a solid 0.943 60-foot time, but fell off the pace on the top end. McMillen struggled all the way down the track, but stayed with it to the finish line.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.012/230.88, Now #1
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 6.096/230.53, Now #2
Rector went pretty much down the groove, but Brand's car was all over the lane and he kept the throttle wide open.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.927/212.31, Now #1
Cannister's car shook and skated over next to the wall, so she lifted. Thomas made a good run, but his chute took out the finish line reflector (not a foul) and Cannister received no time.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.324/179.49, Now #7
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 6.259/223.65, Now #4
Atchison's car shook extremely hard on the launch, off a 0.947 60-foot time, the rear tires clear of the track several times, and he short-shifted to tame it down. His car almost crossed the centerline, barely missing the half-track reflectors. When he lifted at the finish line his engine let go, flames and black oil smoke clearly visible from the starting line. He got the car stopped and the Professional Track Services crew got there quickly to put the fire out, but we're down for a bit for a cleanup..
Left Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 8.287/111.87, Now #9
Right Lane: Herb Rodgers Runs 6.357/224.32, Now #8
Noakes shook very hard and had to pedal his way through it. Rodgers also shook and pedaled it.

Results for Qualifying 2

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Funny Car at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.108/230.12, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.301/202.93, Was #5
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 7.842/116.77, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.012/230.88, Was #1
2:30 PM Since yesterday afternoon the field was shaken up a bit. Rob Atchison's car was too badly damaged in the fire to continue and apparent polesitter Mark Thomas was disqualified for taking out the finish line timing reflector with his parachute. It's getting to be like a soap opera! Brand slowed early in the run, trailing smoke, but no oil. Nice pass by Munroe.
Left Lane: Herb Rodgers Runs 6.278/226.35, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.357/224.32, Was #7
Right Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.239/222.99, Now #4
Best prior run: 8.287/111.87, Was #8
Two good runs here, clean and straight.
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 6.035/232.25, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.096/230.53, Was #2
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.165/225.79, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.285/202.56, Was #7
Nice runs in both lanes to improve slightly over yesterday's runs.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.869/237.34, Now #1
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 6.198/225.79, Now #6
                                  No Prior Run
With a short field, everyone runs, but only if they get a valid qualifying run on the books. That leaves Laurie Cannister and Thomas on the outside coming into this round.

Thomas was DQ'ed and Cannister got no time because his car stopped the timing system in both lanes yesterday. So Thomas calmly comes up and takes the top spot again, in spades, while Cannister also gets a time and a spot on the ladder - on the same side of the ladder as Thomas, for now anyway.
Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.935/232.35, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.259/223.65, Was #8
Right Lane: Steve Ruda Runs 7.623/143.03, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
Vouros jumped off the starting line with a 0.959 60-foot time, Ruda's car dropped a couple cylinders and was clocked at 1.120 seconds for the same distance, then fell back quickly.
Left Lane: Mike Etter Runs 6.942/175.60, Now #11
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 11.485/68.78, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Neither of these cars went down the track yesterday. Dobbs shook hard and shut it off, coasting through. Etter made a full pass, but was way down on top-end power.
Left Lane: Paul Zgoda Runs 6.139/231.42, Now #6
                                  No Prior Run
Another newbie, making the field size 14 cars for eliminations (with one already broken). Zgoda's run looked lazy, but he really came on strong on the top end.

Results for Qualifying 3

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Funny Car at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Dan Roman Runs 9.391/131.44, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 6.046/230.65, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.035/232.25, Was #4
10:48 PM Roman shakes on his first qualifying attempt of the weekend and coasts through, qualified in this short field. Rector made another clean run, but off the pace we expect from him.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.000/233.16, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.012/230.88, Was #3
Right Lane: Mike Etter Runs 8.357/117.44, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
Etter inadvertently deep-staged, then shook and danced on the launch, with a couple of dead pipes. Brand made a good, clean, straight run, a rarity in the left lane.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.145/231.42, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.165/225.79, Was #7
Right Lane: Jason Juday Runs 8.068/162.51, Now #13
                                  No Prior Run
We're up to sixteen cars with Juday - at least we are if he manages to make a legal run. His car lurched off the line and then bobbed and weaved its way down the strip, almost crossing the centerline. Meanwhile, McMillen made a nice, straight run, also in the left lane.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.934/233.70, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.198/225.79, Was #8
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 14.695/65.17, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.869/237.34, Was #1
Cannister gets her "Girl Power" car right down the left lane on a great run, moving way up on the ladder. Thomas shook very hard on the launch and shut it down immediately.
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 8.772/97.56, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.935/232.35, Was #3
Vouros shook the tires and turned right, pedaled, shook, and gave it up.

Results for Elimination Round 1

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Funny Car at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '01 Pontiac Fire0.512 5.888 234.49
 (L) Doug Weaver ('98 Dodge Avenger) 0.707 9.201 96.75
12:13 PM Weaver's Avenger struggled off the starting line with a couple dead cylinders, moving over near the wall and never really coming up to full power. Meanwhile Brand was on his best pass of the weekend, by over a tenth of a second.
 (W) Jimmy Rector ('01 Chevy Camaro) 0.518 5.996 232.31
 (L) Steve Ruda (Ruda Automotive '99 Dodge Avenge0.540 6.475 184.38
Ruda was all over the lane on the burnout, not a good sign, especially against a tough opponent like Rector. Rector beat Ruda off the line and then ran away from him, Ruda's car struggling a bit. It looked like Ruda's engine gave up around the 1,000-foot marker. Rector faces Brand next round, Brand with lane choice.
 (W) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs '01 Dodge Aven0.646 5.889 235.78
 (L) Larry Dobbs ('01 Chevy Corvette) 0.594 14.760 44.86
Dobbs shook hard and Thomas is running like a bracket racer this weekend. End of story.
 (W) Laurie Cannister (Wolf Racing '99 Chevy Cama0.622 5.899 234.00
 (L) Dan Roman (Absolute Pleasure '98 Pontiac Fir0.489 6.490 204.87
This is only Cannister's fourth round of eliminations in Funny Car, with a DNQ at "the Rock" and a semifinals appearance in Virginia. She was dead late here, but then drove by a struggling Roman like he was standing still.
 (W) Terry McMillen (Mitel '98 Dodge Avenger) 0.385 6.095 229.94
 (L) Paul Noakes ('98 Ford Mustang) 0.365(R) 14.544 54.27
Noakes handed this one to McMillen, but McMillen hurt it at the finish line, "crop dusting" the shutdown area. But the track is dry, no oil on the track or the race car, just a lot of dead aliminum (or is it "aluminium" up here?). McMillen faces Thomas next round, Thomas with lane choice.
 (W) Paul Zgoda ('95 Oldsmobile Achieva) 0.472 6.097 232.31
 (L) Herb Rodgers ('97 Ford Mustang) 0.516 6.182 224.49
"Mr. Rodgers" is a fixture in this category in the Northeast, as is Zgoda, so these two have faced each other several times. This time the win light went to Zgoda, with some early shake in both lanes. To add to the indignity of losing, Rodgers' car went wide on the turnoff and went into the sand trap at the end of the track. Zgoda races Cannister next round, Cannister with lane choice.
 (W) Terry Munroe ('97 Pontiac Firebird) 0.518 9.596 82.04
 (L) Rob Atchison ('98 Pontiac Firebird) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Atchison was unable to run today, destroying his car in a top-end fire during the first qualifying session, Friday, so Munroe used this single to test his setup for the left lane. It needs work, the rear tires chattering hard on the launch.
 (W) John Vouros ('00 Pontiac Firebird) 0.625 5.902 231.24
 (L) Mike Etter ('00 Pontiac Firebird) 0.645 6.173 203.16
Last pair. Vouros led easily despite a tardy launch, Etter even slower to react. Etter's car went steadily to the right, barely clearing the finish line timing reflector. Vouros has lane choice against Munroe next round.

Sunday

Results for Elimination Round 2

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Funny Car at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '01 Pontiac Fire0.465 5.948 233.46
 (L) Jimmy Rector ('01 Chevy Camaro) 0.480 5.976 234.61
6:02 PM Brand won at both ends of the track after working hard to repair first-round dama\ge, but the middle part of this race was anything but easy, his car all over the lane, left and right of the groove. Margin of victory = 0.043 seconds (approximately 15 feet).
 (W) Laurie Cannister (Wolf Racing '99 Chevy Cama0.634 5.883 234.07
 (L) Paul Zgoda ('95 Oldsmobile Achieva) 0.500 6.169 230.71
Zgoda nailed Cannister to the tree, but got out of the groove, over near the wall, and had to lift. Once she got started, Cannister stormed down the lane with her quickest run of the event, but she's going to need a better reaction time in the semifinals.
 (W) John Vouros ('00 Pontiac Firebird) 0.521 5.960 232.13
 (L) Terry Munroe ('97 Pontiac Firebird) 0.498 6.052 232.97
Munroe left first, but we won't have an all-Beaver County, PA semifinal because Vouros drove by to win by a margin of victory = 0.069 seconds (approximately 24 feet), losing lane choice to Cannister (also a Beaver County resident).
 (W) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs '01 Dodge Aven1.747 14.834 79.83
 (L) Terry McMillen (Mitel '98 Dodge Avenger) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Thomas got a single when McMillen was unable to return. he took it easy to save parts, ceding lane choice to Brand in the semifinals.

Results for Elimination Round 3

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in Funny Car at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '01 Pontiac Fire0.487 5.859 235.10
 (L) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs '01 Dodge Aven0.505 6.097 234.61
7:41 PM Brand pulls off the upset here, lane choice possibly a factor because Thomas shook the tires hard on the launch and had to pedal it to regain traction. By then Brand was long gone.
 (W) John Vouros ('00 Pontiac Firebird) 0.486 5.884 235.97
 (L) Laurie Cannister (Wolf Racing '99 Chevy Cama0.485 5.916 237.40
Neither driver had reaction times to write home about in the first two rounds, but both did a good job here and then it was a good, old-fashioned drag race, the margin of victory = 0.031 seconds (approximately 11 feet). Vouros advances, but loses lane choice in the final round to Brand. Should be a good one!

Sunday

Results for Final Round

GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations in Funny Car at the Second annual Mopar Performance Parts Nationals presented by Castrol:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '01 Pontiac Fire0.441 5.880 234.61
 (L) John Vouros ('00 Pontiac Firebird) 0.558 5.853 236.96
9:16 PM This was wild! Brand took a huge lead at the green and then was all over the lane, refusing to lift, winning by a margin of victory = 0.090 seconds (approximately 31 feet).
