Results for Qualifying 1

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the Third annual CARQUEST Autumn Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.391/216.24, Now #1
Right Lane: Steve Cossis No Time, Now #2
1:33 PM Cossis' car rolled back out of the staging beam when he brought the RPMs up. Good opening pass for Pittman.
Left Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.342/220.40, Now #2
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.242/220.26, Now #1
Hahn's car didn't get off the starting line cleanly and still set a tough challenge for the rest of the field. Good run by Hood, but Hahn left him far behind.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.494/200.62, Now #5
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.354/219.15, Now #3
Athey had top lift to keep the '51 Mercury on his side of the centerline. Nice pass by Vick, no wiggles, no waggles.
Left Lane: Kjell-Hakan Mostron	Runs 7.045/163.59, Now #7
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.326/220.84, Now #2
Mostron chattered the tires and got very sideways. Very nice opening pass by Hoover, clean and straight.
Left Lane: Todd Howard Runs 6.487/215.68, Now #6
Right Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.555/215.96, Now #8
Both cars ran well to half track, then had problems.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.409/222.25, Now #6
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 10.305/77.77, Now #11
Castellana chattered the tires and slowed.
Left Lane: Chris Cline Runs 10.209/105.23, Now #12
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.293/223.06, Now #2
In this pair it was Cline with starting line problems while Janis came out of the box with a competitive tuneup, looking to clinch the championship here at Rockingham.
Left Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.440/216.72, Now #8
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 7.447/131.97, Now #13
King's car spit out the blower belt at half track. No visible problems for McaMis, but he needs to pick up a tenth of a second to be competitive.
Left Lane: Scott Ray Runs 8.631/97.71, Now #15
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.325/219.61, Now #3
Ray's Corvette sports a hood scoop this weekend in an attempt to solve the fuel system problems that have plagued him. No joy here, the car off the pace from the start. Nice pass for "the Ice Man."
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.377/219.83, Now #7
Right Lane: Jerry Williams Runs 6.536/207.69, Now #13
Two clean runs, Stott getting a good baseline run on the books here.
Left Lane: Todd Tutterow Runs 12.017/77.33, Now #21
Right Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 6.365/220.30, Now #7
Tutterow's car turned hard left on the launch and he had to lift. Nice opening pass by mauney, straight and smooth.
Left Lane: Danny Perry No Time, Now #24
Right Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.427/214.42, Now #11
Perry's new '63 split-window Corvette got out of the groove, then fishtailed and the rear end swung out to the left, clipping the wall, the rear wing peeling the trackside signs off the wall. The car rolled over once and it appeared that the throttle hung open because when the rear of the car came down the car went into a violent series of side-over-side barrel rolls at half track. The car shed the hood and several body panels before coming to a stop, upside down, in the middle of the track. After an anxious few minutes, we heard the call from the safety crew, "He's out of the car and being checked out." He appears to be okay, but his new race car is a mess.
Left Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 10.996/79.15, Now #22
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 12.493/83.33, Now #24
Stott shook and shut off. Auxier had a nitrous explosion.
Left Lane: Ken Regenthal Runs 10.100/89.42, Now #20
Right Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 11.422/77.85, Now #24
Lots of tire chatter here, Patterson getting very sideways.
Right Lane: Not on File No Time, Now #29
Don't know who this is, but it's a radical '34 Chevy with a blower. Same story as many others, lots of tire chatter and shake. He also left before the tree was activated, so it was a totally wasted run.

Results for Qualifying 2

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the Third annual CARQUEST Autumn Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Thomas Patterson Runs 20.384/39.43, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ken Regenthal Runs 6.413/216.69, Now #11
Best prior run: 10.100/89.42, Was #18
9:41 PM Patterson's right rear tire bit, the left rear didn't. The car turned hard left and he shut it off. Regenthal made a nice, soft pass to get into the field - for now, anyway.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.282/221.38, Now #2
Best prior run: 12.493/83.33, Was #20
Right Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 19.312/40.83, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
This time it was the right lane car that had one-wheel traction, Auxier's car turning hard right on the launch. No problems for Stott, hard and quick all the way down the track.
Left Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.379/218.09, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.427/214.42, Was #13
Right Lane: Todd Tutterow Runs 6.331/217.32, Now #6
Best prior run: 12.017/77.33, Was #20
Two good runs, O'Dell losing a bit of elapsed time with tire spin on the launch.
Left Lane: Jerry Williams Runs 6.493/200.68, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.536/207.69, Was #18
Right Lane: Chris Cline Runs 10.863/79.79, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
Williams' car was clean and straight, just underpowered. Cline's car was very sluggish on the launch and he just drove it through.
Left Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.342/209.01, Now #8
                                  No Prior Run
     Right Lane: Kjell-Hakan Mostron
                                  Runs 8.220/133.09, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.045/163.59, Was #19
Moyer left hard and was on a very good run to 1,000 feet, then he slowed. Mostron was flirting with the wall for much of the run, forced to lift.
Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 7.240/148.76, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Todd Howard Runs 6.431/215.44, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.487/215.68, Was #17
Cossis got down the track, at least the first half of it. Howard squeaked into the field, on the bump spot.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 15.888/50.48, Now #24
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.312/212.16, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.377/219.83, Was #11
Castellana slowed immediately, couldn't see why. Stott made a very nice run to move out of the bottom half of the field.
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.243/223.02, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.293/223.06, Was #3
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.372/212.83, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.409/222.25, Was #14
Janis made a very nice run, right down the groove. Martin's run also looked pretty good, but the trackside spotters took a close look at his lane and called for the cleanup crew, a black flag penalty called for oil on the track.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.260/221.49, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.242/220.26, Was #1
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.396/211.86, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.494/200.62, Was #19
Two pretty good runs from a pair of cars that have been chasing handling problems all season.
Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.445/216.65, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.325/219.61, Was #5
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.371/218.12, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.391/216.24, Was #14
Jenkins lost a tenth of a second right at the start, spinning the tires hard.. Nice run for Pittman, though a bit to the right of the groove.
Left Lane: Steve Vick Runs 7.956/120.97, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.354/219.15, Was #10
Right Lane: Scott Ray Runs 14.357/72.56, Now #24
                                  No Prior Run
Ray shut it down almost immediately. Vick went out about 300 feet, then slowed.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.297/218.02, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.326/220.84, Was #6
Right Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.351/217.39, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.440/216.72, Was #18
Two clean, straight runs to move Hoover toward the top of the field and McAmis solidly into the field.
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.322/220.01, Now #6
Best prior run: 7.447/131.97, Was #22
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.332/220.01, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.342/220.40, Was #8
King was shooting at Athey's 6.396 and pulled it off nicely, He and Hood welded together all the way down the track.
Left Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 9.488/101.28, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.365/220.30, Was #13
Mauney's car went out about 200 feet and tried to turn left, toward the wall, so he shut it off.
Left Lane: Brandon S Pesz Runs 6.552/215.89, Now #21
                                  No Prior Run
Pesz's car drifted steadily left and he had to yank it back to the groove. He also went off the top end of the track. All in all, not a good day.
Right Lane: Gary Ellis Runs 7.559/175.05, Now #24
                                  No Prior Run
Ellis made his burnout, backed up, then shut the engine off to wait for the safety crew to tow Pesz out of the way. Ellis' car is painted silver and red, in a Confederate flag motif, and the car is called "Southern Thunder." He's working on his license, so probably won't show on the qualifying sheets.

Results for Qualifying 3

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 3 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the Third annual CARQUEST Autumn Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Brandon Pesz No Time, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.552/215.89, Was #21
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.383/219.51, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.332/220.01, Was #9
2:14 PM Pesz made the burnout and the starting line crew signaled him to shut it off, the car leaving a trail of "stuff" on the first 330 feet of the track. Then Hood made a nice, easy run, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 7.055/146.04, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.365/220.30, Was #13
Right Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 10.641/99.48, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.351/217.39, Was #11
McAmis shook hard and shut it down immediately. Mauney's run was off pace to half track and he had the chutes out well before the finish line.
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 9.759/90.58, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.322/220.01, Was #6
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.380/218.97, Now #17

Ray's car was once again very slow on the launch, posting a 1.283 60-foot time. O'Dell gave it a shot, but came up a few thousandths short.
Left Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.323/218.80, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.351/217.39, Was #11

Left Lane: Todd Tutterow No Time, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.331/217.32, Was #9

                                  No Prior Run
Just-bumped Martin fails to improve, leaving him in the first alternate slot. Patterson launched and it appeared he broke an axle or the rear end, the car making a violent left turn. Patterson fought it, the car whipping violently each time he came close to getting it under control. He managed to get it stopped without hitting anything, though he had several close calls.

Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.248/216.79, Now #3

Best prior run: 6.297/218.02, Was #8
10:03 PM Hoover chose to make the rerun since he was on a good run when something stopped the finish line clocks. The rerun was worth it, a pretty run, right down the groove. Meanwhile, we have word that Fred Hahn's run won't count because the car came up light at the scales.

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Fred Hahn (Summit Racing '01 Chevy Corvette) 0.464 6.567 169.93
 (L) Mike Janis (Jan Cen Engines '63 Chevy Corvet 0.423 6.635 185.23
9:12 PM Last year's champion and the points leader for this year's title square off in the final round. Janis is close to clinching the title, leading Alan Pittman by almost 300 points at this point. The race was a white-knuckler in both lanes, both cars all over the lane and neither driver wanting to lift. From this end of the track it looked like either or both were going to hit the wall. Both drivers put the chutes out early, the win light on in Hahn's lane. Margin of victory = 0.027 seconds (approximately 7 feet). Track safety workers checked both lanes and reported that Janis crossed the track boundary line, about three feet from the wall, but Hahn did not. Then they went to work on the track, trying to regain the traction that the rain apparently washed away.
