DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Top Fuel at the
Inaugural AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Right Lane: Shirley Muldowney Runs 10.998/83.28, Now #1
8:11 PM This was Shirley's first-ever pass at Virginia Motorsports Park.
She left hard and then lost traction about 100 feet out.
Left Lane: Tracy Howard Runs 5.777/221.60, Now #1
Right Lane: Roger Dean Runs 9.316/77.90, Now #2
Howard's car was too weak to overpower the track, the header flames dim and
flickering. Dean's header flames were much brighter - until they disappeared in
clouds of tire smoke.
Left Lane: Jim Bailey Runs 5.111/211.53, Now #2
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 4.782/301.60, Now #1
Both were on good passes, side by side, until Bailey's header flames went out
at about the 1,000-foot marker. Head drove it through the lights on a nice opening
pass.
Left Lane: Louie Allison Runs 5.370/180.94, Now #3
Right Lane: Clay Millican Runs 6.344/121.67, Now #5
Millican pedaled it twice, the header flames going down and back up two times
before they went out. Allison didn't appear to have any problems early in the run,
but shut it off way before the finish line.
Left Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.856/297.48, Now #3
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.729/308.78, Now #1
They saved the best for last, two nice runs, side by side, Litton the quicker
of the two this time around. from the top end comes the call, "oil on the track,"
and it's starting to rain on the top end, but it doesn't matter because that was
the last pair of the day. The "black flag" falls on Paul Romine once again, making
it 60 points he's lost so far this season (45 in penalties and 15 in lost bonus
points).

3:10 PM It's beginning to cloud over as we start the third round of Top Fuel
Qualifying. Muldowney needs a good run to get in the field. There's a slight delay
as the PTS crew grooms both lanes for this round of qualifying. On the start,
Shirley moves just a few feet and goes up in smoke. She'll need to make the best of
the Night Of Fire session just to get in. Howard makes a full pass but sounds like
it's not firing on all cylinders.

Dean shuts it off just past 60' while Allison makes a solid run.

Millican goes to number one with a great run. Bailey went up in smoke around

CARQUEST is filming a commercial on the line, concentrating on Romine as these
two fire up. Head improves on his time but stays third. Romine eats up a head
gasket, giving the film crew some header flames at the top end.

Litton is only .006 away from the number one spot. He will not improve
here.

9:32 PM Ready for the final round of Top Fuel qualifying. Howard's car won't
back up so the big push is underway. He makes it back in time. Muldowney deep
stages, then makes a great run. But it was too good for the motor as it let go past
the lights and the back half of the car was set ablaze. Shirley steps out, she's OK
but the damage to the rear of the car is enough to need a flatbed. No oil showing
on the quarter mile; there will be a big cleanup in the shutdown area. Will the
damage be great enough to prevent her from running eliminations? You know they'll
be burning some serious midnight oil tonight if they think they can fix it before
the start of eliminations tomorrow, scheduled for sometime after 12:30pm.

9:49 PM Back from the cleanup and the black flag rule costs Shirley Muldowney
20 points...but she's in! Bailey moves to number 4 on a great run while Head
torched the tires just out of the gate.

9:56 PM Millican just got bumped out of the top spot by Romine. Can he claim
it back? He could play it safe and just get the car tuned up for eliminations. He
bent the frame on last night's pass and lots of work got him back to try for number
one again. And he does it by a bunch! Straight, smooth pass with the first 4.60 of
the weekend! Great run!

1:21 PM We're ready for round 1 Top Fuel. This pairing is a repeat of last
night's final qualifying session. This one looked a lot closer than the numbers
would suggest. Head went nice and straight and he will go on to round 2.

Allison used to wrench for Jack Ostrander, now "Cardiac Jack" is returning the
favor for Allison. Louie nails Litton to the tree but is not able to hold off
Bruce's performance advantage. Litton is set for round 2 vs.

Dean makes the field from his first alternate spot since Shirley Muldowney's
fire on her last qualifying run damaged her car beyond repair. Dean is unable to
take advantage as his car suffered too much parts damage during qualifying and was
just hoping for a Romine miscue. No dice here as Romine takes it easy on the
CARQUEST parts on the run and Paul will get lane choice over Litton in round 2.

Millican gets an easy win here as Howard is no match either on the starting
line or ET. Millican gets lane choice vs. Head in the next round.

4:00 PM We are ready for round 2 of Top Fuel. We begin with a classic
battle. Not so fast: Litton goes up in smoke and Romine makes it look easy but he
may have used up some parts on the run.

(L) Clay Millican (Werner Dragster) 0.466 6.652 206.13
Who will get Romine in the finals? The performance advantage belongs to
Millican. But off the line, Clay smokes the tires. He is just about to give it up
when Head also goes up in smoke just before half track. Now it's pedal cars and
Head's run to half track gave him all the advantage he needed to win. On the run,
Head also put down fluids and loses 20 points due to the black flag rule. Romine
will get lane choice over Head in the final.

6:13 PM We have fired engines for the Top Fuel "Dogfight". Romine is also
looking to make it 2 for 2 in 2001. These two competitors are about equal in
performance for the weekend. Both strike the tires just off the line; Head
pedalled the car while Romine was able to get traction back and recovered for the
win. So Romine is also undefeated in 2001. Great job!
