Results for Qualifying 1

DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Inaugural AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Mark Conner Runs 6.835/169.51, Now #2
Right Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.623/196.30, Now #1
6:42 PM Conner appeared to be on the better run of the two, but slowed well before the finish line. Not much wrong with Mancuso's run, though there was a flash of flame in the lights - whether from him shutting it down or something letting go not clear from here.
Left Lane: Jack Romine Runs 8.272/191.57, Now #4
Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.684/199.02, Now #2
Romine struggled early, finally got it going. Good pass for Turner, smooth and clean.
Left Lane: Ray Price No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Bill Furr Runs 6.704/205.01, Now #3
Price's engine sounded sour on the burnout and he shut it down at the line. Furr made a very nice run with a big speed.
Left Lane: Stan Verheijen Runs 7.554/181.72, Now #6
Right Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.566/187.36, Now #1
Verheijen struggled early in the run, while Romine streaked right down the groove, his speed surprisingly slow for such a quick pass.
Left Lane: Mark Cox Runs 6.991/199.49, Now #7
Right Lane: Bill Malloy Runs 6.570/194.97, Now #2
Two more good runs, seven of the eight bikes in the sixes already.
Left Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 15.010/51.10, Now #11
Right Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.971/206.61, Now #7
Emery chattered the rear tires and shut it down, coasting through. Nice pass by Stordeur, his ET hurt when he spun the tire hard on the launch.
Left Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 7.042/205.69, Now #9
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 7.082/220.19, Now #10
Mattioli is on Jim McClure's bike while McClure recovers from his injuries. Mattioli said this bike has 200 more horsepower than his usual ride. Both bikes spun the rear tire on the launch, then hooked up for big speeds, Vancil running 4 mph faster than the current speed record, neither qualifying in this very quick field.

Results for Qualifying 2

DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Inaugural AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Mike Romine Runs 7.005/157.17, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.566/187.36, Was #1
Right Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 9.558/90.97, Now #13
Best prior run: 15.010/51.10, Was #13
1:30 PM Both riders had problems, Romine around half track and Emery from the git-go. For the record, the bump time as we open this second round is 6.991, already a six-second field after just one qualifying session - Mark Cox on the bubble.
Left Lane: Bill Furr Runs 6.751/194.04, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.704/205.01, Was #5
Right Lane: Mark Cox Runs 7.132/170.95, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.991/199.49, Was #8
Cox was leaning way off the left side of the bike for the first half of the run and that had to hurt his ET, leaving him still on the bubble. No help for Furr either, but he's pretty safe with a 6.75.
Left Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.654/203.61, Now #4
Best prior run: 7.082/220.19, Was #10
Right Lane: Stan Verheijen Runs 6.955/188.73, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.554/181.72, Was #11
Vancil came up short of the speed needed to back up his 220 mph blast last night, but more important to him was his ET, a solid run to get into the field. Verheijen also got in, bumping Cox and Steve Stordeur, Verheijen now on the bubble.
Left Lane: Jay Turner Runs 17.101/53.44, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.684/199.02, Was #5
Right Lane: Ray Price Runs 19.623/32.49, Now #14
                                  No Prior Run
Price failed to record a time last night and his second effort wasn't much better, both bikes spinning their tires and then going silent on the launch.
Left Lane: Bill Malloy Runs 6.599/202.67, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.570/194.97, Was #2
Right Lane: Mark Conner Runs 7.099/195.08, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.835/169.51, Was #7
Conner smoked the tire and had to back off the throttle briefly, but Malloy showed that his run last night was no fluke, making a strong, clean pass at over 200 mph.
Left Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.790/185.77, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.623/196.30, Was #3
Right Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 6.799/192.55, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.042/205.69, Was #11
Mattioli gets in with a clean, straight run, bumping Verheijen and putting Conner on the bump spot at 6.835.
Right Lane: Jack Romine Runs 6.983/194.13, Now #11
Best prior run: 8.272/191.57, Was #12
Last run of the round, Romine uncharacteristically out of the field after the first session and even more uncharacteristically out of the field after two, the engine sounding soft on the launch.

Results for Qualifying 3

DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Inaugural AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Jack Romine Runs 7.153/194.49, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.983/194.13, Was #11
Right Lane: Bill Furr Runs 13.468/54.33, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.704/205.01, Was #6
7:57 PM It's simple - the bump time is Mark Conner's 6.835. Furr is in, Romine isn't. Romine's engine wasn't up to the task and he stays on the outside. Furr was ahead, on a pretty good pass, and then there was a flash of flame from the engine at half track and he coasted through. He's okay, but that had to be an experience, laying on top of the engine when it backfires.
Left Lane: Stan Verheijen Runs 7.726/129.06, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.955/188.73, Was #9
Right Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.524/198.96, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.566/187.36, Was #1
Verheijen wasn't able to stay with Romine right from the start, then slowed at half track. Nice pass by Romine, smooth and straight.
Left Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 9.331/94.45, Now #13
Best prior run: 9.558/90.97, Was #13
Right Lane: Bob Malloy Runs 6.674/188.15, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.570/194.97, Was #2
Emery slowed immediately. Nice run by Malloy - he's for real!
Left Lane: Mark Cox Runs 6.786/205.85, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.991/199.49, Was #12
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.580/198.00, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.654/203.61, Was #4
Two nice runs, both bikes pulling all the way down the track. Cox bumps Conner, putting Mattioli on the bump at 6.799.
Left Lane: Mark Conner Runs 6.822/206.89, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.835/169.51, Was #9
Right Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.734/196.56, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.971/206.61, Was #11
Stordeur was in after the first round, missed the second and was bumped out, then got back in here, bumping Mattioli. Now the bump is Cox's 6.786. Conner made a good run, but not good enough.
Left Lane: Ray Price Runs 7.110/196.73, Now #13
Best prior run: 19.623/32.49, Was #14
Right Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.674/190.00, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.623/196.30, Was #4
No real help here...
Left Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 6.659/201.31, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.799/192.55, Was #9
Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 15.807/45.87, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.684/199.02, Was #5
This is the second-quickest Nitro Harley field ever, the 6.786 bump quicker than the 6.803 bump at Rockingham last Fall. And it gets even quicker, Mattioli with a career-best on Jim McClure's bike to bump Cox. The final "bump" is now Stordeur's 6.734, second only to the 6.673 bump at Rockingham a few weeks ago.

Results for Elimination Round 1

DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the Inaugural AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Steve Stordeur (Mancuso Racing '99 Harley) 0.454 6.555 207.98
 (L) Mike Romine (Chromatic Inc '01 Harley) 0.489 8.887 91.16
12:34 PM The #1 qualifier was out'a here early, his front wheel banging down hard at the 330-foot mark. Even if he'd been able to duplicate his qualifying run he would have had his hands full, Stordeur sawing down the tree and making a flawless pass.
 (W) Tony Mattioli (Mountain Cycle 'OO Harley) 0.490 11.221 114.79
 (L) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso Racing '01 Harley) 0.487 (Broke)
Both bikes broke here, Mancuso on the launch and Mattioli before the 330-foot marker. Mattioli is on his own Harley, by the way, after losing an engine on Jim McClure's bike in the first qualifying session. He will face Stordeur in round two, Stordeur with lane choice.
 (W) Bob Malloy ('00 Harley) 0.456 6.612 208.07
 (L) Bill Furr (Belt Drives Ltd '99 Harley) 0.473 6.775 200.53
Malloy is new to the Nitro Harley ranks, but has a long list of accomplishments in Top Fuel and Funny Bike competition. He qualified well and continues his string of strong runs with a win against a tough competitor, leaving first and never looking back.
 (W) Doug Vancil (Vance & Hines '00 Harley) 0.476 6.522 212.03
 (L) Jay Turner (Waugh Enterprises '00 Harley) 0.490 6.911 151.97
Another great run, Vancil with the quickest run of the weekend to win easily over a coasting Turner. Vancil will have lane choice against Malloy next round.
