Results for Qualifying 1
DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in ihra.com Funny
Car at the Inaugural AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet listing lane, driver
name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.928/237.88, Now #1
Right Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 6.332/224.96, Now #2
12:46 PM Newberry had an off-weekend at Rockingham, so he was definitely
looking for a good run here - and he got it, with very little shake and a straight,
smooth run. Hooper's car shook a bit more and "Newb" left him behind early in the
run.
Left Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.527/222.69, Now #4
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.175/231.79, Now #2
Both these drivers had their hands full, Ray getting extremely sideways on
the launch and Brand out of the groove, over near the wall.
Left Lane: Bruce Mullins Runs 6.108/202.85, Now #2
Right Lane: Dan Roman Runs 6.614/183.67, Now #6
Roman's car shook hard and he lifted, then got back in it. Mullins also
shook but drove through it, trailing smoke for the top half of the run.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.907/238.43, Now #1
Right Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.076/200.11, Now #3
Thomas' car was out of the groove and shaking early in the run - and he still
set the mark to beat. Munroe's run was pretty good, but everyone was watching to
see what Thomas was going to do.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 20.133/31.81, Now #10
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.266/224.92, Now #6
Cannister was barely DNQ at Rockingham, but this time she fell victim to
severe shake. McMillen also shook, but was able to pedal his way through it.
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.899/235.60, Now #1
Right Lane: Gerry Thalacker Runs 7.023/194.21, Now #11
Rector drove a crooked path to the finish line, so the result was a surprise.
Thalacker had problems early and then gathered it up.
Left Lane: Scott Weney Runs 7.553/122.09, Now #13
Right Lane: Chris Hunt Runs 6.158/225.30, Now #6
Weney's car sounded "fat" on the launch and he shut it down around half
track. Hunt made a full pass, no visible problems.
Left Lane: David Rowe Runs 6.419/182.26, Now #11
Right Lane: Bunny Burkett Runs 5.988/234.78, Now #4
Way to go Bunny! That may be her best run ever (we'll check), one that puts
her solidly in the field.
Left Lane: Paul Lee No Time, Now #18
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 5.928/240.94, Now #3
Lee took out the finish line reflector, DQ'ing his run. Tigges was already
past the line when the reflector went flying, so his time was valid.
Left Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.409/176.42, Now #13
Right Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.874/231.84, Now #1
Noakes had problems around half track and slowed on the top end. No problems
in the right lane, however, Vouros on rails.
Left Lane: James Spencer Runs 16.092/47.57, Now #20
Right Lane: Monty Todd Runs 5.836/237.00, Now #1
Spencer shook and the car went silent, coasting through. Todd wasn't
coasting, cleanly down he groove for the #1 spot.
Left Lane: Peter Osterio Runs 7.561/193.90, Now #20
Right Lane: Rob Atchison No Time, Now #24
This was weird - Atchison's car with a sour-sounding engine and then the car
didn't launch, Osterio on a faltering pass, the engine going away in a cloud of
smoke, leaving a trail of oil down the left lane - and then the lights went out,
the power going off the tower. This was the final pair of the round, Pro Mod up
next.

Results for Qualifying 2
DINWIDDIE, Va. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in ihra.com Funny
Car at the Inaugural AC Delco Nationals presented by Chevrolet listing lane, driver
name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best
prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.360/228.04, Now #14
No Prior Run
Right Lane: William Fulford Runs 7.037/163.63, Now #20
No Prior Run
6:57 PM Neither driver ran in the first session. Dobbs bettered Dave Ray's
bump time to get in, for now anyway, but Fulford shook hard and gave it up.
Left Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.632/154.32, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.076/200.11, Was #8
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.840/238.26, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.907/238.43, Was #4
Looks like Fulford lost a blower belt...Nice pass by Thomas, second only to
Todd's pole position run earlier today. Munroe's car struggled and he shut it off
very early.
Left Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 7.102/124.34, Now #22
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 6.303/223.06, Now #13
No Prior Run
Two more "newbies," making their first pass of the event. Gibson's car
shook and the chute deployed around half track, the win spinning it around so the
chute took out a couple of the centerline timing reflectors at the finish line.
Good pass by Midyette to bump David Rowe, putting Paul Noakes on the bubble at
6.409.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.948/234.29, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.175/231.79, Was #11
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.030/231.28, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.527/222.69, Was #18
Two nice runs, bumping Noakes. Now the bump spot belongs to Larry Dobbs at
6.360.
Left Lane: Philip Hooper No Time, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.332/224.96, Was #15
Right Lane: Bruce Mullins No Time, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.108/202.85, Was #11
These two were already in, but needed to move away from the bubble.
Left Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.871/237.42, Now #3
Best prior run: 20.133/31.81, Was #24
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 5.974/212.23, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.928/240.94, Was #5
Great pass by Cannister, a (short) career-best.
Left Lane: Mike Preslar Runs 6.454/166.93, Now #20
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.887/238.51, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.899/235.60, Was #5
Preslar had problems and put the chute out well before the finish line. Very
nice run by rector, eighties becoming fairly common.
Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 5.917/209.00, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.874/231.84, Was #4
Right Lane: David Rowe No Time, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.419/182.26, Was #19
Rowe shut it off on the line. Nice pass by Vouros, just a few hundredths
slower than his first.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.025/232.27, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.266/224.92, Was #14
Right Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.819/240.98, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.928/237.88, Was #7
Newberry lays down a stunning run, clean and smooth, with no shake and no
wiggles. McMillen also stepped up a bunch, but was way behind at the finish
line.
Left Lane: Dan Roman Runs 6.056/228.85, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.614/183.67, Was #21
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 6.064/233.40, Now #13
No Prior Run
Both drivers had to wrestle their cars down the track and did so well enough
to get in - at least for now.
Left Lane: Gerry Thalacker Runs 6.358/231.60, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.023/194.21, Was #23
Right Lane: Scott Weney Runs 5.914/235.97, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.553/122.09, Was #26
Weney made a hard, long, smoky burnout that pleased the crowd. Then he
followed up with a nice, smooth, straight pass to get into the field. The bump is
now down to 6.108, only one car keeping this from being the quickest field
ever.
Left Lane: Chris Hunt Runs 6.060/228.31, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.158/225.30, Was #17
Now we are just 0.003 seconds from the quickest field ever, Hunt with a nice,
clean, straight effort.
Left Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 6.472/231.87, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.332/224.96, Was #19
Hooper launched, got out of the throttle, then back in again. He'll be back
tomorrow.

Right Lane: William Fulford No Time, Now #26
Best prior run: 7.037/163.63, Was #26
1:43 PM Round 3 of Funny Car Qualifying starts with Fulford in the right lane
almost tagging the wall on the burnout. He recovers and prepares to run against
Todd. Bubble is a 6.076 held by Terry Munroe. Todd shuts off early, Fulford tries
to make a full pass but is forced to shut off after an apparent gear shift
problem.
Left Lane: John Vouros Runs 6.114/225.03, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.874/234.70, Was #5
Right Lane: David Rowe Runs 6.696/189.26, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.419/182.26, Was #24
Vouros seemed to have problems with his burnout. Rowe drives out of tire
shake at about half track with no help. Vouros won't be happy with his run
either.
Left Lane: Philip Hooper Runs 6.347/228.38, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.332/224.96, Was #20
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.915/235.10, Now #3

Thomas with a strong run but not his best. Hooper runs his second best time
of the weekend.

Best prior run: 6.056/228.85, Was #13
Right Lane: Ronnie Midyette Runs 6.242/223.06, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.303/223.06, Was #19
Both drivers improve with Roman picking up almost a tenth...
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.167/228.73, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.265/234.33, Was #19
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 8.443/106.56, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.030/231.28, Was #13
One in, one out. Atchison needs to pick up an almost unworldly two tenths.
Ray is 13th, looking to move up. Atchinson gets half of what he needs, still not
good enough. Ray shuts it down early.
Left Lane: Gerry Thalacker Runs 8.052/98.74, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.358/231.60, Was #21
Right Lane: Laurie Cannister Runs 5.868/234.21, Now #4
Best prior run: 5.871/237.42, Was #4
Cannister moves up after taking the Pro Outlaw Championship last year. Thalacker
is in similar dire straits as Atchison the run before, needing a huge jump in
performance to get in the field. Thalacker shuts it down and watches with the rest
of us as Cannister gets her career best performance. Congratulations!
Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 6.076/233.44, Now #8
Best prior run: 5.928/240.94, Was #8
Right Lane: Paul Lee Runs 21.950/31.63, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.064/233.40, Was #15
Tigges loses momentum on the top end, Lee breaks just past 60'.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.125/226.96, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.025/232.27, Was #12
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.979/233.32, Now #6
Best prior run: 5.887/238.51, Was #6
Both solid runs but no help to either driver.
Left Lane: Mike Preslar Runs 20.957/32.49, Now #25
Best prior run: 6.454/166.93, Was #25
Right Lane: James Spencer Runs 16.518/37.04, Now #27
No Prior Run
Neither driver is in and neither driver gets in. Preslar loses a belt and
Spencer shakes. PTS crew has a look at the right lane at top end.
Left Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.268/223.47, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.076/200.11, Was #16
Right Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.931/238.55, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.819/240.98, Was #1
No. 1 vs. no. 16...except this is qualifying. Munroe wants to move off the
bubble while Newberry works on the race setup. Neither one improves.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.109/230.02, Now #9
Best prior run: 5.948/234.29, Was #9
Right Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.381/217.39, Now #23

No help here either.
Left Lane: Bunny Burkett Runs 6.088/235.02, Now #11
Best prior run: 5.988/234.78, Was #11
Right Lane: Scott Weney Runs 6.436/207.66, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.914/235.97, Was #7
Both drivers thrill the crowd on their burnouts with Weney's tire smoker going
almost to the 1000' mark. It seemed to hurt his run as Scott is forced to drive out
of tire shake just past 100'.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 10.382/73.66, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.360/228.04, Was #22
Dobbs runs feature all the things no driver wants to see. Tire shake, dropped
cylinder and a wasted run. He will need to go big in the final qualifying
session.
Left Lane: Chris Hunt Runs 6.076/227.19, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.060/228.81, Was #14
Nice straight run for Hunt, although no help on the ladder.

slightly off the line and that's all Brand needed. His run looks nice and straight
and he goes to Round 2.
(W) Jimmy Rector ('01 Chevy Camaro) 0.579 5.882 237.17
(L) Philip Hooper ('97 Chevy Camaro) 0.809 6.082 229.35
Another 5.88 for Rector, he'll go to round 2 as Hooper's car and starting line
performance was not good enough here.
(W) Dave Ray (Butler Steel Bldgs '96 Oldsmobile 0.477 6.095 229.16
(L) Monty Todd ('01 Chevy Camaro) 0.485 6.112 231.00

spot. But Ray smells upset and gets it done. Ray had a slight advantage off the
line and ran quicker to knock out Todd. Margin of victory = 0.025 seconds
(approximately 8 feet).
(W) Bob Newberry ('00 Dodge Avenger) 0.512 5.916 237.84
(L) Rob Atchison ('98 Pontiac Firebird) 0.483 6.843 204.45
Newb chooses the right lane as everyone has so far. Atchison's car skates
slightly out of the gate and that's all Newberry needed. Just another solid run for
the number one qualifier. Newberry will get lane choice next round against
Brand.
(W) Mark Thomas (Ethanol Performs '01 Dodge Aven0.571 5.940 235.39
(L) Terry McMillen (Mitel '98 Dodge Avenger) 0.461 6.075 230.53
McMillen has a big mountain to climb here. Thomas was there for the taking
but he got by at about the 1000' mark. Margin of victory = 0.025 seconds
(approximately 8 feet). Thomas will have lane choice vs. Rector in round 2.
(W) Laurie Cannister (Wolf Racing '99 Chevy Cama0.759 5.854 238.26
(L) Bunny Burkett ('00 Dodge Avenger) 0.602 6.077 234.33
One for the ladies here. 2000 Pro Outlaw Champion vs. 1986 Funny Car champ
Burkett. Cannister gets her first round win in a Funny Car. Consistency has been
the key for Cannister all weekend and she marches into round 2. Plus she gets lane
choice over Vouros in the next round.
(W) John Vouros ('00 Pontiac Firebird) 0.532 5.935 232.03
(L) Dan Roman (Absolute Pleasure '99 Pontiac Fir0.524 6.939 139.26

the left lane wall and is forced to give it up. Vouros straight and true and into
round 2.
(W) David Rowe ('94 Oldsmobile Cutlass) 0.477 6.002 232.91
(L) Scott Weney ('99 Chevy Camaro) 0.485 15.982 39.39

2:51 PM We are rolling right along, moving into round 2 of ihra.com Funny Car.
Rowe goes red even though the numbers showed he didn't need to. Ray's reaction time
was pretty good here; it would have been interesting to see this race without the
foul start.

(L) Jimmy Rector ('01 Chevy Camaro) 0.476 5.905 237.63

lane choice over Ray in the semis.
(W) Laurie Cannister (Wolf Racing '99 Chevy Cama0.530 5.877 238.34
(L) John Vouros ('00 Pontiac Firebird) 0.480 5.992 232.35
Cannister has had a magic weekend so far and has a slight performance
advantage here on her 10th competitve run in Funny Car. Big starting line advantage
for Vouros doesn't help as Cannister runs yet another 5.80 pass to power to the
win.
(W) Bob Newberry ('00 Dodge Avenger) 0.495 5.920 239.48
(L) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '01 Pontiac Fire0.449 5.993 229.31

but Newberry has the power to overcome the head start. Brand also loses some parts
in the lights on the run. Margin of victory = 0.027 seconds (approximately 9 feet).
But Newberry loses lane choice to a spirited Cannister in the semis.
