GILLIAM, La. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in ihra.com Funny Car at the 3rd annual Mopar Parts World Finals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Jim Lape Runs 6.478/177.44, Now #1
Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 12.536/55.85, Now #4
3:27 PM Smith shook and shut it down almost immediately. Lape left hard, but the engine went silent on the top end.
Left Lane: Frederick Tigges Runs 6.101/236.59, Now #1
Right Lane: Andy Kelley Runs 6.101/227.88, Now #2
Nice side-by-side show, identical ETs, though off the pace we've come to expect.
Left Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 8.336/126.85, Now #4
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 10.806/77.72, Now #7
Lots of shake in both lanes, Rector calling it quits and Munroe deciding to try again after coasting about 300 feet.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 9.486/92.56, Now #7
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 6.285/231.87, Now #3
More of the same, this time it was Thomas who decided to give it a second shot after heavy initial shake.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 13.020/77.79, Now #12
Right Lane: Bob Newberry Runs 5.851/241.41, Now #1
"Newb" makes a rare IHRA appearance and shows that he hasn't forgotten how to run without a screw blower, a nice, smooth pass, right down the groove. Atchison shook very hard and coasted through.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 15.899/60.53, Now #14
Right Lane: Scott Weney Runs 5.929/235.93, Now #2
Athey's car had the front wheels in the air and the rear tires shaking, so he shut it down. Weney made a nice opening pass, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 7.828/155.02, Now #8
Right Lane: Adam Szeler Runs 6.409/225.15, Now #6
McMillen's car shook hard and he pedaled, then tried again with the same result. Szeler made a full pass, but off the competitive pace.
Left Lane: Gary Rettell No Time, Now #18
Right Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 6.108/235.15, Now #5
Rettell's car didn't fire and was pushed to the side. Gibson's car started chattering the tires and skating around, so he got completely out of the throttle, then back in again to complete the run.
Left Lane: Chris Hunt Runs 6.479/174.53, Now #9
Right Lane: Carl Femerelle Runs 6.582/215.00, Now #10
More of the same "shake and pedal" action in both lanes to close the session.

Results for Elimination Round 1

GILLIAM, La. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in ihra.com
Funny Car at the 3rd annual Mopar Parts World Finals:

 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Dale Brand (Co-Line Welding '92 Firebird) 0.467 6.147 234.70
 (L) Burl Brown ('97 Avenger) 0.558 6.299 225.71
4:11 PM Brown was the surprise of qualifying, jumping into the middle of the field on his last try, but his weekend came to a halt here, late off the line with his car chattering the tires hard on the launch, while Brand was on time and won easily with an off-pace run.
 (W) Billy Gibson (G&H Jewelers '95 Camaro) 0.453 6.025 236.09
 (L) Von Smith (Nitro Fish '00 Firebird) 0.533 11.566 72.44
Smith needed to go two rounds further than Scott Weney just to keep the championship race alive and his car let him down, shaking and then slowing almost immediately. Gibson continues his hot streak of playing giant killer, having won at Budds Creek over Jim Lape, and Weney clinches the 2000 title.
 (W) Jim Lape (Key Parts '98 Camaro) 0.553 11.541 70.41
 (L) Paul Athey ('99 Corvette) 0.485 6.439 223.14
Athey flew a flag out the hatch when he backed up, saying "We'll all miss you Wayne," a tribute to the late Wayne Bailey, whose Top Fuel car Athey drove on a licensing pass Thursday. Then he upset Lape despite an off-pace run, Lape's car shaking and falling silent immediately.

Athey failed fuel check and was disqualified, reinstating Lape.
 (W) Bob Newberry ('00 Avenger) 0.516 6.291 187.13
 (L) Terry McMillen (Mitel '98 Avenger) 0.230(R) 9.056 118.02
McMillen was way early and Newberry was ripe for picking, his car shaking so hard that he had to get completely out of the throttle before he could continue, losing lane choice to Brand in round two.
 (W) Scott Weney (Sheetz Electrical '01 Corvette)0.496 5.928 237.92
 (L) Andy Kelley (K&K Truck Service '00 Avenger) 0.449 6.506 160.40
Weney celebrated clinching the 2000 championship by making a full-course burnout, crossing the finish line before he started to back up. Then he put the capper on the feat by winning easily with low ET of the round so far.
 (W) Rob Atchison ('97 Firebird) 0.484 6.032 232.87
 (L) Chris Hunt (T&C Race Cars '00 Corvette) 0.456 6.061 231.68
Very good drag race, Hunt with the holeshot and Atchison running him down in the lights to win by a margin of victory = 0.001 seconds (approximately 4 inches). Weney will have lane choice when they meet next round.
 (W) Jimmy Rector (Holbrook Performance '99 Aveng0.475 5.967 241.07
 (L) Terry Munroe ('96 Firebird) 0.457 6.302 202.48
Munroe gave it a shot, but his car went left, out near the wall, and he had to lift, allowing Rector to drive away for an easy win. Rector will have lane choice against Lape in round two.
 (W) Adam Szeler (Mad Mechanic '96 Achieva) 0.494 6.100 231.40
 (L) Frederick Tigges ('98 Camaro) 0.526 6.147 236.92
Another good drag race, Szeler with the better light and the better run to win by a margin of victory = 0.079 seconds (approximately 27 feet). Gibson will have lane choice in round two.

Weney made another full-track burnout. Atchison's car spewed a lot of black smoke when they fired the engine. Atchison deep-staged just as Weney staged, then left way early. Weney goes to the semifinals, losing lane choice to Lape.
