5:47 PM The first Friday "Night of Fire" is starting
early because there's some severe weather headed this way,
lightning already visible behind the tower. We open with the
Shootout, always a wild show. Detrick gets the win at both ends of
the track.

Al Matarazzo ('88 Thunderbird)
Just as these two started to stage, a light sprinkle started to
dot the racing surface. So they shut them down and pushed the cars
back off the launch pad. Stand by for updates.

12:38 PM Saturday - and we resume. Both cars with problems,
Stawicki slowly going down the track and Thomas violently
fishtailing on the top end - but he won it anyway.

Rich left first and then pulled away to win by a margin of victory
= 0.314 seconds (approximately 92 feet).

(W) Richard Penland ('95 Corvette) 0.667 7.939 170.95
Swinarski was a no-show, giving Penland a free pass to the
semifinals. In the semifinals it's Matarazzo with lane choice over
Thomas and Detrick over Penland.

Penland's car was a real slug, slow off the line and slow to
respond after that.

Thomas had his hands full, the rear tires spinning and the car
fishtailing violently. Rich had no problems and easily earned lane
choice against Detrick in the finals.
