DARLINGTON, S.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock at the 28th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Charlie Peppers Runs 13.492/87.67, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.821/193.77, Now #1
We've already seen the Pro Outlaw cars endure a rather unusual session, so this first benchmark for the weekend should prove interesting. To spice things up even more, we begin with a classic Ford v. Chevy match. A large group of Pro Stock crew chiefs are watching intently, each hoping to glean a piece of information from these pacesetters as to whether the setup they've dialed in are even close to what the track wants. Though all head back to the staging lanes after the run, it's not certain that they learned anything. Spiess is overly aggressive, spinning the tires hard. His Monte Carlo moves to the right, and Spiess finesses the car back in the groove after a few wigs and wags. No help at all for those who are due to run in the left lane, as veteran racer Charlie Pepper's Ford engine seemed to stumble badly when it went on the chip, and then popped and banged until the 150 foot mark.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 21.850/33.86, Now #4
Right Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.734/193.77, Now #1
Miller's engine RPM took off right as he let the clutch out, and that was the end of the run. In the other lane, Nabors makes a nice baseline pass, though the car sounded a bit flat in the middle of the track.
Left Lane: Mark Hay Runs 11.176/116.27, Now #4
Right Lane: Harold Robinson Runs 6.896/198.61, Now #3
Hay's car makes a very nasty move as soon as it leaves, and after a couple of scary swerves, gets the Firebird back under control. Robinson's car rode the wheelie bars for a looooong time, and ran hard and straight to the finish line.
Left Lane: Robert Killian Runs 15.617/74.68, Now #8
Right Lane: Johnny McLain Runs 7.024/199.14, Now #6
Killian was off the throttle immediately. McLain makes an unremarkable run in his Dodge.
Left Lane: Tom Lee Runs 15.243/79.33, Now #8
Right Lane: not on file Runs 6.808/203.77, Now #2
We do not know who is in the right lane, but he lays down a great pass.
Left Lane: Jon Yoak Runs 6.709/207.21, Now #1
Right Lane: Doug Patton Runs 17.840/57.19, Now #9
Yoak's car is a bit soft off the line, which is probably a good idea right now. He runs a very nice ET on a fairly conservative setup.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 10.337/133.58, Now #5
Right Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.746/206.80, Now #2
Here's a match up of two of the class' young heavy hitters, and this time it's Ford vs Pontiac. Before the round Holbrook's crew chief Butch Peterson tells us that he's ready for the new season with new engine pieces making more power. In this case, there's no chance to use that extra power as the car sounds a lot like Pepper's. It pops and bangs on the way to the chip; all that commotion caused Holbrook to roll the beams and leave before the tree came down to boot.
Left Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.823/202.52, Now #5
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.695/207.69, Now #2
Here's another car the rest of the class is keeping a close eye on. Montecalvo Steve Cultrera does something no other crew chief in the right lane has done so far this round: he lines his driver in the same spot as the previous car. It pays off, as the strong Citgo car makes a great pass and vaults to the second spot.
Left Lane: Rocky Watford Runs 6.763/205.66, Now #4
Right Lane: Tony Fox Runs 7.458/193.21, Now #8
Watford's gorgeous car doesn't show much damage from the accident earlier today; and no it wasn't an on track incident. The gusty winds here today collapsed part of his trailer's awning on top of the show-quality car. Though the car is a bit lazy off the line, that might be the best plan here as Watford makes a nice move at mid track and posts a nice ET.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 2.406/0.00, Now #2
Right Lane: Fred Brown Runs 7.543/134.44, Now #10
Gahm shut off at 60 foot, Brown drives 1500 feet to the finish line.
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.766/202.00, Now #6
Right Lane: Floyd Cheek Runs 11.509/78.96, Now #14
Nothing spectacular about the Summit car's run but that's good news as Baker put down a nice baseline that should yield some valuable data. Cheek won't be as happy as his car spun very hard, shook, moved up and down and allllll around -- and that was within the first 100 feet. Floyd has enough track time to know it's time to quit.
Left Lane: Doug Kirk Runs 6.742/205.66, Now #4
Right Lane: Sherrie Kamp Runs 7.026/198.88, Now #11
Kirk's Probe shakes very hard, and then looks real different as the car straightens out and the rear of the car seems to rise and rise and rise in second and third gears. No obvious problems in the other lane, but the ET just isn't there.
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.779/203.83, Now #9
Wilson also leaves fairly soft; there's been enough gyrations so far that his crew chief decided to back things up a bit. The Ford makes a strong move to half track, seems to stay in 4th gear forever, and still puts up a good pass that will give the team something to tune from. This single ends the round.

Best prior run: 13.492/87.67, Was #21
For the second session in a row, Peppers' engine shoots ducks on the starting line as it goes on the chip. Peppers tries to leave, but the engine is breaking up so badly he clicks it by 60 feet.
Left Lane: Tim Nabors Runs 6.762/205.01, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.734/205.94, Was #7

                                 No Prior Run
In the race preview coverage in IHRA's Drag Review, Montecalvo was downrated since his new crew chief would need time to come up to speed. That crew chief is Steve Cultrera, and sends a statement to whoever wrote the prediction. Montecalvo blasts right down the middle and improves from his previous run, even though the conditions are worse. He remains the quickest Pro Stocker on the grounds. Drag Review, meet Steve Cultrera.
Left Lane: Doug Patton Runs 17.690/53.09, Now #25
                                  No Prior Run

                                 No Prior Run
That was some world-class shake as soon as the clutch came out, the car's first move was vertical -- it was jumping up and down before it moved ten feet.
Right Lane: Rocky Watford Runs 6.783/206.32, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.763/205.66, Was #13

Results for Elimination 1

DARLINGTON, S.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock at the 28th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals:
 W/L Driver RT ET Speed

 (W) Tim Nabors (Chevy) 0.421 6.754 205.41
 (L) Doug Kirk (Ford) 0.463 6.762 205.66
The sun is shining directly on the track. We've got a considerably strong, gusting wind that appears to be from directly behind the cars. I don't remember all the flag rules for wind speed, but the flags are waving straight out from their poles. Nope, no flapping.
 (W) Gene Wilson (Ford) 0.474 6.718 206.99
 (L) Jerry Yeoman (Pontiac) 0.503 6.739 206.61
Yeoman was late and Wilson quivered the tires through 1st and 2nd, but the car settles down and Wilson crosses the line first
 (W) Steve Spiess (Chevy) 0.486 6.688 207.59
 (L) Chris Holbrook (Ford) 0.420 6.991 201.73
Holbrook is badly out of shape, and hands the race to Spiess The right lane seems to be very tricky at about 175 feet out.
 (W) Ed Machacek (Pont) 0.467 6.765 205.22
 (L) Carl Baker (Ford) 0.540 6.738 206.76
 (W) Jon Yoak (Ford) 0.449 6.703 208.55
 (L) Rocky Watford (Chevy) 0.510 8.187 121.88
 (W) Tom Lee (Ford) 0.462 6.757 206.67
 (L) Wally Stroupe (Chevy) 0.438 6.826 205.19
 (W) Dwayne Rice (Pont) 0.546 6.710 206.92
 (L) Floyd Cheek (Ford) 0.469 8.306 114.19
Rice is late, which is unusual for him. Cheek has the race in hand, but only until 200 feet. His Probe gets way out of shape, and only Cheek's experience and skill keep him off the guard rail. Rice shakes, moves around, but still runs a nice 6.71.
 (W) John Montecalvo (Chevy) 0.467 6.686 206.89
 (L) Mark Hay (Pont) 0.620 6.794 204.94
Montecalvo is running like a bracket car. If he were running 8.90s, that would be good news for the rest of the Pro Stock field. But since he's been consistently the quickest cars here, he leaves the other competitors wondering how they're going to get by him.

DARLINGTON, S.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Sunoco Race Fuels Pro Stock at the 28th annual Prolong Super Lubricants Winter Nationals:

 (L) Dwayne Rice (Pont) 0.516 6.715 207.24
3:18 PM We open the second round with a good drag race, the margin of victory = 0.019 seconds (approximately 6 feet), Rice unable to make up Wilson's holeshot despite being quicker at every intermediate timer.
 (W) Jon Yoak (Ford) 0.463 6.692 207.85
 (L) Ed Machacek (Pont) 0.396(R) 6.758 206.32
Machacek took a shot at the tree and just missed. Yoak made a nice run, nonetheless.
 (W) Steve Spiess (Chevy) 0.510 6.697 207.11
 (L) Tom Lee (Ford) 0.545 6.725 207.66
Another good race, the margin of victory = 0.063 seconds (approximately 19 feet). Lee's car got a bit sideways on the launch, which may have contributed to the outcome. Spiess will have lane choice against Wilson in the semifinals.
 (W) John Montecalvo (Chevy) 0.424 6.651 207.98
 (L) Tim Nabors (Chevy) 0.517 6.769 206.64
Montecalvo left way ahead of Nabors, the difference easily visible to the eye. He won the other end of the track too, a nice run that will have Yoak trying to find an edge somewhere for their semifinals meeting.
