DARLINGTON, S.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying
in Mopar Performance Parts Pro Modified at the 28th annual Prolong
Super Lubricants Winter Nationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.437/217.42, Now #1
Right Lane: Mel Eaves Runs 8.859/119.73, Now #2
12:16 PM Pittman is new to IHRA Pro Mod, but he's run Super Chevy
and Scotty Cannon is standing out there, showing his approval of
the run.
Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 8.452/110.16, Now #2
Right Lane: David Roemer Runs 22.706/33.47, Now #4
Critchley's run looked pretty good to half track, but shut it off,
so had a problem we couldn't see. Roemer was off the throttle
early.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.434/215.58, Now #1
Right Lane: Michael Neal Runs 6.756/191.97, Now #3
Two good runs, Neal's car trailing puffs of smoke on the top end.
Left Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 6.404/222.80, Now #1
Right Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 6.535/208.10, Now #4
Mauney screamed down the left lane, but to half track O'Dell was
right with him. Then Mauney pulled away and O'Dell's engine
started eating pistons.
Left Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.497/211.39, Now #4
Right Lane: Chris Cline Runs 6.734/193.27, Now #6
Spiering is sporting ECW sponsorship this year and makes an
extreme run to match. Cline's car steadily drifted left and he
just missed the timing markers at the finish line.
Left Lane: Dwayne White Runs 7.874/179.76, Now #8
Right Lane: Dale Westfall Runs 22.425/33.17, Now #11
Both cars spun the tires hard, Westfall worse than White.
Left Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 7.072/201.76, Now #9
Right Lane: Wayne Turkelson Runs 6.537/214.93, Now #6
Turkelson is an infrequent runner, but he made a nice pass here.
Kammes fell off the pace early in the run, the problem not
evident.
Left Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.524/212.86, Now #6
Right Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 6.424/218.02, Now #2
Gray moves right into the top part of the field on a nice opening
pass.
Left Lane: Chuck Nuytten Runs 6.628/206.13, Now #10
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.489/214.96, Now #5
Hood's car was all over the right lane and he still clocked a good
time.
Left Lane: Buzz Varner Runs 8.052/112.18, Now #16
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.411/220.98, Now #2
Billes nailed it with the '63 Studebaker, a nice, quick run, only
one major course correction we could see.
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.486/219.94, Now #6
Stott's car started to dive to the right at half track and he
drove through it nicely to save the run.
Left Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.483/214.14, Now #7
Right Lane: Barney Squiers Runs 6.473/213.64, Now #6
Two nice runs, side-by-side. The top ten cars are all under 6.5
seconds on their first pass of the weekend.
Left Lane: Randy Boler Runs 8.218/111.91, Now #21
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.420/218.48, Now #3
"Tricky Rickie" makes it look easy, right down the
groove. Boler's car chattered the tires and skated all over the
lane.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 11.044/74.83, Now #25
Right Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 6.740/203.58, Now #17
Castellana had the wheels up and was headed for the centerline,
wisely shutting it down. Stroaight pass for Wasko, but off the
pace.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.456/218.23, Now #7
Right Lane: Terry Housley Runs 6.855/208.75, Now #20
Nice run by Stott - now the top twelve are under 6.5 seconds.
Left Lane: Ed Burnley Runs 6.721/205.32, Now #18
Right Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 6.470/217.70, Now #8
Burnely appeared to be on a good pass, but then the car twitched
and tried to go to the right. Nice pass by Brinsfield, now the top
thirteen are under 6.5 seconds.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 10.361/84.35, Now #30
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.422/219.29, Now #4
Hoover shook and abandoned the run, but Vick made a nice pass to
make it fourteen under 6.5 seconds on their first pass.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.551/212.06, Now #19
Right Lane: Billy Harper Runs 6.450/215.34, Now #8
Hahn comes up short in the Summit Corvette, but Harper joins those
in the forties, making it fifteen cars in the forties in the first
session.

This is a Dodge Viper - no kidding. It's in a really basic blue,
just leaving the Haas shop in the last couple of the days. Jenkins
has a horrible 60 foot, moves left, moves right, wiggles through
the middle of the track --- and puts his Viper into the show on
the car's first pass down the track! Amazing.

DARLINGTON, S.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Mopar Performance Parts Pro Modified at the 28th

W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Tommy Gray ('53 Corvette) 0.440 6.419 219.86
(L) Rickie Smith ('63 Corvette) 0.469 6.414 218.90
This is a great first round matchup with a couple veteran Pro Mod
drivers here. On paper this should be the closest race of the day.
Gray is out of the box first and has the power to hold off the
quicker Smith for the win.
(W) Mitch Stott ('63 Corvette) 0.535 6.479 205.79
(L) Harold Martin ('00 Firebird) 0.899 6.489 221.78
Martin was real late off the line, but Stott had the power to take
the win anyway.
(W) Dale Brinsfield ('67 Camaro) 0.481 6.518 217.14
(L) Alan Pittman ('41 Willys) 0.502 (Broke)
We had a the big starting line burn down here. Both drivers stage
and then just sit there for well over minute. Finally, Pittman
turns on the stage light and Brinsfield pulls in right after him.
Brinsfield is out of the gate first and never looks back. If he
would of he could of seen Pittman head straight for the guardrail
right off the starting line. He pedals once has he attempts to get
it back into the groove, and then crosses the centerline.
(W) Steve Vick ('68 Camaro) 0.431 6.411 219.33
(L) Billy Harper ('68 Barracuda) 0.455 6.402 218.19
Vick with the starting line advantage and just extends it from
there to take the win. Margin of victory = 0.015 seconds
(approximately 5 feet).
(W) Ed Hoover ('63 Corvette) 0.518 8.246 107.86
(L) Shannon Jenkins ('41 Willys) 0.375(R) 6.521 221.38
Jenkins leaves way early and gives Hoover the freebie. Hoover has
trouble around half track and clicks it off.
(W) Al Billes ('53 Studebaker) 0.498 6.376 221.52
(L) Ronnie Hood ('63 Corvette) 0.548 6.442 220.69
Billes with the light and runs another 6.30 to take the win light.
(W) Tommy Mauney ('41 Willys) 0.526 6.372 220.69
(L) Barney Squiers ('41 Willys) 0.455 6.769 185.41
Squiers leaves on Mauney and the chase is on. Squiers has him
covered until just past half track when a big puff of smoke comes
from the car. Mauney takes advantage and the win light.
(W) Quain Stott ('63 Corvette) 0.482 6.403 227.42
(L) Fred Hahn ('54 Corvette) 0.503 6.484 219.79
This is a rematch of the finals from last year. Stott leaves first
and Hahn has tire shake right off the starting line. Hahn drives
through the tire shake, but not in time to chase down Stott.

(L) Mitch Stott ('63 Corvette) 0.495 7.367 144.58
3:32 PM So far the weather is holding - if we can finish by 6 PM,
we should beat the rain. After an even start, Brinsfield pulled
away while Stott had problems on the top end of the run.
(W) Ed Hoover ('63 Corvette) 0.495 6.388 221.23
(L) Steve Vick ('68 Camaro) 0.482 6.619 182.97
Vick ate some pistons on the top end and fell off the pace, Hoover
an easy winner.
(W) Tommy Gray ('53 Corvette) 0.476 6.356 220.22
(L) Al Billes ('53 Studebaker) 0.475 6.376 223.06
A great drag race here, the margin of victory = 0.019 seconds
(approximately 6 feet), Gray with a slight edge on the top end of
the run to take a narrow win.
(W) Quain Stott ('63 Corvette) 0.479 6.391 222.77
(L) Tommy Mauney ('41 Willys) 0.501 6.765 164.31
Numbers 4 and 5 last year, this, too, promised to be a close
match. It was, to half track, then Mauney's engine started eating
parts and Stott moved out to win by a big margin.

his best lap of the weekend.
(W) Tommy Gray ('53 Corvette) 0.476 6.355 219.83
(L) Quain Stott ('63 Corvette) 0.478 6.404 220.73
Another good race, the start pretty even for this one and Gray
outrunning Stott to earn lane choice against Hoover in the finals.
The margin of victory? 0.051 seconds (approximately 17 feet).

(L) Tommy Gray ('53 Corvette) 0.395(R) 6.350 220.40
6:02 PM A '63 split-window against a '53 "bathtub." Gray
chose the left side against the local but then threw it in the
trashcan with a too-early launch. Hoover needed the break because
his car hooked with one rear tire and spun the other, the car
violently trying to go through the guard rail and Hoover reaching
deep into his driving skills to save it and stay legal. He did, no
contact with either the wall or the centerline, for the victory.
