ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the 35th annual Holley Spring Nationals Presented by Castrol GTX listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Bill Furr Runs 6.639/203.31, Now #1
Right Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.773/203.43, Now #2
9:04 PM It's going to be tough to see these two-wheeled missiles in the darkness, but we'll give it a shot. No problems with the first pair, the exhaust flames right down the middle of each lane.
Left Lane: Jack Romine No Time, Now #4
Right Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 7.732/180.84, Now #3
Looked like Romine broke the chain on the launch. Mancuso spun the rear tire, eased off on the throttle, tried again, and had to back off at least once more to get to the other end.
Left Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.493/210.77, Now #1
Right Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 7.942/135.86, Now #5
Turner breaks the track ET record for Nitro Harley on a nice run, just 0l.004 seconds slower than the World record. Mattioli had problems, couldn't see what they were in the darkness.
Left Lane: Dale Nungesser Runs 6.857/199.70, Now #4
Right Lane: Jim McClure Runs 6.952/217.60, Now #5
Both runs looked okay, no obvious problems as far as we could see.
Left Lane: Ray Price Runs 13.257/62.79, Now #8
Right Lane: Mike Romine No Time, Now #10
Two broken bikes here, Romine never leaving the line and Price's putting out a shower of sparks about 200 feet off the starting line. Looked like a clutch failure.
Left Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 7.075/197.42, Now #6
Right Lane: Allen Peterson Runs 7.269/189.10, Now #7
No obvious problems here, but both will need to pick the pace up a bunch to be competitive.
Left Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.860/208.71, Now #5
Right Lane: Bob Spina No Time, Now #14
Final pair. Spina broke on the launch, possibly a broken chain. Vancil made a good opening pass, clean and straight.

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the 35th annual Holley Spring Nationals Presented by Castrol GTX listing lane, rider name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jim McClure Runs 6.792/212.96, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.952/217.60, Was #6
Right Lane: Ray Price No Time, Now #11
Best prior run: 13.257/62.79, Was #11
1:02 PM It will take a run better than Allen Peterson's 7.269 to get in - which shouldn't be a tough task. But Price comes up short when his bike veers left on the launch, taking out the 330-foot reflector block. It looked like his wheelie bars were set wrong.
Left Lane: Bob Spina Runs 19.026/0.00, Now #12
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bill Furr Runs 6.822/199.32, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.639/203.31, Was #2
Spina broke a chain last night and coasted slowly down the track. Looked like he did it again, the engine going silent and Spina looking back over his shoulder to see what happened.
Left Lane: Mike Romine Runs 7.152/193.52, Now #8
                                  No Prior Run
Right Lane: Steve Moore No Time, Now #15
                                  No Prior Run
Romine dropped the hammer and the chain broke, Romine makes the field, replacing Peterson on the bubble.
Left Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.951/171.69, Now #7
Best prior run: 7.732/180.84, Was #10
Right Lane: Jay Turner No Time, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.493/210.77, Was #1
The 1998 and 1999 champions were supposed to be paired off here, but Turner elected to skip this session. Mancuso drifted left all the way down the track, finally backing off when he got too close to the wall.
Left Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 7.421/175.52, Now #11
Best prior run: 7.942/135.86, Was #11
Right Lane: Dale Nungesser Runs 6.958/192.88, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.857/199.70, Was #5
Left Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.772/208.39, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.773/203.43, Was #3
Right Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 20.950/46.25, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.075/197.42, Was #8
Emery broke on the launch and coasted through. Stordeur should be bracket racing with Mancuso's second bike, within a thousandth of his first run.
Left Lane: Allen Peterson Runs 7.050/191.81, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.269/189.10, Was #10
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.689/210.67, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.860/208.71, Was #6
The weather is changing rapidly here, the clouds now dark and low, the temperature dropping, and a stiff breeze blowing from left to right across the track. The final pair manages to overcome the conditions to step up, Peterson bumping Emery and Vancil moving to the top half of the field.

 (L) Allen Peterson (Coats Materials '95 Harley) 0.477 6.917 222.03
12:56 PM Turner made this look easy, Peterson fighting for balance, yet recording an amazing speed.
 (W) Jim McClure ('99 Harley) 0.528 6.809 211.49
 (L) Steve Stordeur (Mancuso Racing '98 Harley) 0.485 7.080 170.36
An upset, Stordeur falling off the pace after a good launch. McClure wins easily, but loses lane choice to Turner next round.
 (W) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso Racing '98 Harley) 0.548 7.610 182.92
 (L) Bill Furr (Belt Drives Ltd '99 Harley) 0.522 8.180 119.12
Furr looked like an easy winner here, way ahead while Mancuso fought for balance. But then something broke on Furr's bike and Mancuso recovered to win handily.

3:43 PM The Professional semifinals open with the two-wheeled Nitro Harley rockets. McClure had problems going straight, the bike veering left, forcing him to shut it down to miss the centerline reflectors. Turner's bike also went toward the centerline on the launch, but he was able to lean over far enough to straighten it out for a good pass.
 (W) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso Racing '98 Harley) 0.527 6.664 198.03
 (L) Doug Vancil (Vance & Hines '00 Harley) 0.536 7.483 202.91
Vancil smoked the tire on the launch and Mancuso was basically unchallenged, but had a close call with the wall in the shutdown area. He missed it, by >< this much. Turner will have lane choice against Mancuso in the final round.
