ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1
qualifying in ihra.com Funny Car at the 35th annual Holley
Spring Nationals Presented by Castrol GTX listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in
order following run:
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.150/219.26, Now #2
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.943/241.37, Now #1
7:32 PM Now the floppers take their turn. Atchison fried
his Chevy engine on the top end, lots of smoke from 1,000
feet on. Nice run by Thomas right out of the box.
Left Lane: Sam Leland Runs 6.024/232.39, Now #2
Right Lane: Jim Lape Runs 6.248/232.11, Now #4
Leland had his hands full, the car out of the groove all
the way down the track, way to the left and close to the
wall.
Left Lane: Jeff Lancaster Runs 6.501/211.03, Now #5
Right Lane: Paul Athey No Time, Now #6
Athey left early and got no time. Lancaster's car darted
toward the centerline about 300 feet out, then out toward
the wall at mid-track. He made it to the finish line okay,
but we were holding our breath watching him.
Left Lane: Santo Volpe Runs 7.999/112.26, Now #6
Right Lane: Paul Zgoda No Time, Now #8
Volpe is a well-known Comp Eliminator pilot, driving the
Crown Vic for his Reading, Penn. neighbors. He launched,
shook, pedaled, steered, and then gave it up. Zgoda
pre-staged and then just sat there, apparently with a
clutch failure since the car wouldn't move despite high
RPMs.
Left Lane: Steve Ruda No Time, Now #10
Right Lane: James Spencer Runs 6.238/224.17, Now #4
Ruda's starter motor didn't want to come off the front of
the engine and he was very late with his burnout. The
starter signaled him to shut it off, but he tried to stage
anyway and rolled right past the line before stopping.
Spencer's car went through the clutch, the RPMs up and the
car going nowhere.
Left Lane: David Rowe Runs 11.808/72.25, Now #9
Right Lane: Herb Rodgers Runs 6.180/217.25, Now #4
Rowe lists his occupation as "official CompuLink
Styrofoam block stress tester" after taking out
several of the centerline reflectors in Darlington. He
almost changed that to "official concrete wall
tester" here, the car making a hard left turn
immediately and Rowe lucky to be able to shut it down
before hitting the wall. Meanwhile, Rodgers made a
nice-looking pass, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Scott Weney Runs 6.120/233.03, Now #4
Right Lane: Frederick Tigges Runs 6.044/231.12, Now #3
Weney showed his driving skills here, the car diving
toward the wall and Weney driving away without lifting.
Tigges made a nice run, but nobody was watching.
Left Lane: Von Smith Runs 6.156/218.62, Now #7
Right Lane: Bunny Burkett Runs 6.027/228.58, Now #3
Smith avoided the wall magnet in the left lane, but was
way off his usual pass. Nice pass by "Bunny and the
Boys," one that should keep her in the field.
Left Lane: Russel Mudd No Time, Now #17
Right Lane: Andy Kelley No Time, Now #18
Kelley fired first and came to a stop after his burnout,
the engine silent. Mudd rolled into the water and was
signaled to shut it off.
Left Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 6.232/233.76, Now #9
Right Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.534/207.27, Now #13
Munroe shook and got completely out of the throttle on the
launch, killing his ET. Clean pass by Gibson.
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 12.041/59.40, Now #17
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.990/233.88, Now #2
Rector launched, then something let go with a flash of
sparks from the region of the clutch. Very nice pass by
Brand, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Bobby Baucom Runs 6.145/218.69, Now #7
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.188/225.26, Now #11
Two clean, straight runs to get these two into the
provisional field, but those times might not hold up
through tomorrow.
Left Lane: Bill Naves Runs 6.349/217.04, Now #15
Right Lane: Gerry Thalacker Runs 6.593/220.87, Now #18
This is Thalacker's first outing in 2000. Two clean runs,
but neither car was very quick off the starting line.
Left Lane: Bruce Peterson JrRuns 6.114/227.04, Now #6
Right Lane: Jim Phillips Runs 6.132/228.46, Now #8
Peterson shook and danced around a lot, but never lifted.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.214/196.93, Now #14
McMillen shook and danced around in the middle of the run.
Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.516/217.35, Now #20
Bogolo's car drifted steadily toward the wall and he had
to lift at mid-track to stay off the concrete.
Left Lane: Russel Mudd No Time, Now #29
Mudd had to shut off earlier when the car in the other
lane broke on the burnout. Mudd made his burnout, then
backed up, and as he started to pull forward to stage the
engine stalled.
Right Lane: Phillip Hooper Runs 6.861/217.63, Now #23
Hooper is a former ADBA drag boat champion in the blown
alcohol category. He two-stepped it off the starting line
and then dodged the centerline markers all the way to the
finish line. That's it for the floppers, Pro Mod is next.

Results for Qualifying 2 |
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2
qualifying in ihra.com Funny Car at the 35th annual Holley
Spring Nationals Presented by Castrol GTX listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position
in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and
position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Paul Zgoda Runs 7.889/125.00, Now #24
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo No Time, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.516/217.35, Was #20
11:50 AM Bogolo's throttle hung at the end of the burnout
- possibly a restraint strap in the butterflies - and he
had to pull the fuel cutoff to keep it from
self-destructing. Zgoda was very sluggish on the launch, a
1.157 60-foot time, and gave it up at mid-track.
Left Lane: Jim Lape Runs 6.006/234.78, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.248/232.11, Was #17
Right Lane: David Rowe Runs 5.993/233.48, Now #3
No Prior Run
Both cars had bad days yesterday - and both pulled it off
here, Lape right down the groove and Rowe battling with
his car all the way down the track, the car trying to turn
left and cross the centerline. He managed to keep it on a
relatively straight line and both drivers jumped into the
field. That bumps Gibson and Spencer, putting McMillen on
the bubble at 6.214.
Left Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.277/224.02, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.188/225.26, Was #15
Right Lane: Santo Volpe Runs 6.305/225.75, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.999/112.26, Was #26
Ray fell a tenth off his Friday pace, but Volpe got a
good, clean run out of the Crown Vic and ran right down
the groove. The run was too slow to make the field, but it
appears the handling problems are solved.
Left Lane: Frederick Tigges Runs 11.944/70.85, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.044/231.12, Was #7
Right Lane: Bill Naves Runs 6.405/215.68, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.349/217.04, Was #20
Tigges' car shook and bounced toward the wall, so he
wisely shut it down. Naves made a full pass, but needs a
couple tenths to even get close.
Left Lane: Jim Phillips Runs 12.786/66.41, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.132/228.46, Was #10
Right Lane: Jeff Lancaster No Time, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.501/211.03, Was #21
Phillips also shook very hard and skated toward the wall,
also shutting it down. Lancaster overstaged and got no
time, then shook and skated left, taking out the 330-foot
reflector block.
Left Lane: James Spencer Runs 6.268/223.32, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.238/224.17, Was #18
Right Lane: Steve Ruda Runs 6.273/218.58, Now #19
No Prior Run
Ruda recovered from yesterday's disaster, but both need to
find about another tenth to get in the field.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.100/227.54, Now #9
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 6.015/234.21, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.156/218.62, Was #13
Two good runs, Smith's car spinning the tires a bit too
much on the launch, then making it up on the other end.
Athey bumps McMillen, putting Ray on the bubble at 6.188.
Left Lane: Andy Kelley Runs 6.248/226.85, Now #20
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 6.122/233.16, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.232/233.76, Was #18
Gibson bumps Ray, now it's "Mr. Rodgers" on the
bubble at 6.180.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.026/232.75, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.990/233.88, Was #2
Right Lane: Scott Weney Runs 6.019/235.39, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.120/233.03, Was #11
Weney steps up nicely, this run much straighten than
yesterday's knuckle-biter.
Left Lane: Phillip Hooper Runs 11.004/84.45, Now #28
Best prior run: 6.861/217.63, Was #28
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector No Time, Now #30
Best prior run: 12.041/59.40, Was #30
Rector took too long to stage and the tree activated
before he was staged, so he got no time. Hooper's car
lurched off the line, turned left, and ran along the wall
until he gave it up.
Left Lane: Herb Rodgers Runs 6.227/220.58, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.180/217.25, Was #16
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.127/224.40, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.150/219.26, Was #15
Rodgers' car veered way left, maybe there's a car magnet
in that wall? Rodgers was spinning the tires in the gray
stuff and apparently hurt the engine, with an oil fire in
the shutdown area.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.941/239.91, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.943/241.37, Was #1
Right Lane: Bobby Baucom Runs 5.975/233.08, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.145/218.69, Was #15
Thomas backs up his 241.37 mph speed within one percent on
this run, so that's now the World speed record. Nice
side-by-side show to half track, then Thomas pulled away
from Baucom. But Baucom moved well off the bottom of the
ladder, so he'll probably keep that run.
Left Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.272/223.62, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.534/207.27, Was #26
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.279/220.91, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.214/196.93, Was #18
Nice side-by-side show, but neither car makes the show.
Left Lane: Gerry Thalacker Runs 6.183/227.84, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.593/220.87, Was #27
Right Lane: Russel Mudd Runs 7.270/158.93, Now #29
No Prior Run
Thalacker comes up about 0.003 seconds short of the field
on a good run. Mudd's car was sluggish all the way through
his run.
Right Lane: Bruce Peterson JrRuns 10.406/83.35, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.114/227.04, Was #12
Peterson launched, shook, and shut off to close the
session.

Results for Elimination 1 |
ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in ihra.com Funny Car at the 35th annual
Holley Spring Nationals Presented by Castrol GTX:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Billy Gibson (Camaro) 0.503 5.868 241.97
(L) Bobby Baucom (Firebird) 0.530 6.012 212.53
12:20 PM Baucom went about 1,500 feet, his car trying to
cross the centerline several times. Gibson takes a big
upset win with his best run of the weekend, by a quarter
of a second.
(W) Rob Atchison (Firebird) 0.494 6.069 226.51
(L) Mark Thomas (Avenger) 0.502 8.713 103.83
Thomas overpowered the track, the rear tires smoking and
shaking, the car getting very sideways before he lifted.
Another upset, Atchison right down the groove.
(W) Bruce Peterson Jr (Avenger) 0.869 6.092 214.76
(L) Dale Brand (Firebird) 0.486 6.615 230.10
Brand was on time and Peterson was very late, but then
Brand began shaking and skating and Peterson was able to
catch up, despite having to pedal through shake himself,
for our third upset in a row.
(W) Jimmy Rector (Avenger) 0.530 6.228 169.68
(L) Jim Phillips (Firebird) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Phillips left before the tree started and Rector just sat
there until the green came on, then launched, ran to half
track, and shut off, the first non-upset of the round.
(W) Paul Athey (Corvette) 0.451 6.186 227.80
(L) David Rowe (Cutlass) 0.475 6.332 231.48
Another upset, Rowe finding traction problems in the right
lane. Athey will face Peterson next round, Peterson with
lane choice.
(W) Jim Lape (Camaro) 0.479 6.112 234.29
(L) Frederick Tigges (Camaro) 0.000(R) (Broke)
No upset here, Tigges unable to answer the call and Lape
with a competition single to advance to round two. He will
face Gibson, Gibson with lane choice after lape's car
shook and bounced its way through the first 300 feet.
(W) Von Smith (Firebird) 0.505 5.899 239.53
(L) Bunny Burkett (Avenger) 0.386(R) 7.484 169.93
Bunny laid down a match-race burnout, long and smoky. She
left early and then shook hard, the car bouncing to the
300-foot mark before she gave it up. Probably didn't
matter, Smith streaked down the groove on a very good run,
showing that it's not the lane, it's the setup. Smith has
lane choice against Atchison.
(W) Scott Weney (Firebird) 0.587 5.894 240.25
(L) Sam Leland (Avenger) 0.379(R) 6.078 220.62
Both cars shook and fishtailed for the first 300 feet, but
Weney drove through it with an amazing lap to advance and
have lane choice against Rector in round two.

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2
eliminations in ihra.com Funny Car at the 35th annual
Holley Spring Nationals Presented by Castrol GTX:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Bruce Peterson Jr (Avenger) 0.507 6.075 227.31
(L) Paul Athey (Corvette) 0.457 6.507 182.62
2:12 PM Athey was late answering the call and barely made
it to the lanes in time to make a short burnout. Peterson
patiently waited while Athey's crew thrashed to fire the
car, then both cars made their burnouts and staged.
Surprisingly, even after all the confusion, Athey got a
big holeshot, but the car let him down on the top end,
nosing over and letting Peterson by for an easy win.
(W) Von Smith (Firebird) 0.464 5.945 236.96
(L) Rob Atchison (Firebird) 0.465 6.118 227.15
These two left as one, but then it was all Smith, the
Nitro Fish entry running right down the groove, leaving
Atchison way behind, winning by a margin of victory =
0.174 seconds (approximately 58 feet).
(W) Billy Gibson (Camaro) 0.472 5.868 241.80
(L) Jim Lape (Camaro) 0.473 5.986 235.89
Wow! Gibson once again runs a mid-5.8 elapsed time and
backs up his earlier 241.97 as a World speed record. It
was a good race, but Gibson had too much on the top end,
winning by a margin of victory = 0.119 seconds
(approximately 41 feet).
(W) Scott Weney (Firebird) 0.450 5.921 239.31
(L) Jimmy Rector (Avenger) 0.496 5.881 237.84
Weney won this one at the starting line, his holeshot
enough to hold Rector off and win by a margin of victory =
0.006 seconds (approximately 2 feet) Weney will have lane
choice against Peterson in the semifinals.

(L) Bruce Peterson Jr (Avenger) 0.538 6.103 228.15
4:23 PM Weney left first and ran quicker - for a
surprisingly easy win.
(W) Von Smith (Firebird) 0.482 5.885 239.74
(L) Billy Gibson (Camaro) 0.481 5.953 240.59
Gibson struggled during qualifying, but found something
and has been hot during eliminations. Same story for
Smith, so this was a good drag race. They left together
and Smith proved to have the winning setup, the margin of
victory = 0.067 seconds (approximately 24 feet). Smith
will have lane choice against Weney in the finals.
