Results for Qualifying 1
NORWALK, Ohio - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Mopar Pro
Modified at the 23rd annual Mopar Parts World Nationals presented by Ethanol
Performs! listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in
order following run:
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 9.622/90.57, Now #1
Right Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 9.845/88.97, Now #2
3:50 PM Both cars broke on the launch, sputtering and coasting down the
strip.
Left Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.549/216.90, Now #2
Right Lane: Pat Moore Runs 6.480/218.48, Now #1
Two good runs, this weather a little more to the liking of the nitorus cars
(compressed water still doesn't burn).
Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.440/218.97, Now #1
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 11.087/76.63, Now #6
Stott's Corvette shook and made a move toward the centerline, so he shut it
down. Nice pass by Jenkins, right down the groove.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.460/217.84, Now #2
Right Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 6.469/216.65, Now #3
Gray has been absent from the tour for a few events, nice to see him back
with his popular "Gravedigger" entry. Two more good runs given the
conditions.
Left Lane: Billy Harper Runs 9.854/92.54, Now #8
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 20.551/36.61, Now #10
Both cars went every way but straight, Castellana immediately and Harper
about 300 feet out.
Left Lane: David Roemer Runs 6.645/208.20, Now #7
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.409/221.20, Now #1
Very nice run by Vick, straight and smooth.
Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.533/217.42, Now #6
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 7.798/125.69, Now #9
Since Hahn had problems, perhaps Billes will give us a clue how the blower
cars will fare with the revised rear-end gearing? Nope. His car veered left and
he tiptoed along the centerline a bit before backpedaling. The launch wasn't
particularly strong.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.517/213.16, Now #7
Right Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.488/215.82, Now #6
Left Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 6.473/213.70, Now #6
Right Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.454/216.93, Now #3
Two good runs...
Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.467/215.68, Now #5
Right Lane: Matt Tolbert Runs 7.194/188.99, Now #14
Johnny Rocca's "retirement" didn't last long. Nice pass by his '49 Merc.
Tolbert's "Superbird" was slow off the line and never did pick the pace up.
Left Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 6.639/208.10, Now #14
Right Lane: Chuck Nuytten Runs 6.549/211.53, Now #13
Mauney left hard, a 1.055 60-foot time, but had to pedal it once or
twice.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.775/208.84, Now #16
Right Lane: Chris Cline Runs 8.906/100.00, Now #19
Horrible 60-foot time for Pittman, a 1.148.
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.746/210.64, Now #17
Right Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 6.520/217.21, Now #11
King's blower car also got a bad 60-foot time, a 1.13.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.467/217.21, Now #6
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.438/199.29, Now #2
Two more good runs, Stott slowing on the top end.
Left Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 6.545/212.59, Now #15
Right Lane: Kevin O'Dell No Time, Now #30
O'Dell's Chevelle was all over the lane, taking out the 1,000-foot
reflector.
Left Lane: Mike Stawicki No Time, Now #31
While the track crew was replacing the reflector the call came from the top
end - "We've got rain." We'll be down for a bit while Mother Nature does her
thing. 5:00 PM -- It is raining hard and we are through for the day, the rain so
hard that water is backing up from the storm drains.

Results for Qualifying 2
NORWALK, Ohio - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Mopar Pro
Modified at the 23rd annual Mopar Parts World Nationals presented by Ethanol
Performs! listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position
in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior
to run:
Left Lane: Kevin O'Dell No Time, Now #31
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Mike Stawicki Runs 8.257/124.52, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.434/221.96, Was #2
3:35 PM Stawicki jumped into the #2 spot with his makeup run this morning -
he was in the lanes when we were rained out Wednesday. Here he shook, pedaled,
shook, pedaled, then continued. O'Dell did even worse this round, his car shaking
and then going silent, coasting through so slowly the system timed out before he
reached the finish line.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott No Time, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.438/199.29, Was #3
Right Lane: Dale Brinsfield No Time, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.545/212.59, Was #16
Both cars shook and coasted - a bad round so far.
Left Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 8.747/106.98, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.520/217.21, Was #14
Right Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.486/218.48, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.467/217.21, Was #7
The starting line was scraped just prior to this session and the traction
may be too good - Kammes shaking violently just like the first four cars. Smith,
however, was able to negotiate the launch pad cleanly for a pretty good run.
Left Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 6.461/216.48, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.469/216.65, Was #9
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.573/219.44, Now #19
Best prior run: 9.622/90.57, Was #25
Hahn did a great job of driving to stay in his lane, his car trying to cross
the centerline all the way down the strip. e came up short and had just one more
shot at making the field, however. Good run for Gray, clean and straight. The
bump, by the way, is Dale Brinsfield's 6.545.
Left Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.603/212.13, Now #20
No Prior Run
Right Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.486/218.76, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.533/217.42, Was #15
Nice pass by Bartunek to move a couple spots away from the bump spot.
Left Lane: Chris Cline Runs 20.616/35.26, Now #30
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.506/216.72, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.517/213.16, Was #14
Cline chattered the tires hard and coasted through. Nice pass by Martin,
clean and straight.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.446/220.37, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.798/125.69, Was #26
Right Lane: David Roemer Runs 19.742/55.30, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.645/208.20, Was #22
Nice-looking pass by Billes, the car smooth and straight with no visible
shake. Not so for Roemer, who shook and then the engine sputtered and died.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 20.195/36.58, Now #29
Best prior run: 20.551/36.61, Was #29
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.442/219.76, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.460/217.84, Was #7
Same story, swap the lanes. Castellana's '57 Bel Air shook very hard, while
Hoover's Corvette steamed down the right lane on a rail.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.373/222.14, Now #1
Best prior run: 11.087/76.63, Was #28
Right Lane: Billy Harper Runs 6.924/205.22, Now #27
Best prior run: 9.854/92.54, Was #27
Stott shows everyone how it's done, a pretty run right down the groove.
Harper's Viper was very sluggish off the line, looked like it was way off on the
clutch setting.
Left Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.408/221.34, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.409/221.20, Was #2
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 8.606/111.94, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.440/218.97, Was #5
Very nice run by Vick. Jenkins' car had the front wheels in the air and the
rear tires shaking, so he shut it down.
Left Lane: Matt Tolbert Runs 6.950/192.49, Now #28
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.507/216.20, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.775/208.84, Was #26
Pittman just misses the cut with a good run. Tolbert is still
struggling.
Left Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 6.447/218.19, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.454/216.93, Was #8
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.457/220.33, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.549/216.90, Was #20
Two nice runs, side by side all the way down the track. The bump is now
Steve Cossis' 6.488, close to the quickest field ever, with a 6.460 bump here last
year.
Left Lane: Pat Moore Runs 6.455/219.12, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.480/218.48, Was #14
Right Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.653/214.08, Now #26
No Prior Run
Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.437/218.80, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.488/215.82, Was #16
Right Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 6.477/215.00, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.473/213.70, Was #14
Cossis moves off the bubble with a very good run, the bump now Bartunek's
6.486.
Left Lane: Chuck Nuytten No Time, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.549/211.53, Was #21
Right Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 16.455/67.93, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.639/208.10, Was #24
Nuytten left before the tree. Mauney shook hard and shut it down.
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.747/209.30, Now #27
Best prior run: 6.746/210.64, Was #27
Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.503/181.15, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.467/215.68, Was #14
Last car. Critchley left hard, a 1.05 60-foot time, and was on a very good
pass, but something broke around the 1,000-foot marker.

Results for Qualifying 3
NORWALK, Ohio - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final, round 3 qualifying in Mopar
Pro Modified at the 23rd annual Mopar Parts World Nationals presented by Ethanol
Performs! listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position
in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior
to run:
Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 6.464/217.04, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.467/215.68, Was #14
Right Lane: Chuck Nuytten No Time, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.549/211.53, Was #21
8:57 PM The final qualifying session opens with John Bartunek on the bubble
at 6.486. Notables not in the field include Fred Hahn and Alan Pittman, both
blower cars. Nuytten never left the starting line. Critchley ran the '49 Merc
through with a solid launch but only a small improvement over his previous
best.
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.561/216.27, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.746/210.64, Was #27
Right Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.408/219.86, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.437/218.80, Was #4
King's Avenger looks like it came right off a showroom floor, with the
blower and rear wing added as aftermarket accessories. He made perhaps a
career-best run here, but came up short. Cossis stepped one rung up the ladder
on a very strong run.
Left Lane: Tommy Mauney Runs 6.436/216.06, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.639/208.10, Was #25
Right Lane: Pat Moore Runs 6.376/220.58, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.455/219.12, Was #10
Mauney has had problems getting the Majesty Group Willys off the starting
line, but had no problems here, a straight, smooth run to bump Bartunek, putting
Roy Wasko on the bump with a 6.473. Meanwhile, Moore made a great run to move
near the top of the ladder.
Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.402/219.54, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.440/218.97, Was #8
Right Lane: Mike Castellana No Time, Now #31
Best prior run: 20.195/36.58, Was #31
Nice run by Jenkins in the "Iceman" Viper. Castellana launched, shook very
hard, and broke, coasting to a stop before the finish line.
Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.428/218.27, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.467/217.21, Was #15
Right Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.555/211.43, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.603/212.13, Was #25
Nice pass by "Tricky Rickie." Spiering improved a bunch, but this is a very
quick field and he missed by about 0.08 seconds.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.362/221.23, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.442/219.76, Was #10
Right Lane: Tim McAmis Runs 11.899/108.54, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.447/218.19, Was #12
McAmis launched, shook, started to turn side ways, and gave it up. Hoover
fired a round down the left lane, right in the groove, very quick and very fast,
to take over the top spot on the ladder.
Left Lane: David Roemer Runs 6.556/210.64, Now #24
Best prior run: 6.645/208.20, Was #26
Right Lane: Kevin O'Dell Runs 9.959/88.03, Now #31
No Prior Run
Two more "wannabes." O'Dell started to skate around at the 330-foot marker
and he lifted - surprising many. Roemer ran it all the way through, but came up
well short of the bump.
Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.505/19.51, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.486/218.76, Was #17
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.324/223.10, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.373/222.14, Was #2
How low can he go? Stott has been a few hundredths quicker than anyone else
lately, Well, he can go low enough to regain the top spot, by almost 0.04 seconds.
Nice pass by Bartunek, but this is close to being a record field.
Left Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.363/219.86, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.457/220.33, Was #13
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.424/221.27, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.446/220.37, Was #11
Two more good runs, smooth and straight.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.946/212.96, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.506/216.72, Was #18
Right Lane: Tommy Gray Runs 6.469/215.65, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.461/216.48, Was #14
The "Undertaker" crew did their usual "Night of Fire" show, dressed as "Grim
Reaper" clones, scythes and all. Martin's car lurched just as the tree came down
and didn;t run well at all. Nice pass by Gray, but slightly slower than his
best.
Left Lane: Mike Stawicki Runs 6.597/219.79, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.434/221.96, Was #10
Right Lane: Matt Tolbert Runs 6.750/206.35, Now #28
Best prior run: 7.194/188.99, Was #29
Two blower cars faced off here and Stawicki ran strongly on the top end, but
lost a lot in the middle of the run after a strong launch.
Left Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 6.386/215.03, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.473/213.70, Was #16
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.412/221.20, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.408/221.34, Was #6
Wasko moved off the bump spot on a great run, pushing Vick down a rung on
the ladder.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.586/214.59, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.507/216.20, Was #19
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.324/222.80, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.438/199.29, Was #13
Stott makes a great run. By the way, the bump is Critchley's 6.464, just
0.004 seconds away from the quickest field ever.
Left Lane: Billy Harper Runs 6.409/217.07, Now #10
Best prior run: 9.854/92.54, Was #30
Right Lane: Ron Kammes No Time, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.520/217.21, Was #20
Kammes left before the tree. Harper made a great run, bumping Critchley and
putting Gray on the bubble at 6.461.
Left Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 6.635/211.99, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.545/212.59, Was #22
Right Lane: Chris Cline Runs 6.567/210.54, Now #27
No Prior Run
Nope.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn No Time, Now #28
Best prior run: 6.573/219.44, Was #28
Hahn's car left hard, got almost to half track, and crossed the centerline.
He's done for the weekend and the highest-qualified blower car is 11th.
Left Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.577/213.77, Now #29
Best prior run: 6.653/214.08, Was #29
Final car - and Moyer isn't close despite improving almost ba tenth of a
second.

NORWALK, Ohio - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Mopar
Pro Modified at the 23rd annual Mopar Parts World Nationals presented by Ethanol
Performs!:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Steve Vick (Kyles Trucking '68 Camaro) 0.495 6.393 222.66
(L) Steve Cossis (Psychosis '53 Corvette) 0.034(R) 7.888 123.93
4:34 PM These two ran identical ETs in qualifying, Vick getting lane choice
with a higher speed. Cossis got a major red light, extremely early, while Vick
made a very nice pass, his best of the weekend, running for lane choice.
(W) Billy Harper ('00 Viper) 0.472 6.470 216.45
(L) Shannon Jenkins ('00 Viper) 0.439 6.556 219.19
Ironically, two teammates meet in the first round. Good drag race, Jenkins
with a solid holeshot but unable to keep pace with Harper on the top end. The
margin of victory = 0.053 seconds (approximately 17 feet).
(W) Quain Stott (Lee Boy Paving '63 Corvette) 0.474 6.353 223.02
(L) Tommy Gray (Undertaker '53 Corvette) 0.534 6.464 217.18
Gray's only hope here was to get a big holeshot and he didn't even try,
taking his chances. No luck, Stott ran true to form, winning by a margin of
victory = 0.171 seconds (approximately 54 feet) and earning lane choice against
Vick.
(W) Mitch Stott (Radiac Abrasives '63 Corvette) 0.492 6.392 222.77
(L) Tim McAmis (Split Second '63 Corvette) 0.450 6.489 215.79
And the other Stott overcomes McAmis' holeshot to win by a margin of victory
= 0.055 seconds (approximately 17 feet). He also earns lane choice against Harper
in round two.
(W) Roy Wasko ('00 Corvette) 0.506 6.543 205.57
(L) Al Billes (Quaker State '53 Studebaker) 0.494 7.447 135.14
Classic nitrous versus blower confrontation, Billes with a blower. Billes
shook and pedaled, at least twice, while Wasko ran away. But Wasko nipped some
pistons in the lights, trailing white smoke as he coasted to a stop.
(W) Ronnie Hood (Fulwylie M'Sports '63 Corvette)0.460 6.413 219.94
(L) Mike Stawicki ('63 Corvette) 0.452 8.598 102.99
Stawicki's blown engine went away shortly after the launch, but the track is
clean and dry.
(W) Rickie Smith ('63 Corvette) 0.496 6.473 214.21
(L) Pat Moore (Ed Steffey '57 Bel Air) 0.443 10.755 76.21
Moore's car made a hard left turn, then fishtailed violently, forcing him to
shut it down. Smith advances, losing lane choice to Hood.
(W) Ed Hoover (Trussel Constr. '63 Corvette) 0.479 6.468 212.59
(L) Tommy Mauney (Majesty Group Racing '41 Willy0.532 6.503 216.31
Mauney, the last blower car left in eliminations, made a race of it with a
clean, straight run, but Hoover left first and ran a lower ET, winning by a margin
of victory = 0.088 seconds (approximately 28 feet). Hoover also earned lane
choice against Wasko in round two.

(W) Ed Hoover (Trussel Constr. '63 Corvette) 0.453 7.021 144.03
(L) Roy Wasko ('00 Corvette) 0.000(R) (Broke)
6:08 PM Wasko was unable to repair engine damage from round one, so Hoover
gets a "break single." Hoover was on a good pass, but the car moved to the right
and he shut it down around the 1,000-foot marker.
(W) Ronnie Hood (Fulwylie M'Sports '63 Corvette)0.472 6.451 218.30
(L) Rickie Smith ('63 Corvette) 0.469 6.514 209.36
Good drag race to 1,000 feet and then Hood pulled away for the win by a
margin of victory = 0.060 seconds (approximately 18 feet).
(W) Mitch Stott (Radiac Abrasives '63 Corvette) 0.523 15.089 103.83
(L) Billy Harper ('00 Viper) 0.144(R) 7.059 214.08
Harper spun the tires hard on the launch, but his stage light flickered and
he drew the red bulb when he launched. Stott broke - but the red light saved him -
giving lane choice to Hoover in the semifinals.
(W) Quain Stott (Lee Boy Paving '63 Corvette) 0.459 6.336 223.43
(L) Steve Vick (Kyles Trucking '68 Camaro) 0.477 15.458 52.37
Another broken car, Vick coasting through. Stott earns low ET of the day
and lane choice in the semifinals against Hood.

(L) Ed Hoover (Trussel Constr. '63 Corvette) 0.077(R) 8.455 101.55
Hoover left way too early. Stott had a nitrous explosion and there were
flames in the cockpit with the driver, but he was able to get the flames out. He
is out of the car and is okay. The report just came out that he had a fuel line
come loose and that is what was fueling the fire.
(W) Quain Stott (Lee Boy Paving '63 Corvette) 0.463 6.344 223.25
(L) Ronnie Hood (Fulwylie M'Sports '63 Corvette)0.441 6.430 213.13
Hood was out of the gate first, but Stott had the power to chase him down to
take a 20 feet win stripe. Quain will have his lane choice over his brother Mitch
in the final.
