Results for Qualifying 1
STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Sunoco Pro
Stock at the 19th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Chuck Demory Runs 8.424/114.51, Now #1
Right Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 12.371/69.76, Now #2
12:22 PM Haas is running a brand-new Mustang and had new car blues on the
launch.
Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 9.259/97.26, Now #3
Right Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.835/202.97, Now #1
Holbrook's recycled Top Sportsman Mustang looks antiquated by comparison
with the '99 and '00 models. He launched, had problems, and slowed around half
track. Nice pass for Paone, clean and straight.
Left Lane: Mark Hay Runs 6.787/205.47, Now #1
Right Lane: Robert Killian Runs 7.174/151.82, Now #3
Killian's Probe went out toward the wall on the launch and then recovered to
near the centerline, the chutes out before he crossed the finish line. Nice pass
by Hay to take the pole - for now anyway.
Left Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.837/204.26, Now #4
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.783/206.28, Now #1
Spiess was a bit loose in the lane, the car to the left and right of the
groove, but it didn't hurt his ET very much.
Left Lane: Jon Yoak No Time, Now #10
Right Lane: Fred Brown Runs 6.798/206.56, Now #3
Yoak failed to stage quickly enough and got a no-time. Clean pass by
Brown.
Left Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 13.256/63.25, Now #11
Right Lane: Tom Lee Runs 6.736/206.75, Now #1
Alesci's car made a hard move toward the guard rail on the launch and he
shut it down. Nice pass by Lee to move the Mustang to the top of the order.
Left Lane: Carl Baker Runs 12.390/69.07, Now #12
Right Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 7.474/166.05, Now #8
Another car makes a move toward the guard rail in the left lane.
Left Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.770/205.76, Now #2
Right Lane: Tim Bell Runs 6.909/202.11, Now #8
Rice puts his Firebird in the #2 slot with a nice run.
Left Lane: Bob Holzer Runs 7.510/139.51, Now #12
Right Lane: Floyd Cheek Runs 6.764/208.23, Now #2
Holzer's car got out of shape around the 1,000-foot marker and he backed off
the throttle. Nice pass by Cheek, right down the groove.
Left Lane: David Jenkins Runs 6.905/203.71, Now #10
Right Lane: Jerry Yeoman Runs 6.724/208.33, Now #1
Wow! Yeoman runs low ET and top speed so far to take over the top
spot.
Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.777/207.32, Now #6
Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.747/207.23, Now #3
Two good runs, side by side. The bump spot is Bob Holzer's 7.510.
Left Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 12.459/95.29, Now #22
Right Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.794/206.46, Now #9
Montecalvo's car chattered the tires on the launch and he shut it off.
Collins' car got out of the groove and very sideways at half track and he didn't
lift! Amazing result for an apparently busted run.

Results for Qualifying 2
STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Sunoco Pro
Stock at the 19th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior
elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jason Collins Runs 6.885/200.84, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.794/206.46, Was #9
Right Lane: John Montecalvo Runs 6.799/204.68, Now #11
Best prior run: 12.459/95.29, Was #20
12:22 PM The bump as we open this second session is John Konigshofer's
7.474. Montecalvo takes care of that and now it's Robert Killian on the bump at
7.174.
Left Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.772/205.66, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.747/207.23, Was #3
Right Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 6.811/205.99, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.777/207.32, Was #6
No changes here...two clean passes.
Left Lane: Jerry Yeoman Runs 6.775/206.09, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.724/208.33, Was #1
Right Lane: David Jenkins Runs 6.817/206.94, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.905/203.71, Was #14
Yeoman fails to improve in the less-favored left lane (there's a dip around
300 feet that upsets the cars) but Jenkins steps up nicely.
Left Lane: Tom Lee Runs 6.767/204.77, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.736/206.75, Was #2
Right Lane: Jon Yoak Runs 6.739/207.70, Now #3
No Prior Run
Yoak failed to stage yesterday, so had no time prior to this run. This
should make up for the indignity of the staging DQ, a pretty run to the #3 spot.
Lee, like most, fell off a couple hundredths in the left lane.
Left Lane: Jerry Haas Runs 6.916/201.74, Now #18
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Bob Holzer Runs 6.819/204.77, Now #14
Best prior run: 7.510/139.51, Was #19
Haas had launch problems with the brand new Mustang yesterday. Today he got
a full pass, but Holzer bumped in and left Haas on the outside. Now the bump is
Ed Machacek's 6.837.
Left Lane: Wally Stroupe Runs 6.891/203.66, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.798/206.56, Was #11
Right Lane: Chuck Demory Runs 6.833/204.03, Now #15
Best prior run: 8.424/114.51, Was #21
Another bump, Demory in on a good run while Stroupe was taking a very
devious route to the finish line. Now the bump is Anthony Paone's 6.835.
Left Lane: Tim Bell Runs 7.628/189.27, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.909/202.11, Was #18
Right Lane: Mark Hay Runs 6.879/204.35, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.787/205.47, Was #9
Bell's car bogged on the launch, spitting and sputtering.
Left Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 8.085/118.67, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.783/206.28, Was #8
Right Lane: Dwayne Rice Runs 6.792/205.43, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.770/205.76, Was #6
Spiess got out of shape on the left-lane bump and shut it down.
Left Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 6.893/205.85, Now #18
Best prior run: 7.474/166.05, Was #21
Right Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 6.904/204.63, Now #19
Best prior run: 13.256/63.25, Was #23
Looked like Konigshofer rolled the beams on an otherwise good run.
Left Lane: Anthony Paone Runs 6.888/201.25, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.835/202.97, Was #16
Right Lane: Carl Baker Runs 6.808/206.46, Now #13
Best prior run: 12.390/69.07, Was #23
No tire shake for Baker this time around and he bumps the car in the other
lane. Now the bump spot is Chuck Demory's 6.833.
Left Lane: Floyd Cheek Runs 6.844/204.77, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.764/208.23, Was #5
Right Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 7.389/181.41, Now #24
No Prior Run
Holbrook launched and the car nosed over, then came back to life.
Left Lane: Robert Killian Runs 6.869/203.75, Now #19
Best prior run: 7.174/151.82, Was #23
Right Lane: Ed Machacek Runs 6.858/205.10, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.837/204.26, Was #18
Machacek spun the tires hard on the launch. Killian's car made a hard move
in the middle of the run, off the "launching ramp."

Left Lane: Chris Holbrook Runs 6.871/203.94, Now #20
Best prior run: 7.389/181.41, Was #24
Right Lane: Floyd Cheek Runs 6.789/206.51, Now #5

Best prior run: 6.770/205.76, Was #7
Right Lane: Steve Spiess Runs 6.820/204.68, Now #9

runs.
Left Lane: Gene Wilson Runs 7.104/172.67, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.777/207.32, Was #8
Right Lane: Tom Lee Runs 6.732/206.37, Now #2

Right Lane: Ron Miller Runs 6.760/206.37, Now #4

Demory was bumped moments ago and lost his last chance when his car sprung
(sprang?) a leak as he prepared to stage. He was signaled to shut it off.
Left Lane: Jon Yoak Runs 6.775/207.56, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.739/207.70, Was #3
Right Lane: John Konigshofer Runs 6.777/206.18, Now #9

Bob Holzer with a 6.819.
Left Lane: Angelo Alesci Runs 7.777/125.85, Now #22
Best prior run: 6.904/204.63, Was #22
Right Lane: Jerry Yeoman Runs 6.741/207.61, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.724/208.33, Was #1
Alesci slows on the top end and fails to qualify. Yeoman comes close to his
#1 qualifying time, but doesn't improve it.
Left Lane: Bob Holzer Runs 6.842/204.82, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.819/204.77, Was #16
Right Lane: Jason Collins No Time, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.794/206.46, Was #12
Collins' Probe stalled on the burnout and lost his last chance to move up
the ladder, but at least he's in the field. Holzer also fails to improve and
remains on the bubble. 7:04 PM We are on hold, it's raining again.
7:20 PM The weather radar looks pretty bad - with severe weather about an hour
away, more or less. The five Pro Stock cars still in the lanes will get a final
qualifying pass tomorrow morning. The ET, Modified Eliminator, and Quick Rod
first round runs not completed today will be run starting at 8:00 AM Sunday. We
are through for the day.Saturday,

Best prior run: 6.798/206.56, Was #13
11:39 AM August 19, 2000 - the final two pairs make their final qualifying
runs - and the first two do not improve, Stroupe shaking hard on
the launch and Hay all over the lane at half track.
Left Lane: John Montecalvo No Time, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.799/204.68, Was #14
Montecalvo's car turned hard right on the launch and crossed the
centerline - no improvement.
Left Lane: David Jenkins Runs 8.211/114.06, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.817/206.94, Was #15
All four were already in the field, but so far three of the four failed to
improve. Make that four for four, Jenkins' car heading for the
guard rail at the 330-foot marker, forcing him to give it up.
