Results for Qualifying 1

STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the 19th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 7.687/130.32, Now #1
Right Lane: Kevin O'Dell No Time, Now #2
1:59 PM We open with two of the blown cars. O'Dell's rear tires chattered hard on the launch and he tried to drive through it. The car shook so hard that the right-hand door came open and the car fishtailed violently, then turned hard left and crossed the centerline. He managed to get the front end pulled back to the right, but the car body-slammed the left-hand guard rail hard right at half track, pushing the guard rail back a foot or so. He continued through the left-hand finish line lights, but the car is definitely going to need some repairs before he will be able to run again. We'll be down a few minutes to repair the guard rail damage.
Left Lane: Pat Moore Runs 6.551/202.88, Now #2
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.507/219.99, Now #1
After a few minutes the guard rail was back in place and the dirt was cleaned up, so we were back to racing with this matchup between one of the best blower cars (Hahn) and a nitrous car. Hahn left softly and the Corvette veered left at mid track, Hahn forced to steer hard right to miss the mid-track reflectors, so there's more in that car. Nice pass by Moore.
Left Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 8.056/188.79, Now #5
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 7.926/134.20, Now #4
Another blower versus nitrous match, Critchley with the blower. No decision this round, Critchley shaking the tires hard on the launch and Martin slowing at half track.
Left Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.444/218.28, Now #1
Right Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.545/220.64, Now #3
Pittman ran a couple of divisional events in Top Sportsman with this car trying to get some of the bugs worked out. Nitrous in both lanes. Good drag race, Pittman with a soft launch and Moyer taking over the top spot on a stout opening effort.
Left Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 7.602/119.96, Now #6
Right Lane: David Roemer Runs 6.579/211.16, Now #5
Two more nitrous cars. Roemer's car was all over the top end of the lane. Wasko had a big early lead, then slowed - the reason not obvious.
Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.655/173.24, Now #6
Right Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.719/218.39, Now #7
Two more nitrous cars here. Gahm's car appeared to roll the beams, so the ET was a bit soft compared with the speed.
Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 9.066/93.67, Now #13
Right Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.520/218.18, Now #3
Nitrous for Cossis, blower for Billes. Nice pass by Billes, smooth and straight. Cossis launched and appeared to be on a good run, but was fighting the car on the top end and shut it down with handling problems.
Left Lane: Chip King Runs 7.526/134.73, Now #9
Right Lane: Todd Tutterow Runs 15.183/52.91, Now #15
King's Avenger has a blower, Tutterow runs nitrous. Tutterow shook hard and gave it up. King launched hard, then slowed at half track for some reason.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.398/219.67, Now #1
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 8.756/103.71, Now #15
Stott continues his domination since the rules change on an arrow-straight run. Vick's car was headed right at the 660-foot reflector in he had to lift to get the car steered away from the middle.
Left Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.451/216.29, Now #3
Right Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.550/217.86, Now #7
Two more nitrous cars here. Two good runs, Mitch Stott's car a bit loose on the top end of the run.
Left Lane: Billy Harper Runs 6.678/212.61, Now #11
Right Lane: Chuck Nuytten Runs 8.348/121.83, Now #18
Nitrous, a pair. Both had problems, Nuytten's Corvette first over next to the guard rail, forcing him to lift, and then over against the centerline as soon as he got back on it. Harper's run looked good, but he lifted well short of the finish line.
Left Lane: Matt Tolbert Runs 6.923/197.97, Now #14
Right Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.749/219.03, Now #13
Blowers, a pair. Tolbert was supposedly not going to run Pro Modified in the Texas Super Bird any more this year, but apparently he had a change of heart. He ran it through with no histrionics, but Spiering took the crooked route, first out toward the 660-foot marker and then back toward the guard rail.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.561/215.77, Now #9
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.588/213.06, Now #11
Two clean runs here, no excitement.
Left Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.661/213.27, Now #14
Right Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 6.518/222.60, Now #5
Nitrous, a pair. Apparently the "groove" in the right lane veers toward the centerline because Brinsfield also veered left, almost hitting the 660-foot reflector, and he also didn't lift. That's it, Top Fuel is next.

Results for Qualifying 2

STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Mopar Pro Modified at the 19th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 6.589/215.87, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.518/222.60, Was #5
Right Lane: John Bartunek Runs 6.610/205.66, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.661/213.27, Was #14
1:24 PM Brinsfield had problems getting the car to do a burnout. Didn't hurt the run any we could see, the car a bit loose, but quick. Bartunek nipped a few pistons in the lights to step up one rung on the ladder.
Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.556/215.67, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.588/213.06, Was #12
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 6.517/213.11, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.561/215.77, Was #10
Two nice passes here, Castellana's car moving around a bit on the top end.
Left Lane: Carl Spiering Runs 6.636/211.81, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.749/219.03, Was #17
Right Lane: Matt Tolbert Runs 6.659/220.04, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.923/197.97, Was #18
Got an e-mail yesterday informing me I'd missed a press release or two, Tolbert planning to return here all along with the Superbird. The Plymouth fans in the nice crowd here cheered for this run, the big blue car and Spiering both getting into the field, bumping Brian Gahm and Billy Harper.
Left Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.666/209.20, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.507/219.99, Was #4
Right Lane: Troy Critchley Runs 7.044/212.01, Now #19
Best prior run: 8.056/188.79, Was #21
Two of the best of the blown cars square off here and both have problems, Critchley spinning the tires and forced to backpedal to regain traction.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 6.538/216.81, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.550/217.86, Was #9
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.468/216.97, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.655/173.24, Was #15
Nice job of driving by Hoover, his car very loose on the top end.
Left Lane: Todd Tutterow Runs 6.598/212.56, Now #14
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Pat Moore Runs 6.471/217.44, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.551/202.88, Was #11
Tutterow's car was all over the top end of the lane, almost tagging the guard rail. The hood scoop came off the car in the lights, probably a nitrous explosion. That bumps the Superbird, putting Spiering on the bubble at 6.636.
Left Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.470/217.60, Now #5
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.415/228.19, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.398/219.67, Was #1
Two good runs here, a nice side-by-side show for the crowd. That bumps Spiering, putting John Bartunek on the bubble at 6.610.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 6.549/217.81, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.520/218.18, Was #10
Right Lane: Billy Harper Runs 6.494/224.71, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.678/212.61, Was #19
Harper gets in on a good shot, bumping Bartunek. Now it's Tutterow who's sweating on the bubble at 6.598.
Left Lane: David Roemer Runs 6.642/208.91, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.579/211.16, Was #15
Right Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 6.525/215.41, Now #12
No Prior Run
Goodbye Tutterow, now Roemer has to start sweating with his earlier 6.579.
Left Lane: Brian Gahm Runs 6.521/214.79, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.719/218.39, Was #21
Right Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 11.586/74.13, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.444/218.28, Was #2
Gahm makes a nice run to bump Roemer, putting Shannon Jenkins on the bump at 6.556. Moyer shook very hard on the launch and shut it down.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.663/212.46, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.545/220.64, Was #15
Right Lane: Ron Kammes Runs 6.836/210.77, Now #22
Best prior run: 7.687/130.32, Was #23
Two more blower cars, two more busted runs. The blower cars haven't fared too well so far this session.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.570/215.72, Now #17
Best prior run: 7.926/134.20, Was #24
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 6.910/159.71, Now #24
No Prior Run
Martin came ever-so-close, but came up short on a good run, a bit loose on the top end. King's car was all over the lane.
Left Lane: Chuck Nuytten Runs 7.378/196.67, Now #26
Best prior run: 8.348/121.83, Was #26
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 6.462/216.19, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.451/216.29, Was #3
Nice run by Hood, very consistent in both lanes. Nuytten was way out of shape, pedaled, and tried to continue without much success.
Right Lane: Roy Wasko Runs 6.601/210.97, Now #20
No Prior Run
Wasko skirted the centerline for the second half of this run and that probably cost him some ET.

Results for Time Trials

STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from time trials in Mopar Pro Modified at the 19th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, theoretical position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Steve Cossis Runs 7.084/157.26, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.525/215.41, Was #13
Right Lane: Carl Moyer Runs 6.753/165.56, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.444/218.28, Was #2
12:34 PM Still in time trials, so the runs don't count toward qualifying. It's just "what if?" Both cars in this first pair appeared to make planned early shutoffs to avoid engine damage, the runs looking good to where they slowed.
Left Lane: Al Billes Runs 11.061/76.66, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.520/218.18, Was #11
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 7.854/109.15, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.468/216.97, Was #4
They signaled these two to shut off when there was a nitrous explosion at the top end of the track, in the pulloff area off the side of the track. The explosion was under the hood of Carl Moyer's car, the concussion hard enough to knock people in the area off their feet. No injuries, but a frightening incident. Billes encountered severe shake when they were finally allowed to run. Hoover launched, skated around near half track, and shut it down.
Left Lane: Mitch Stott Runs 12.856/65.72, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.538/216.81, Was #14
Right Lane: Fred Hahn Runs 6.406/222.16, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.507/219.99, Was #8
Stott shook and shut off. Hahn launched hard and got everyone's attention with a stunning run, the car very loose in the middle of the run. Wow!
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 8.761/104.63, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.517/213.11, Was #9
Right Lane: Steve Vick Runs 6.492/193.63, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.470/217.60, Was #6
Castellana shook and shut off. Vick made a good run, but something in the engine bay let go early in the run and he trailed a spray of oil all the way down the strip.
Left Lane: Pat Moore Runs 6.995/155.14, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.471/217.44, Was #7
Right Lane: Billy Harper Runs 6.869/141.64, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.494/224.71, Was #8
The oil cleanup was a long one, apparently the result of an oil line coming loose because the engine ran strongly all the way down the strip. Both cars left hard here, Harper spinning the rear tires a bunch on the launch. Then he put the chutes out very early, the car apparently getting a bit loose on the top end. Moore appeared to make a planned shutdown.
Left Lane: Dale Brinsfield Runs 6.479/216.08, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.518/222.60, Was #10
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.349/229.00, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.398/219.67, Was #1
Everyone was watching this one closely, especially Jim Oddy. Stott showed most of his hand here, a great run with a huge speed, too bad it doesn't count because it would be a new speed record, backed up by his 228.19 in qualifying.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 12.780/83.85, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.570/215.72, Was #17
Right Lane: Ronnie Hood Runs 7.086/139.08, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.451/216.29, Was #4
Martin's car bogged on the launch. Hood left hard and would have posted a stout number, but the Corvette started skating around at half track and he had to lift to keep the shiny side up.
Left Lane: Alan Pittman Runs 6.713/218.34, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.545/220.64, Was #15
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 7.577/129.10, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.556/215.67, Was #16
Both cars shook the tires on the launch and both drivers pedaled their way out of it, Jenkins electing to call it quits at half track and Pittman on the throttle to the finish line.

Results for Elimination Round 1

STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Mopar Pro Modified at the 19th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals:

W/L Driver RT ET Speed

(W) Mike Castellana (Western Beef '57 Bel Air) 0.431 6.483 214.79
(L) Fred Hahn (Summit Racing '54 Corvette) 0.524 6.429 221.34
5:13 PM This morning Hahn joked that "the weather gods gave back the tenth that the rules gods took away." But here Castellana took just enough at the green for a holeshot victory, the margin of victory = 0.039 seconds (approximately 13 feet).
(W) Billy Harper ('00 Viper) 0.505 6.429 226.18
(L) Dale Brinsfield (Brinsfield Imports '67 Cama 0.491 6.508 215.62
Good drag race, Harper by a margin of victory = 0.065 seconds (approximately 21 feet) with a huge speed, just short of the national record.
(W) Al Billes (Quaker State '53 Studebaker) 0.681 6.478 220.80
(L) Pat Moore (Ed Steffey '57 Bel Air) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Moore's car wouldn't stage, rolling right through the beams.
(W) Steve Vick (Kyles Trucking '68 Camaro) 0.455 6.423 224.83
(L) Steve Cossis (Psychosis '53 Corvette) 0.952 6.490 214.89
Vick nailed Cossis to the tree and then ran away from him on the other end.
(W) Mitch Stott (Radiac Abrasives '63 Corvette) 0.406 6.414 206.89
(L) Ed Hoover (Trussel Constr. '63 Corvette) 0.143(R) 8.444 102.68
Hoover rolled the beams, way early. Stott's car was smoking on the top end, but no oil so it may not have been anything serious. Stott has lane choice against Vick next round.
(W) Alan Pittman (Westbrook M'Sports '41 Willys)0.606 6.500 216.86
(L) Ronnie Hood (Fulwylie M'Sports '63 Corvette)0.469 6.804 177.16
Hood nailed Pittman to the starting line, but then Hood's Corvette got out of shape and he finally had to lift to stay off the wall. Pittman advances, but loses lane choice to Billes next round in an all-blower matchup.
(W) Shannon Jenkins ('00 Viper) 0.463 6.456 218.87
(L) Carl Moyer (Karl Chevrolet '57 Bel Air) 0.468 6.507 220.42
Moyer's crew rebuilt the damaged bodywork after his explosion this morning, but it wasn't enough to hold off Jenkins' top end charge. Jenkins advances, but loses lane choice to Harper in round two.
(W) Quain Stott (Lee Boy Paving '63 Corvette) 0.503 6.383 229.65
(L) Harold Martin (AC Delco '00 Firebird) 0.323(R) 12.078 69.90

(W) Quain Stott (Lee Boy Paving '63 Corvette) 0.498 6.378 229.70

(L) Alan Pittman (Westbrook M'Sports '41 Willys)0.496 10.091 78.61
There will be a blower car in the semifinals - and it will be Billes. Pittman's car got out of shape, started fishtailing violently, then started spewing dense smoke at half track.
(W) Billy Harper ('00 Viper) 0.516 6.598 221.83
(L) Shannon Jenkins ('00 Viper) 0.267(R) 9.118 94.86
And there will be a Viper in the semifinals, the teammates squaring off here. "The Iceman" melted here, very early at the tree, and Harper fought an ill-handling car to get to the semifinals, losing lane choice to Billes.
