STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Screamin' Eagle Nitro Harley at the 19th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, rider name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Jay Turner Runs 8.327/107.92, Now #1
Right Lane: Allen Peterson Runs 8.648/150.50, Now #2
12:38 PM Turner apparently had the wheelie bar set wrong because the front wheel was way up there and he had to back off to get it down. Peterson's engine went sour on the launch.
Left Lane: Runs 7.118/199.95, Now #1
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 7.890/202.47, Now #2
Don't yet have the tech data on the rider in the left lane, but he's from the Netherlands and this is his first outing in this division. He goes to the provisional pole position on a straight, clean run. Vancil's bike balked on the launch and he managed to get it to run after a bit of struggling.
Left Lane: Mike Romine Runs 7.302/173.67, Now #2
Right Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 8.354/110.30, Now #5
Mancuso left softly but had to abandon the run at half track. Clean, full pass for Romine.
Left Lane: Bill Furr Runs 6.656/213.92, Now #1
Right Lane: Jim McClure Runs 6.733/211.41, Now #2
After watching the first four pairs struggle, we finally get two nice runs, side by side.
Left Lane: Jack Romine Runs 12.813/75.18, Now #10
Right Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.625/204.91, Now #1
Stordeur's bike backfired a couple times on this run, so the elapsed time was amazing. Romine smoked the tire on the launch.
Left Lane: Ray Price Runs 14.025/157.12, Now #12
Right Lane: Mark Conner Runs 7.478/179.92, Now #6
Price's engine balked and almost stalled on the launch. Conner left hard, but had to back off at mid track for some reason.

12:39 PM Verheijen hit the finish line reflectors, DQ'ing his run - and Mancuso's run may not count either. The Dutchman was on a straight line toward the finish line line marker from the launce. He leaned way to the right and the bike just wouldn't come back away from the line. Mancuso was also over near the centerline, but didn't appear to hit anything.

McClure was on a very good run until the top end, where he slowed, allowing Furr to go by.
Left Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 10.068/110.85, Now #1

Right Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.855/188.32, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.302/173.67, Was #6
Stordeur's bike was smoking the rear tire and he shut it down. Romine was battling with the bike all the way down the track, salvaging a good ET.
Left Lane: Allen Peterson No Time, Now #10

Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.685/209.25, Now #3
Best prior run: 8.327/107.92, Was #9
Turner's problem yesterday was not the wheelie bar, it was the bump in the left lane - he calls it a "launching ramp" - and said he felt like Evil Knievel when his bike launched off the bump, the rear wheel leaving the track. When the engine unloaded, the fuel system shut it down. Here he made a run more like we expect from "Team Bulldog," the wheel in the air (but not uncontrollably) way down the strip. Peterson broke on the launch, slowly coasting down the strip.

The bump spot these two were trying to better was Mark Conner's 7.478, so both were more than capable of beating it. Both did so handily, Price overcoming the new bike blues that have been dogging him and Vancil also getting in, making it an all-six field. That bumped both Conner and Verheijen.

Two tried, two came up short, both engines struggling.

Results for Time Trials

11:54 AM Team bikes and they were side-by-side to 330 feet, but then Mancuso fell back and slowed while Stordeur screamed down the strip, bettering his #1 qualifying run by a tenth of a second a running the fastest speed ever. Awesome!!! Remember, it's only time trials and doesn't count toward records, but it's fun to watch.

Nice pass by Turner, but after Stordeur's rocket shot it's anti-climatic.

A pair of good runs, Furr fighting for control while Price was smoothly down the groove.

Jim McClure is in the field but didn't show up for a time trial run. Don't know yet if he's here or not. Romine made a good start, but there was a puff of smoke from the bike just past half track and he slowed on the top end.

4:45 PM Stordeur got up on the wheelie bar with the rear slick smoking and had to back off. But then Vancil also got into trouble with traction and also had to back off, allowing Stordeur to close the gap. In the end, Vancil got to the finish line to win by a Margin of victory = 0.310 seconds (approximately 91 feet) in a "pedaling contest."

McClure spun the rear tire about 100 feet out and Mancuso pulled away to win easily on a solid pass. He will have lane choice against Vancil in round two.

Furr made a clean pass while Romine was struggling to keep his bike going straight.

This was a very quiet win for Price, Turner's engine going silent about 100 feet out and Price's engine also going silent around half track. Price advances but loses lane choice to Furr in the semifinals.

7:03 PM Vancil lost traction in the less-favored left lane and Mancuso cruised to an easy win with an off-pace run.

(L) Ray Price (Ray Price H-D '00 Harley)   0.599 6.575 207.18
Unlike the first pair, both bikes made good runs here, Furr winning on a holeshot and earning lane choice against Mancuso in the final round. Margin of victory = 0.041 seconds (approximately 12 feet).

10:57 PM Furr looked like he was out of this one at half track, but then Furr recovered and Mancuso ran into problems, slowing dramatically, his bike near the centerline. In his first final this year Furr takes home the trophy.
