Results for Qualifying 1
STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in ihra.com Funny
Car at the 19th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Runs 6.706/184.72, Now #2
Right Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.191/230.53, Now #1
12:49 PM The driver in the left lane may be Conrad Dahl. The car went
straight, but was sluggish. Clean pass for Dobbs.
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.904/241.35, Now #1
Right Lane: Steve Ruda Runs 6.064/229.82, Now #2
Nice pass by Rector - by comparison Ruda's "okay" pass looked very slow, but
that run should put him in the show.
Left Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.079/233.64, Now #3
Right Lane: Jim Lape Runs 7.359/138.86, Now #6
Lape's car made a weak burnout, but made a hard launch, the front end way up
in the air, the car headed for the wall. Lape had to shut it down to regain
control. Meanwhile, Butler also fought his car all the way down the lane,
managing to keep it under control well enough for a good result.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.013/231.30, Now #3
Right Lane: Dale Brand Runs 5.950/237.09, Now #2
Two good runs here, a nice side-by-side race, Brand getting the win light
and the #2 spot on the early ladder.
Left Lane: Mike Preslar Runs 6.056/230.35, Now #4
Right Lane: Gary Rettell Runs 6.138/225.22, Now #7
Preslar made a huge, match-race burnout and backed that up with a stout
launch and a solid run. Rettell made a clean pass, but needs to pick the pace up
a bit to be competitive.
Left Lane: Santo Volpe Runs 6.134/232.13, Now #8
Right Lane: Herb Rodgers Runs 6.046/232.91, Now #4
What a contrast here, a sleek Mustang paired off with the boxy '56 Crown
Victoria. But aerodynamics had little to do with the outcome, Volpe's Crown Vic
shaking the tires hard on the launch and scrubbing off a lot of ET.
Left Lane: Von Smith Runs 13.414/57.36, Now #14
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 7.102/186.14, Now #12
Huge tire shake in both lanes here, McMillen's Avenger leaping into the air
on the launch and Smith shaking so hard that he had to shut it down. McMillen got
out of the throttle until the car settled back down, then got back on the throttle
and ran it through.
Left Lane: Chris Hunt Runs 6.046/232.13, Now #5
Right Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.119/231.95, Now #9
Munroe had the front wheels up and was headed for the 330-foot reflector and
may have had to pedal it to regain control. Nice pass by Hunt, clean and
straight.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 6.029/233.94, Now #5
Right Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 5.984/238.15, Now #3
Gibson's car skated over toward the 330-foot marker but he didn't lift and
the result show it, two more good runs. The bump is McMillen's 7.102, but should
be in the sixes after the next pair.
Left Lane: Scott Weney Runs 6.585/227.50, Now #15
Right Lane: Adam Szeler Runs 7.064/221.94, Now #17
Points-leader Weney is running a new '01 Corvette, having launched his '00
body in New York, damaging it beyond repair. Szeler spun the tires hard on the
launch and Weney chattered the tires - both teams disappointed with the
result.
Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 6.513/226.13, Now #15
Right Lane: Dan Crownhart Runs 6.775/204.82, Now #18
Tire shake in both lanes, Tigges recovering a bit sooner than Crownhart and
then skating all over his lane enroute to the finish line.
Left Lane: Mark Poyser Runs 6.065/228.54, Now #10
Right Lane: Joe Comella Runs 6.553/189.71, Now #17
Poyser bumps points leader Weney on a solid run. Comella joined the ranks
of those experiencing severe tire shake on the launch. He short-shifted and
continued, but came up short of the ne bump time - Fred Tigges' 6.513.
Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 11.055/76.41, Now #25
Right Lane: Carl Femerelle Runs 7.436/180.72, Now #24
Bogolo had the front wheels in the air and the rear tires shaking hard, the
car heading for the guard rail before he managed to tame it down. Femerelle also
had problems with shake, just not as dramatic.
Left Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.133/230.41, Now #13
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 9.615/106.87, Now #26
Same deal for Athey, except that his car was headed for the centerline. He
got it tamed down and continued, but something in the rear end shook loose and he
left a trail of rear-end oil from the 60-foot marker on. Noakes made a clean,
shake-free pass - at least it appeared that way from back here.
Right Lane: James Spencer No Time, Now #29
After sitting in the staging lanes waiting for the oil cleanup - and it was
a long wait because rear-end grease is tough to clean up - the final car of the
round fired, made his burnout, stopped, and stalled on the track.

Results for Qualifying 2
STANTON, Mich. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in ihra.com Funny
Car at the 19th annual CARQUEST Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior
elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jim Lape Runs 6.116/231.66, Now #13
Best prior run: 7.359/138.86, Was #22
Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 5.989/237.21, Now #4
No Prior Run
12:53 PM The bump as we open the session is Fred Tigges' 6.513, but not for
long, both cars coming through with solid passes to bump both Tigges and Gary
Rettell. Now the bump is Santo Volpe's 6.134.
Left Lane: Steve Ruda Runs 6.196/208.09, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.064/229.82, Was #10
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.268/224.83, Now #18
No Prior Run
No help here, both making pretty good passes, but not good enough.
Left Lane: Gary Rettell Runs 6.422/217.39, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.138/225.22, Was #17
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.038/232.73, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.013/231.30, Was #5
Outstanding job of driving by Atchison, the car diving to the left on the
launch and Atchison smoothly steering it back to the groove.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.068/228.07, Now #12
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Conrad Dahl Runs 6.181/226.07, Now #19
Best prior run: 6.706/184.72, Was #22
Dobbs' car is painted that lovely red rust shade of primer, not a "Best
Appearing" candidate. But it runs good! NIce pass by Dobbs to get in this tough
field, bumping Volpe, putting Paul Noakes on the bump at 6.133. Dahl made a good
run, but once again, "not good enough."
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.106/232.01, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.950/237.09, Was #2
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 7.994/131.21, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.029/233.94, Was #6
Thomas lined up way to the right of the groove and his burnout strips - and
then chattered the tires hard on the launch.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.658/222.22, Now #24
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Santo Volpe Runs 6.728/206.28, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.134/232.13, Was #17
Both cars launched into severe tire shake, McMillen almost tagging the wall
and then almost crossing the centerline.
Left Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.016/232.35, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.119/231.95, Was #15
Right Lane: Wayne Butler Runs 6.088/233.34, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.079/233.64, Was #13
Two wild rides, both cars very loose and both drivers salvaging their runs
anyway. Butler's car headed for the centerline and when he steered it back the
car got over next to the wall - so close that he delayed pulling the chutes at the
finish line. Nice pass by Munroe to move way up the ladder.
Left Lane: Herb Rodgers Runs 6.264/209.20, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.046/232.91, Was #8
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 11.926/73.91, Now #21
Best prior run: 6.513/226.13, Was #21
Tigges shook hard and Rodgers was playing with the throttle, on and off on
the top end, so neither driver will be happy.
Left Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 6.144/234.19, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.984/238.15, Was #3
Right Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.251/229.24, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.133/230.41, Was #16
Gibson's car was all over the middle of the lane. Noakes spun the tires
hard on the launch.
Left Lane: James Spencer Runs 6.449/210.92, Now #21
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 11.821/69.93, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.904/241.35, Was #1
Rector shook very hard and called it quits. Spencer's car was way down on
power, struggling to the other end.
Left Lane: Joe Comella Runs 8.429/117.98, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.553/189.71, Was #23
Right Lane: Chris Hunt Runs 6.114/230.00, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.046/232.13, Was #9
Comella's car was spinning the tires and skating all over early in the run,
so he pulled the plug. Hunt's car spun the tires hard on the launch, a common
problem in the right lane.
Left Lane: Adam Szeler Runs 6.031/229.82, Now #8
Best prior run: 7.064/221.94, Was #27
Right Lane: Mark Poyser Runs 6.194/225.11, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.065/228.54, Was #12
Szeler bumps Noakes with a nice pass down the left lane. Poyser got a good
launch, one of the best we've seen in the right lane, but appeared down on power
on the top end.
Left Lane: Dan Crownhart Runs 6.410/215.82, Now #23
Best prior run: 6.775/204.82, Was #27
Right Lane: Scott Weney Runs 5.967/235.47, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.585/227.50, Was #25
The bump was Jim Lape's 6.116. Weney didn't even pause in the sixes here, a
great launch and a great run to make this the quickest field in IHRA history, the
bump now Wayne Butler's 6.079.
Left Lane: Carl Fumerelle Runs 6.897/182.33, Now #28
Best prior run: 7.436/180.72, Was #28
Fumerelle made his second run in a new car, still "basic black." The car
rolled the beams, then he pedaled it at least once and gave it up early.

Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 6.387/187.69, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.989/237.21, Was #5
Both cars missed the setup here, shaking on the launch. Atchison threw in
the towel early. Smith drove through the shake, got sideways at half track,
pedaled, got loose again, and finally called it quits.
Left Lane: Scott Weney Runs 5.931/239.04, Now #3

Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 13.620/62.64, Now #8

Right Lane: Billy Gibson Runs 7.316/133.78, Now #4

Poyser's car was on the verge of severe tire shake through first gear, but
the rear tires were only chattering up and down an inch or so. Gibson's run
looked good, but something let go around half track - and we have oil from half
track on.

saved it and stayed on the throttle, but the throttle hung in the shutdown area
and Rector made the turn on two wheels. Exciting stuff, even from this end of the
