EPPING, N.H. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in ihra.com Funny
Car at the 5th annual Amalie Oil Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Dan Roman Runs 8.901/125.74, Now #2
Right Lane: Jim Lape Runs 5.761/243.77, Now #1 12:42 PM Lape's run didn't look that good, loose in the first part of the
run. Both ends are well under the current World records.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.274/222.14, Now #3
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 6.032/239.87, Now #2 Rector shook the tires very hard, killing his ET. He still ran a huge
speed.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.412/221.60, Now #5
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.049/232.19, Now #3 Good pass by Ray, one that should keep him in the field through
qualifying.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.080/232.71, Now #5
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.014/234.82, Now #2 Still nothing even close to Lape's outrageous numbers...
Left Lane: Von Smith Runs 5.909/239.06, Now #2
Right Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 5.950/238.01, Now #3 Two great results on two very ungreat runs, both cars trying very hard to
get out of shape - Smith having to make a major steering adjustment at half track,
yanking the car back into the groove. Thomas' chute didn't open and he went off
the end, into the big sandbox.
Lape's run looks valid on the basis of
incremental times, by the way, with a 195 mph speed at the eighth mile and a 4.84
elapsed time at 1,000 feet. He ran the final 320 feet in 0.92 seconds - Smith in
0.93 and Thomas in 0.95. Now, if he can just pass fuel and tech...
Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 6.094/238.60, Now #8
Right Lane: Bruce Peterson Jr Runs 6.214/226.54, Now #9 Two more clean runs...
Left Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 14.430/32.64, Now #14
Right Lane: George McNeil Runs 6.038/226.85, Now #6 Looks like Tigges left a little something in the left lane shutdown area,
the PTS crew putting down oil dry and cleaning it up.
Munroe shook so hard
that the flames almost fell off his hood. Nice pass by McNeil, clean and
straight.
Left Lane: Adam Szeler Runs 6.054/232.47, Now #8
Right Lane: David Rowe Runs 9.918/77.70, Now #15 Nice, clean run for Szeler, tire shake for Rowe.
Right Lane: Scott Weney Runs 5.874/238.13, Now #2 Nice pass by Weney to close the session, not as quick or fast as Lape, but a
good opening round effort.

EPPING, N.H. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 2 qualifying in ihra.com Funny
Car at the 5th annual Amalie Oil Northern Nationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior
elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jim Lape Runs 5.884/240.77, Now #1
Best prior run: 5.761/243.77, Was #1
Right Lane: Dan Roman Runs 12.346/65.72, Now #15
Best prior run: 8.901/125.74, Was #15
12:50 PM Lape is running a Littlefield Blower, which could be where Lape
stepped up his performance. He comes up short of
the backups needed for his earlier run as World records, but he's still quick and
fast enough to make believers out of everyone. Roman smoked the tires and gave it
up.
Left Lane: Bruce Peterson JrRuns 6.202/222.66, Now #13
Best prior run: 6.214/226.54, Was #12
Right Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.059/229.43, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.274/222.14, Was #13
Two good runs, straight and clean.
Left Lane: David Rowe Runs 6.168/226.05, Now #13
No Prior Run
Right Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 5.947/237.75, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.094/238.60, Was #12
Tigges looked like he was in trouble, with several puffs of smoke from his
headers as he went down the track, but the numbers that came up had his team
dancing on the starting line, a very nice run for the Holbrook, Mass. driver.
Rowe was quick enough to move into the field, but with seventeen cars here and a
sixteen-car field, somebody will get to watch Sunday.
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector No Time, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.032/239.87, Was #7
Right Lane: Terry McMillen No Time, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.412/221.60, Was #15
These two made their burnouts, then were signaled to shut it off, oil
discovered in the shutdown area. They will go back, cool down, and try again
later.
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 6.023/237.30, Now #5
Best prior run: 5.950/238.01, Was #5
Right Lane: Von Smith Runs 5.907/239.02, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.909/239.06, Was #3
Good side-by-side runs, Thomas with lots of tire spin on the launch.
Left Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.075/232.39, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.049/232.19, Was #9
Right Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.102/228.96, Now #13
No Prior Run
Munroe shook very hard yesterday, so hard he abandoned the run. Today the
car left cleanly and he bumped Roman from the field.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison No Time, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.014/234.82, Was #6
Right Lane: Paul Athey No Time, Now #12
Best prior run: 6.080/232.71, Was #12
Same deal, oil discovered after these two fired and made their burnouts.
The oil is way down the track, almost to the turnoff. They will get a chance to
cool the engines and try again a bit later.
Left Lane: Scott Weney Runs 16.579/44.18, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.874/238.13, Was #2
Right Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.393/178.38, Now #16
No Prior Run
Two more..and a strange pair of runs. Weney's car shook and shuddered,
skating all over the lane until he shut it down. Bogolo's run looked normal for
about 300 feet, then one of his two chutes came out and he towed it the rest of
the way down the track.
Left Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 7.324/120.54, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.032/239.87, Was #7
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.347/224.51, Now #16
Best prior run: 6.412/221.60, Was #17
These two were shut off earlier for an oildown, so came back after Top Fuel
top make their second qualifying run. Rector had problems at half track and shut
it down, but McMillen squeaked into the field, on the bubble, bumping Bogolo.
Left Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 9.658/88.32, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.014/234.82, Was #6
Right Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.014/234.21, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.080/232.71, Was #12
Atchison's engine went suddenly silent at 330 feet or so, possibly breaking
something. Athey ran it all the way through, a nice pass, to move into the top
half of the field.

Right Lane: Bruce Peterson JrRuns 6.174/225.26, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.202/222.66, Was #15
Peterson was all over the lane, but dodged the timing reflectors and
improved his ET a bit. Roman came up short, his car running out of steam on the
top end.
Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.147/209.10, Now #14
Best prior run: 6.347/224.51, Was #17
Right Lane: David Rowe Runs 6.215/227.04, Now #15
Best prior run: 6.168/226.05, Was #14
McMillen returns the favor, getting back in the field, bumping Peterson.
There will be no more bumping since all those outside the field have already made
their final qualifying pass.
Left Lane: Von Smith Runs 5.967/235.89, Now #3
Best prior run: 5.907/239.02, Was #3
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.036/231.91, Now #9
Best prior run: 6.049/232.19, Was #10
Smith inadvertently deep-staged, hurting his ET a few hundredths. Ray
stepped up a bit, but not enough to get lane choice Sunday.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.308/196.99, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.014/234.21, Was #7
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.872/240.85, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.032/239.87, Was #8
Athey made a huge burnout, a group of casino "high rollers" here for the
show. Then he was late getting back and had to go right in and stage to keep from
delaying Rector. Athey was on a good run, but there was a flash of flame from
under the car around 1,000 feet and he coasted across the finish line. No short
fuse for Rector, a nice pass to move up right behind Lape on the ladder.
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 7.282/125.25, Now #7
Best prior run: 6.014/234.82, Was #7
Atchison's car took dead aim on the half-track reflectors and he gave it up
to save the car for tomorrow.

Results for Elimination Rnd 1
EPPING, N.H. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in ihra.com
Funny Car at the 5th annual Amalie Oil Northern Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) George McNeil (Cutlass) 2.059 14.199 54.66
(L) Rob Atchison ('97 Firebird) 0.000(R) (Broke)
12:32 PM Atchison's car gave off a loud POP when he tried to do the burnout
and his crew signaled him to shut it off, the burst panel in the supercharger open.
That was a very bad break because McNeil launched into violent shake, the car
dancing and the roof hatch flapping, so he shut it down.
(W) Larry Dobbs ('00 Corvette) 0.558 6.209 224.17
(L) Fred Tigges (Camaro) 0.525 10.067 84.42
More shake, this time by Tigges, and Dobbs goes to the next round in his
primer-red Corvette. Two pairs, two upsets.
(W) Tony Bogolo (Avenger) 0.402 6.058 235.06
(L) Von Smith ('00 Firebird) 0.591 6.367 176.70
Bogolo was in as first alternate, for Terry Munroe, and made it
three-for-three in the upset column, Smith dead late and then shaking and dancing
all over the lane. Bogolo advances with lane choice against Dobbs in round
two.
(W) Jim Lape (Camaro) 0.520 5.896 235.60
(L) Bruce Peterson Jr (Avenger) 0.000(R) (Broke)
No upset here, though Peterson will probably be upset about breaking on the
burnout, his car sitting over next to the wall while Lape made his run.
(W) Jimmy Rector ('99 Avenger) 0.465 5.868 242.80
(L) David Rowe (Cutlass) 0.453 7.042 165.92
Rowe launched into shake, pedaled, shook, pedaled again, then got it hooked
up. By then Rector was at half track and disappearing fast, resetting the IHRA
World speed record on this run. Rector has lane choice against McNeil in round
two.
(W) Scott Weney ('01 Corvette) 0.500 5.967 234.86
(L) Terry McMillen (Avenger) 0.477 11.147 83.05
Both cars shook on the launch, but Weney drove through it while McMillen had
to pedal and eventually threw in the towel.
(W) Mark Thomas ('00 Avenger) 0.498 6.365 225.67
(L) Adam Szeler (Mad Mechanic '96 Achieva) 0.641 19.759 No Speed
Szeler did a monster burnout, but even that amount of tire heat couldn't avoid
the shakes, so violent his car broke, the engine going silent. He coasted through
so slowly his speed didn't even record. Thomas had shake problems of his own but
was able to backpedal out of it, but he lost lane choice to Weney in round two.
(W) Dave Ray (Cutlass) 0.456 6.053 232.03
(L) Paul Athey (Corvette) 0.473 6.137 231.64
Final pair, the closest matchup of the round (on paper anyway). Athey was all
over the lane, his car skating around and almost taking out the 1,000-foot marker -
but he never lifted. Ray won by a margin of victory = 0.101 seconds (approximately
34 feet), but lost lane choice to Lape in round two.

(L) Tony Bogolo (Avenger) 0.520 (Broke)2:21 PM Bogolo's tiptoe through the tulips came to a shaky end, his car
launching into violent shake, then coasting to a stop before the finish line.
(W) Jimmy Rector ('99 Avenger) 0.493 6.343 199.43
(L) George McNeil (Cutlass) 0.456 13.136 57.30This was an expensive win for Rector, both cars launching into shake, then
pedaling. Rector's car hooked up and veered left, almost crossing the centerline at
the half-track markers, then veering back to the right, finally hitting the
right-hand wall beyond the finish line, sending dust and dirt and fiberglass pieces
sailing through the air, moving the Jersey barriers back a few feet. There was no
foul, so the win stands. But the car is damaged too badly to repair for next round,
so the winner of the Weney-Thomas matchup will get a "break-single" to the final
round.
(W) Scott Weney ('01 Corvette) 0.519 5.984 234.86
(L) Mark Thomas ('00 Avenger) 0.475 13.207 61.85Both cars shook on the launch, but Weney drove through it while Thomas pedaled
and had to give it up. Weney advances and will have a free pass to the finals,
Rector unable to return next round.
(W) Dave Ray (Cutlass) 1.216 13.990 86.01
(L) Jim Lape (Camaro) 0.000(R) (Broke) Lape was a no-show, so Ray takes it easy on the "pieces-parts" and cedes lane
choice to Dobbs in the semifinals.
