Eagle Nitro Harley at the 12th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals listing lane,

Left Lane: Mike Romine Runs 7.518/186.37, Now #1
Right Lane: Ray Price No Time, Now #2
1:20 PM Price broke in the water. Romine spun the tire hard on the launch,
backed off on the throttle, and tried again with more success - good speed, bad
ET.
Left Lane: Jim McClure Runs 8.929/102.81, Now #3
Right Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.761/208.91, Now #1
McClure's engine went sour on the launch and he nursed it through.
Good-looking pass by Mancuso, but a bit off on the clocks.
Left Lane: Bob Spina Runs 7.181/196.85, Now #2
Right Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 9.181/99.50, Now #5
Mattioli smoked the rear slick.
Left Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 14.670/55.24, Now #7
Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.832/207.42, Now #2
Good pass by Turner, but he'll be looking to go a few tenths quicker
tomorrow. Stordeur launched and the bike slowed immediately, problem not apparent
from here.
Left Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 14.156/66.81, Now #8
Right Lane: Allen Peterson Runs 6.900/172.91, Now #3
Vancil's engine let him down immediately, popping and sputtering. Clean
pass by Peterson.
Left Lane: Jack Romine Runs 7.322/155.81, Now #6
Right Lane: Bill Furr Runs 6.776/190.43, Now #2
Nice pass by Furr. Romine was leaning way to the right to stay off the wall
and had to give it up on the top end. That's it, twelve bikes here trying to get
into eight slots on the ladder. Look for several to step way up tomorrow.

12:42 PM Spina's engine sounded ragged on the burnout, but cleaned up on
the launch, the front wheel in the air well down the track. But the show was in
the left lane, Turner carrying the front wheel almost to the finish line on a nice
run.

Team Mancuso put on a nice show here, both bikes hooked up and carrying the
front wheel way down the strip, Mancuso leapfrogging past Tyrner for the top
spot.
Left Lane: Ray Price Runs 8.838/106.35, Now #10

Right Lane: Jim McClure Runs 6.588/205.33, Now #1
Best prior run: 8.929/102.81, Was #9
McClure is 58, and in this pairing he's the youngster, Price 63 and still
young at heart. Price had to back off to stay out of the wall after leaning way
over to the right for the first 300 feet. But the run of the day was McClure's
pass down the right lane, easily besting both Turner and Mancuso to take over the
top spot on the ladder.

Romine makes a good pass to get in, bumping his brother Jack out of the
field and raising the bar too high for Mattioli to get in either. The bump is now
Spina's 7.069.
Left Lane: Allen Peterson Runs 6.872/167.59, Now #7

Right Lane: Jack Romine Runs 7.192/176.29, Now #11
Best prior run: 7.322/155.81, Was #11
Peterson improves his time, but stays close to the bubble. Romine comes up
short and stays out of the field.

Nice pass by Vancil to close the session, bumping Spina. The bump for
tonight is now Alan Peterson's 6.872.

7:40 PM Wow! We open the final qualifying session with possibly the
quickest side-by-side pass ever for the Nitro Harley racers.
Left Lane: Mike Romine Runs 7.328/151.87, Now #4

Right Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.689/198.80, Now #3
Best prior run: 6.699/209.93, Was #3
Romine abandons the run at 1,000 feet. Turner drove it all the way through,
but couldn't catch Mancuso and McClure.
Left Lane: Jack Romine Runs 6.870/195.95, Now #8

Right Lane: Bill Furr Runs 6.600/205.01, Now #3

Good run by Romine to replace Allen Peterson on the bubble. Even better
pass by Furr to move around Turner in the order.

Stordeur's crew thrashed, screwing in the final sparkplug just in time to
fire the engine for this run. But it was Price who had problems, the engine going
sour on the launch. Stordeur made a great run, edging past his boss Mancuso in
the order.

Mattioli struggled to stay off the right wall and came up short. Spina had
engine problems early in the run and coasted through.

Peterson was the final rider with a chance to bump Jack Romine, needing to
better a 6.870 to do so. He fails to do so, both bikes with sputtering engines.
That concludes qualifying for the bikes.

12:13 PM Romine won the tree, but then it was all McClure, a great pass
with a big speed.

(L) Bill Furr (Belt Drives Ltd '99 Harley) 0.480 6.667 201.65
Great drag race, these two side-by-side all the way down the strip, the
margin of victory = 0.001 seconds (approximately 4 inches). Turner advances,
losing lane choice to McClure.
(W) Doug Vancil (Vance & Hines '00 Harley) 0.495 6.722 207.27
(L) Steve Stordeur (Mancuso Racing '98 Harley) 0.476 7.565 190.51
Vancil struggled through qualifying, but made a good run here against a
tire-smoking opponent. Stordeur had the rear tires spinning hard from the start
and stayed with it anyway, trying to battle back. No such luck, Vancil gets the
win light by a big margin.

The second Team Mancuso bike also smokes the rear tire, but only briefly,

REomine smoked the tire and had to retard the throttle to regain traction.
By then Vancil was long gone. He struggled through qualifying, but has come back
to form in eliminations and will have lane choice against Turner in the
finals.
