Results for Qualifying 1
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in ihra.com
Funny Car at the 12th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals listing lane, driver name,
elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Chris Hunt Runs 6.401/203.57, Now #1
Right Lane: Rob Atchison Runs 6.721/221.23, Now #2
1:34 PM Both cars shook hard on the launch and both drivers pedaled to get
out of it. Hunt's car started trailing a spray of fluid on the top end and the
radio call goes out - "we've got oil."
Left Lane: Jim Lape Runs 5.987/235.10, Now #1
Right Lane: Bruce Peterson JrRuns 6.208/223.71, Now #2
Lape fought his car all the way down the track, the car trying to move
toward the guard rail. Peterson made a clean pass, but Lape left him way
behind.
Left Lane: Paul Zgoda Runs 6.199/226.07, Now #3
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 6.180/227.61, Now #2
Two nice runs, both cars right down the groove.
Left Lane: Fred Tigges Runs 5.997/230.65, Now #2
Right Lane: Santo Volpe Runs 6.105/231.42, Now #3
Two more good runs, the Crown Vic crew with a good out-of-the-box pass and
Tigges in the fives on his first try.
Left Lane: Paul Athey Runs 6.203/227.33, Now #7
Right Lane: Herb Rodgers Runs 6.057/230.29, Now #3
Athey's car tried to make a hard right turn around the 1,000-foot marker and
he did a great job of saving it. Clean pass by Rodgers.
Left Lane: Terry Munroe Runs 6.429/213.27, Now #11
Right Lane: Adam Szeler Runs 6.039/229.94, Now #3
Munroe's car was sluggish off the starting line, shaking hard. Szeler made
a clean pass until the finish line, then his engine let go with a big cloud of oil
smoke - and the dreaded call goes out again, "we've got oil in the shutdown
area."
Left Lane: Mark Thomas Runs 7.834/122.01, Now #14
Right Lane: Scott Weney Runs 6.074/232.97, Now #5
Thomas' car moved to the left on the launch and he struggled to keep it off
the wall, finally throwing in the towel. Clean pass by Weney, right down the
groove.
Left Lane: Tony Bogolo Runs 6.373/224.10, Now #12
Right Lane: Sam Leland Runs 6.179/229.47, Now #7
These two were right together for a bit, but then Bogolo's car started
eating pistons and fell back on the top end. Leland launched into shake, then
recovered nicely to get to the finish line first.
Left Lane: Paul Noakes Runs 6.035/235.04, Now #3
Right Lane: Von Smith No Time, Now #18
Smith wasted a 6.005 at 236.09 when the "Fish" got out of shape and crossed
the centerline, running fender-to-fender with Noakes before crossing back into his
own lane, the two car just a few inches apart in the middle of the run.
Remarkably, neither driver lifted despite the near-collision.
Left Lane: Dan Roman Runs 8.143/105.33, Now #18
Right Lane: Steve Ruda No Time, Now #20
Ruda's car moved about an inch at the green, then just sat there. Roman
launched, shook hard, and shut it down, coasting through.
Left Lane: Dale Brand Runs 6.110/232.91, Now #9
Right Lane: Jimmy Rector Runs 5.972/235.78, Now #1
Two clean runs, Rector taking the top spot away from Lape.
Left Lane: Andy Kelley Runs 6.183/224.21, Now #13
Right Lane: David Rowe Runs 6.102/232.07, Now #8
Kelley's car is plain black, just a few decals along the rocker panels at
the bottom of the body. Two clean runs, no shake we could see from here.
Left Lane: Carl Fumerelle Runs 7.141/189.19, Now #22
Right Lane: Dave Ray Runs 6.183/225.00, Now #13
Fumerelle's car is also plain black - looking like a twin. He shook and
spun the tires hard, then pedaled and eventually found traction.
Left Lane: Joe Comella Runs 6.203/224.15, Now #17
Right Lane: Russel Mudd No Time, Now #28
Mudd struggled to get off the starting line, then took out the finish-line
reflectors. Clean pass by Comella.
Left Lane: Larry Dobbs Runs 6.723/0.00, Now #23
Last car. One of the speed trap reflectors was missing, so no speed. Dobbs
has the chutes out well before the finish line, so it probably didn't matter.

Results for Elimination Round 1
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in
ihra.com Funny Car at the 12th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Scott Weney (Firebird) 0.549 5.943 235.54
(L) Von Smith (Firebird) 0.465 6.056 236.96
12:21 PM The #1 and #2 points leaders meet in round one - somebody is going
to get a great chance to make a big move at the top of the points! Smith
struggled in qualifying and was lined up to make his third qualifying attempt
when the rains came. Smith nails Weney to the tree, but can't run the number and
Weney goes by on the top end to win by a margin of victory = 0.029 seconds
(approximately 10 feet). The #1 in points is out early - can Weney take
advantage?
(W) David Rowe (Cutlass) 0.462 6.102 230.59
(L) Billy Gibson (Camaro) 0.549 6.017 235.23
A holeshot win for Rowe, by a margin of victory = 0.002 seconds
(approximately 8 inches), Gibson closing fast on the top end and coming up just
short.
(W) Jim Lape (Camaro) 0.447 6.036 226.70
(L) Paul Athey (Corvette) 0.464 6.233 211.66
This was a close race to 1,000 feet and then there was a huge cloud of smoke
out the left-side headers on Athey's "Mohegan Sun" and Lape pulled ahead for the
win by a Margin of victory = 0.214 seconds (approximately 66 feet). From the top
end comes the dreaded call, "We've got oil." Lape will have lane choice against
Gibson in round two.
(W) Jimmy Rector (Avenger) 0.592 5.919 236.90
(L) Andy Kelley (Avenger) 0.000(R) (Broke)
The cleanup took about 25 minutes, then Rector made his burnout. Kelley was
in as an alternate, for Bruce Peterson, Jr., and was unable to fire the engine, so
Rector got a freebie. He ran it hard, a nice pass, right down the groove.
(W) Terry Munroe (Firebird) 0.487 5.970 233.70
(L) Santo Volpe ('56 Crown Vic) 0.514 6.112 230.82
The announcers are jokingly calling Volpe's car "the Crown Bricktoria."
Aerodynamics didn't feature in the outcome, both cars running just about where
they qualified, winning by 0.169 seconds (approximately 57 feet).
(W) Fred Tigges (Camaro) 0.705 6.066 235.54
(L) Mark Thomas (Avenger) 0.543 10.484 72.21
Tigges' car lurched into the staging beams and went directly into
deep-stage, probably distracting him a bit. Thomas got a big lead at the start,
but then his car started trailing smoke and slowed, giving Tigges a reprieve. He
will face Munroe next round, Munroe with lane choice.
(W) Dale Brand (Firebird) 0.458 6.025 231.60
(L) Herb Rodgers (Mustang) 0.553 6.153 227.50
This one was Brand all the way, away first and pulling away for an easy win
by a margin of victory = 0.223 seconds (approximately 74 feet). He will face
Weney in round two, Weney with lane choice.
(W) Adam Szeler (Achieva) 0.523 6.028 230.59
(L) Paul Noakes (Mustang) 0.521 6.269 225.16
Final pair. An even start, then Szeler pulls away to win by a margin of
victory = 0.239 seconds (approximately 79 feet). He will face Rector next round,
Rector with lane choice.
Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 2
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Revised results of round 2 eliminations
in ihra.com Funny Car at the 12th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Jimmy Rector (Avenger) 0.549 5.920 238.22
(L) Adam Szeler (Achieva) 0.536 6.106 228.42
2:22 PM This was a good drag race for about 1,000 feet, then Rector's power
took over and he opened the gap, the margin of victory = 0.173 seconds
(approximately 58 feet).
(W) Terry Munroe (Firebird) 0.458 5.956 232.91
(L) Fred Tigges (Camaro) 0.428 6.361 223.71
Two good reaction times, Tigges on the mark this round, but then his car
started chattering the tires and dancing around, forcing him to pedal it to
recover. By then Munroe was long gone on another very nice run - didn't take him
long to catch on to this Funny Car stuff, did it?
(W) Scott Weney (Firebird) 0.475 5.935 236.28
(L) Dale Brand (Firebird) 0.465 6.331 202.33
Brand left just a bit quicker than Weney, but then had to pedal it to get
through shake and Weney was long gone by then. Weney will face Munroe next round
and will have lane choice, by 0.021 seconds.
(W) Jim Lape (Camaro) 0.473 8.737 102.82
(L) David Rowe (Cutlass) 0.342(R) 6.057 233.46
Lape launched and slowed almost immediately with some kind of problem,
coasting through with the win light gleaming. He will face Rector in the
semifinals, Rector with lane choice. Late update, Lape failed fuel check and Rowe
was reinstated.
Sunday
Results for Elimination Round 3
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 3 eliminations in

(W) Scott Weney (Firebird) 0.452 5.969 235.84
(L) Terry Munroe (Firebird) 0.494 5.953 234.07
6:15 PM Semifinals time for the floppers. Weney won this one on a
holeshot, a very good drag race, Munroe closing the gap on the top end but running
out of room. Margin of victory = 0.026 seconds (approximately 9 feet).
(W) Jimmy Rector (Avenger) 0.636 5.895 238.15
(L) David Rowe (Cutlass) 0.475 6.082 231.95
Rowe did everything he could, including putting Rector to sleep - but Rector
still had the performance to run him down and win by a Margin of victory = 0.026
seconds (approximately 9 feet). Unbelievable. Rector has lane choice against
Weney in the finals.
Sunday
Results for Final Round
LEICESTER, N.Y. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final, round 4 eliminations
in ihra.com Funny Car at the 12th annual CARQUEST Empire Nationals:

(W) Jimmy Rector (Avenger) 0.479 5.941 226.47
(L) Scott Weney (Firebird) 0.412 6.092 182.29
8:32 PM Weney looked like he was on his way to the win here, but the blower
let go on the top end, blowing the body off the car. The body came down around
the finish line, on the track, while the chassis came to a stop in the shutdown
area, the chutes automatically deploying when the body came off. Rector was the
winner, by a margin of victory = 0.084 seconds (approximately 22 feet).
