Results for Qualifying 1 |
GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1
qualifying in Top Fuel at the Inaugural Mopar Parts
Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane,
driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in
order following run:
Left Lane: Louie Allison Runs 5.258/229.18, Now #1
Right Lane: Roger Dean Runs 7.072/132.48, Now #2
2:46 PM Allison's car drifted right and skirted the
centerline from 330 feet on. Dean's car had an engine
explosion at 330 feet, but there was no oildown and no
penalty.
Left Lane: Shirley MuldowneyRuns 4.785/309.38, Now #1
Right Lane: Doug Foxworth Runs 5.002/291.82, Now #2
Any doubts about this track were answered when Shirley
made her opening pass, and the run was far from perfect,
the car veering toward the wall and back again from half
track to the finish line. Her run is more than one mph
faster than the current World speed record. Shirley's
driving skills apparently haven't diminished because her
car was way left of the groove and she steered it smoothly
back without lifting.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 4.793/298.21, Now #2
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 8.029/94.70, Now #6
Millican made a smooth run, with a little tire spin on the
top end. Head lost traction about 100 feet out and tried
to drive out of it, the car fishtailing wildly as he
pedaled and steered. He stayed in his own lane and off the
walls, but there will be no mosquitoes around here
tonight!
Left Lane: Jim Bailey Runs 4.905/290.51, Now #4
Right Lane: Paul Romine Runs 4.769/307.58, Now #1
Two good runs, side-by-side most of the way down the
track. Romine misses his season-best ET by 0.001 seconds
and runs his best speed of the year to take over the top
rung of the ladder.
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.966/247.59, Now #5
This looked like a good run for the first 660 feet, then
the engine RPMs came up and the engine let go in a flash
of flame, the engine continuing to burn as he slowed and
pulled off the top end. There's oil on the top end of the
track, so the run does not count and Litton loses 10
championship points.

Results for Qualifying 3 |
GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from final,
round 3 qualifying in Top Fuel at the Inaugural Mopar
Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing
lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round,
position in order following run, best prior elapsed
time/speed, and position in order prior to run:
Left Lane: Jim Bailey Runs 14.915/42.53, Now #4
Best prior run: 4.905/290.51, Was #4
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.977/273.47, Now #5
Best prior run: 7.755/99.77, Was #9
8:57 PM Race officials hoped to be through by now, but
circumstances delayed things long enough that it's dark
enough to clearly see the header flames from these cars.
Litton only needed to beat Roger Dean's 7.072 to get into
the field, but he wanted to be sure he was securely in the
field to protect his points lead. Litton made a good run
to about 1,100 feet then shut it off, achieving his
purpose but leaving him in the bottom half of the field.
Bailey smoked the tires immediately.
Left Lane: Clay Millican Runs 6.060/144.30, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.793/298.21, Was #3
Right Lane: Jim Head Runs 5.027/294.69, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.343/261.17, Was #8
Head pedaled early in his run, the tires starting to
shake, the pedal job good enough to move him off the bump
spot. Millican looked like he was easily going to get to
the finish line first. Then Millican's car started
spinning the tires and veered to the right, so he shut it
off.
Left Lane: Shirley MuldowneyRuns 12.370/37.60, Now #3
Best prior run: 4.785/309.38, Was #2
Right Lane: Doug Foxworth Runs 4.781/307.48, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.002/291.82, Was #6
Shirley went up in smoke immediately. Foxworth made a
strong pass, but the engine let go as he crossed the
finish line. From our vantage point it was difficult to
see what happened next, but the engine explosion produced
a big fireball and the car appeared to get sideways, then
break apart, pieces of the car rolling down the shutdown
area, the flaming engine going one way and the rest of the
car the other way.
After a few anxious moments we hear from the top end that
he is conscious and talking with the medical staff, the
safety crew being very careful as they remove him from the
car. From the reports, it appears the car broke apart as
designed and Foxworth was not involved in the fire.
After a few more anxious moments were are informed that he
is being transported to Sefton Hospital in Exeter, Ontario
by ambulance. He is complaining of pain in his side and he
is being transported on a backboard as a precaution. We
will update his condition as soon as we know anything more
definitive. Whether his accident falls under the
"black flag rule" has not been determined yet,
so it's not clear whether the run will stand.
That's the last pair of cars in the lanes, so qualifying
is completed.

Results for Elimination 1 |
GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1
eliminations in Top Fuel at the Inaugural Mopar Parts
Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Clay Millican (Dragster) 0.534 4.768 306.95
(L) Jim Bailey (Snap-On Racing Dragster) 0.515 4.890 294.69
1:11 PM There was a heated debate in the staging lanes
before the first pair pulled out as the Top Fuel teams and
officials discussed the decision to let Doug Foxworth's
run Saturday night stand as a qualifying run. It will
certainly be debated again after the race is over. For
now, let's go racing.
As was the case in Rockingham, Millican shows he's a force
to be reckoned with, making his best run of the weekend
and his best speed of the season to get the win light
against Bailey. Margin of victory = 0.103 seconds
(approximately 45 feet).
(W) Shirley Muldowney (goracing.com Dragster) 0.506 4.848 310.13
(L) Bruce Litton (WIX Filters Dragster) 0.530 5.033 274.97
If the revised ladder had been used, Shirley would have
been racing Millican, so the decision actually went in her
favor when Litton started smoking the tires at half track,
letting Shirley pull away to an easy win. As a bonus to
getting her first round win of the season, she also
established a new World speed record at 310.13, her 309.38
during qualifying serving as a backup.
(W) Jim Head (Big Daddy's BBQ Dragster) 0.538 4.903 289.20
(L) Doug Foxworth (Snap-On Racing Dragster) 0.000(R) (Broke)
Foxworth was unable to answer the call because of his
accident and first alternate Roger Dean also could not
run, so Head got a bye run. He made a strong launch and a
solid run to about 1,000 feet, then slowed. Shirley will
have lane choice when they meet in the semifinals.
(W) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Racing Dragster) 0.515 4.863 303.43
(L) Louie Allison (Vista Foods Dragster) 0.499 5.201 236.03
Romine won this one easily and Allison's slowing car
drifted right on the top end, taking out the finish line
reflector blocks. Romine advances, but Millican will have
lane choice when they meet in the semifinals.

Results for Elimination 2 |
GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2
eliminations in Top Fuel at the Inaugural Mopar Parts
Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Shirley Muldowney (goracing.com Dragster) 0.517 4.828 278.63
(L) Jim Head (Big Daddy's BBQ Dragster) 0.535 4.879 299.30
3:30 PM This was a good drag race, Shirley with a small
holeshot and then stretching that advantage slightly all
the way down the track, never "headed" (sorry,
couldn't resist at least one pun). Both cars smoked the
tires on the top end. Margin of victory = 0.069 seconds
(approximately 30 feet).
(W) Clay Millican (Dragster) 0.538 4.892 298.40
(L) Paul Romine (CARQUEST Racing Dragster) 0.535 5.198 198.41
Romine had this won for the first 1,000 feet, but then his
car nosed over and Millican got a lucky win. Millican's
car dropped a couple cylinders on the right side and the
car drifted right, almost collecting the guard rail near
the finish line. Shirley will have lane choice in the
final round.

Results for Final Round |
GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of final,
round 3 eliminations in Top Fuel at the Inaugural Mopar
Parts Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol:
W/L Driver RT ET Speed
(W) Clay Millican (Dragster) 0.544 4.848 307.48
(L) Shirley Muldowney (goracing.com Dragster) 0.656 4.889 297.12
5:50 PM The final round got off to a bad start for
Shirley, her car refusing to go into reverse and her crew
having to run down and push her back to the starting line.
Millican could have pushed the issue and staged, but he
waited for her crew to get her back so they could make a
race of it. When the tree came down, it was all Millican
on reaction time, the two cars very close in performance.
That's it, it's 6:00 PM and this race is history. See you
in Cordova, Ill. in two weeks.
