ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - SUMMIT FastNews - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Screamin'
Eagle Nitro Harley at the 2th annual CARQUEST Autumn Nationals listing lane, rider
name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:
Left Lane: Bob Spina Runs 31.714/61.50, Now #2
Right Lane: Steve Stordeur Runs 6.971/164.99, Now #1 We have three man race for the championship. Turner leads Stordeur by only
five points and Mancuso is back 51 points. Spina smoked the tire right off the
starting line and lifted. Stordeur clicked it early, but could not see why.
Left Lane: Ray Price Runs 8.151/111.23, Now #3
Right Lane: Bill Furr Runs 7.270/159.82, Now #2 Furr was leaning toward the centerline all the way down the track attempting
to get the bike in the groove. The bike labored all the way through the quarter
mile. Price with problems around half track.
Left Lane: Jack Romine Runs 7.260/189.60, Now #3
Right Lane: Jim McClure Runs 6.709/214.31, Now #1 McClure with a great looking pass here to show the rest of the field just how
to get down the track. Romine just not getting it to hook up.
Left Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 7.209/198.18, Now #4
Right Lane: Mike Romine Runs 6.836/203.16, Now #2 Romine follows McClure into the number two spot. Mancuso needs to keep pace
with the point leaders.
Left Lane: Jay Turner Runs 6.762/198.58, Now #2
Right Lane: Mark Conner Runs 7.107/166.50, Now #5 It looked like a couple good passes from the start, but Conner had problems on
down track.
Left Lane: Tony Mattioli Runs 18.454/36.76, Now #11
Right Lane: Doug Vancil Runs 6.759/203.92, Now #2 Vancil straight and true down the middle of the lane to take over the number
two spot.
Left Lane: Jamie Emery Runs 7.106/184.22, Now #6 Emery wraps up this session in the number six spot.

Turner needs a great weekend here to attempt to catch Stordeur. Turner does
what he needs to do here as he jumps into the number one spot. That was a great
looking side-by-side drag race.
Left Lane: Mark Conner No Time, Now #8

Right Lane: Johnny Mancuso Runs 6.654/206.39, Now #3
Best prior run: 7.209/198.18, Was #8
The clocks malfunctioned on Conner's run and he will get another shot at it.
Mancuso with a nice looking pass.

Russell had problems right off the starting line and clicked it off. Romine
went from the outside back into the show.

Price was laboring early in the run and attempted to drive it on through.
McClure with the front end of a new World Record.

Furr jumps into the field and that bumped out Emery.

Right Lane: Bob Spina Runs 6.801/182.33, Now #7
Best prior run: 31.714/61.50, Was #14
Stordeur was up in tire smoke as soon as he hit the throttle, and just watched
as Spina with his pass bumped him out of the show. With that pass it also makes it
the quickest Top Fuel Harley field in history with Furr on the bump with a 6.841
second pass. Stordeur with one last pass tonight to make the show and continue his
search for the Season Championship.

Conner with his rerun here and just misses, but will have one more shot.

Both of these bikes have trouble right off the starting line and Emery coast
to a stop on the track. Neither of these guys will qualify.

Romine vs. Romine and Mike smoked his big slick right off the starting line
while Jack thundered on through with the big top end speed.

Price broke his chain as soon as he hit the throttle and Ray will not make the

12:40 PM McClure gets the new ET record on this run. His run was good enough
to back up the 6.429 he ran yesterday in qualifying. Furr broke right off the
line.

(L) Johnny Mancuso (Mancuso Racing '98 Harley) 0.490 11.136 77.34
Mancuso comes off the line and goes up in smoke. He gets off and then back on
the throttle before finally giving up on the run. Romine makes a trouble free
pass.

Romine gets a slight holeshot but hazes the tires about 100 feet out. Turner
makes his quickest run of the weekend. Margin of victory = 0.265 seconds
(approximately 80 feet).

Romine in his first ever Nitro Harley final here. Romine left first , but
was up in smoke immediately and was off and on the throttle. Vancil was on and off
the throttle at least two times, but was able to hold off Romine. That should put
Vancil in third place in the points.
