| Paul Athey, age 24, began his career in
’96 competing in his 1985 Ford Mustang GT and later stepped up
to Super Eliminator. He and Eddie Parker, owner of Cape Codder
Racing, joined forces in 1999 to compete in the Alcohol Funny Car
ranks.
Paul’s career has long-been supported by the Mohegan Sun
Casino and the Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut. Their commitment
remains strong in Cape Codder Racing’s endeavors in 2000 as
well. The Mohegan Sun Resort Casino is the fourth largest casino
in the country and an industry leading gaming and entertainment
complex. Located just off I-395 in Uncasville, CT, the Mohegan Sun
Casino features 179,500 square feet of gaming space; which
accommodates over 3,000 slot machines, 192 gaming tables, High
Stakes Bingo, and Race Book featuring the New York (Horse) Racing
Association. The facility also features some of the region’s
finest dining, entertainment, retail shopping, and the Kids Quest
family entertainment facility.
Together Paul Athey, Eddie Parker, and Mohegan Sun hope to make
a run at the IHRA National Funny Car Championship this season.
"Our goal is to make it to the later rounds at every race and
put on a show for the fans in the process," said Athey. With
only minor exceptions Paul Athey and team have met their goal of
qualifying for IHRA events. Currently Athey & Mohegan Sun
Racing sit 10th in the IHRA.com Funny Car National
Point Standings.
Success and championships are important to Paul Athey, but what
motivates the young man is the fans. "I want to put on the
best show I can for the fans. I want them all to leave the track
saying ‘Wow! What a great day of racing!’," says Athey.
"I wouldn't be out there if it weren't for them." |
