Rockingham, NC- Bobby Lagana and Todd Paton squared off against each other in Top Fuel action Friday afternoon. Lagana was running his DragRacingGirls.com dragster while Paton had to borrow C.J. Nelson's car. His was locked.

They were not racing on the track at the Bethesda Softworks World Finals at Rockingham Dragway, they were battling in a tower suite on a television screen, checking out Bethesda Softworks' IHRA Professional Drag Racing 2005.

Both were impressed by the game, which will be out for Playstation 2, XBOX, and PC on November 1 with a retail price tag of $19.99.

"That was definitely kind of cool, racing your own car," Lagana said. "It's hard to believe, though. They really did a great job with the graphics and the car looks awesome. They really paid attention to detail, they really put some effort into it. That game will sell. It's awesome."

Lagana was able to beat Paton when he was playing the one-player mode against the computer. He ran in the 4.7's a couple of times to breeze to easy victories against Paton's Tim Horton-sponsored car. Then Paton came into the room. Though he was unable to use his own car, which was locked, he took control of Nelson's car and rolled to victory.

"Todd ran well in C.J.'s car," Lagana said. "He was tough, but everybody gets lucky."

Paton was impressed with the improvements Bethesda Softworks have introduced to the 2005 version of IHRA Professional Drag Racing.

"They made it a lot more playable than the old one," Paton said. "The interfaces are easier and it will be a lot more enjoyable. In the past we tried to use the other games, and I will tell you it is a lot easier to drive a Top Fuel dragster in person than on the old game. But this one is a lot of fun and I think it will be a big seller for them."

Bethesda Softworks Vice President of Marketing and Public Relations Pete Hines was pleased with the drivers' responses to the game.

"There is always a little bit of disconnect between what we are doing, we think it's fun and we have a good time with it, but until you put it in front of a couple of guys who know what they are doing, know what is realistic and what is not realistic as it relates to their sport, you never really know," Hines said. "To have them come in and have fun with it, laughing at each other as they are racing and having a good time, is very gratifying."

Hines also is satisfied with the overall improvements in the game.

"Compared to previous titles it's not even close," Hines said. "We didn't really try to build upon what we had done before. We said all along that we were going to blow up what we had done before and start all over."

Lagana was especially pleased with his car's appearance...and can't wait to show his sponsors at DragRacingGirls.com.

"This is invaluable," Lagana said. "We can tell our sponsors that they are in a video game, how many people are in a video game? Dale Earnhardt, Tiger Woods, they have their own video games. Now we have ours."

The Cars

The game features 4 different types of drag racing cars: Top Fuel, Alcohol Funny Cars, Pro Modified and Pro Stock. Each car is fully modeled and built of individual parts helping to create entertaining and realistic damage from crashes. Top Fuel and Funny Cars will feature destructible shells that disentegrate on impact – Pro-Mod and Pro Stock cars feature deformable, trunks, door panels, hoods, car roofs, fenders and bumpers to reflect the more ridgid construction of these cars.

Top Fuel
Top Fuel Dragster represents the pinnacle of drag racing performance. Utilizing a supercharged engine producing over 6,000 horsepower from 500 cubic inches of displacement, these machines can accelerate from a standing start to 100 miles per hour in less than one second, and cover the quarter mile in the 4-second zone at over 320 mph. You'll feel these earth-shaking machines even at the top of the grandstands as they launch with G-forces rivaling those of a space shuttle.

Pro Modified
Pro Modified is one of the most popular divisions in the sport. These vehicles embody the true spirit of hot rodding, offering a wildly diverse group of race cars and a variety of 2000 horsepower engines. Combining classic body styles and modern equipment, teams burn gasoline or methanol in either supercharged or nitros oxide powerplants pushing them to low 6-second times at over 220 mph. The war constantly rages back and forth between the blown cars and the nitrous cars, each seeking to claim dominance over one of darg racing's most exciting and volitile classes.

Funny Cars
Funny Cars are the quickest and fastest full bodied race cars in IHRA Drag Racing. Cloaked in fiberglass or carbon fiber replicas of passenger car bodies, each vehicle is powered by a supercharged, fuel-injected engine capable of 3,000 horsepower, producing 5-second elapsed times at 240 mph. Funny Cars rock the house with long, smokey burnouts, and screaming RPM's through the gears. The drivers make it look easy, but Funny Cars remain one of the toughest cars to manhandle down the track.

Pro Stock
To the drag racing purist Pro Stock remains the most important category in the sport. Deeply rooted in the legacy of musclecars, Pro Stock vehicles retain street ID while relying soley on gasoline-burning carbureted engines under 820 cubic inches to surpass 210 mph. Each car is scrutinized to make certain it fits specific body templates, thus ensuring the factory look. Every car runs Sunoco Race Fuel, which is put into their fuel cells in the staging lanes from the same drums. All that's left is the Ford versus General Motors versus Dodge rivalry that has raged for decades.
