Pro-Am News - Loctite/DUCK Team Takes Toronto
July 29, 2003
By Team Duck/Loctite
Salem, Ohio - Riding the wave of their fortunate
success in the early part of their foray into
the Hooters IHRA Racing Series, the Loctite/Duck
brand products team ventured into Canada for
the first time, for the 2nd Annual ACDelco Canadian
Nationals. The Toronto stop on the tour was
an important one for the team, as Loctite has
a plant in nearby Mississauga, Ontario.
Michael
Beard, driver of Terry Knott's G/CM Dodge, qualified
14th in the 35 car Stock Eliminator field, with
an 11.17 at 118 mph. Beard cut through six rounds
of eliminations to win the event, capturing
his first Iron Man trophy in just his second
IHRA National Event. The toughest round came
in the finals, where he faced Chuck Nagy, from
Niagara Falls, Ontario.
"I
knew the final against Nagy was going to be
tricky," said Beard. His Corvette sits
really low in the front, and I figured it would
be tripping the finish line beam with the nose
of the car and not the tire. I lost the toss,
and he put me in the right lane. When we both
pre-staged, I marked my window right on his
nose. When we crossed the stripe, I just tried
to put my mark right on his nose. It was a really
tight race!"
Beard carded a .008 to .022 starting line advantage,
and he needed every bit of it. He took the finish
line by .005 seconds, and won the double-breakout
by .009, with a closer 11.334 on an 11.35 dial.
Nagy broke out with a 12.505 on a 12.53. Paul
Cambria was the lone semi-finalist.
"I
have to thank my car owner, Terry Knott, again
for the opportunity to drive the car. It's a
big sacrifice for him, as he's in the points
chase too," explained Beard. "The
Canadian fans were absolutely great. We're happy
to win another one for the Duck brand products
team, and again, it's even better to do it for
the folks at Loctite, with their Canadian plant
being so close! They call Duck brand duct tape
'America's Favorite Tool', but we think it's
Canada's favorite now, too!
"I'd also like to thank AutoShack Transmissions,
Tim Sloan Racing Engines, Mike Tridel at AutoMeter,
and Mickey Thompson Tires. Thanks also to my
Duck racing partner Matt Zapp, who was instrumental
in helping forge the great relationship we have
with our Duck products family!"

1 Pro-Am Tour. The following week, August 8-10,
will bring the team to Martin, Mich., for the
22nd Annual Northern Nationals, at US 131 Motorsports
Park, servicing the Grand Rapids market.
