Drummonds, TN - Clay Millican, driver of the Werner Enterprises Top Fuel dragster, will join the NHRA Winston Drag Racing tour for the final two events of the 2001 season in Las Vegas and Pomona. The Lehman Racing team competed at two NHRA events earlier in the year (Gainesville and Topeka) and qualified in the top half of the field at both races, reaching the quarterfinals in Topeka.

Millican enters the ACDelco Las Vegas NHRA Nationals as the newly crowned 2001 IHRA Top Fuel world champion. Led by master crew chief, Mike Kloeber, the Werner Enterprises hot rod dominated the IHRA tour, winning six consecutive IHRA national events during the season to seize the crown. Millican broke a 26-year-old IHRA record for consecutive national event wins (5) held by "Big Daddy" Don Garlits and ran quicker (4.601-seconds) and faster (323.58-mph) than anyone in IHRA history. Millican, who holds both ends of the IHRA Top Fuel performance records, qualified No. 1 at seven of the ten races on the tour and finished the season with a 22-4 won/loss record, which translates to a staggering 84% winning percentage. All of this was accomplished with a 25-percent limit on the blower overdrive.

Not only will Kloeber have a chance to turn up the wick on the Werner dragster in Vegas and Pomona, he'll also have some fresh pipe to play with during the Tennessee-based team's trip out west. Team owner Peter Lehman, a charismatic 25-year-old motorsports visionary from Chicago, stocked the Werner nitro arsenal with a brand new state-of-the-art Brad Hadman racecar prior to the final IHRA event in Shreveport last weekend.

Kloeber and the team shook down the car with a brief squirt at Memphis Motorsports Park the day before leaving for the Shreveport event. After a one-week rain delay, Millican and the Werner Enterprises crew finished the IHRA season by qualifying second and advancing to the semifinals at the IHRA World Finals. Now the team has their sights set on disrupting the tight NHRA Top Fuel point’s battle.

"The Werner team is heading out west with every intention of becoming a factor in the outcome of the 2001 NHRA Top Fuel championship," said Millican. "Mike (Kloeber) would love nothing more than to win one of the final races of the Winston-era and we're going to work as hard as we can to make it happen."

Millican will also be part of a special pre-race autograph session that will take place at the ESPN Zone in the New York New York Hotel and Casino on the world-famous Las Vegas Strip, Thursday, Oct. 25, from 8-9:30 p.m. The autograph session is free to the public.
