John Montecalvo Debuts First
Cavalier In IHRA Pro Stock; Sets Unofficial World Record

VA - John Montecalvo's crew had to dig their rig out from under
three feet of snow in Maine just to make it to the CompetitionPlus.com
Spring Open presented by Lizzard Racing Engines. If hindsight were 20/20,
then shoveling snow was never a more pleasurable experience than it was
this time. An unofficial record was the reward for his crew led by
crewchief Steven Cultrera.
Montecalvo debuted the first 2001 Cavalier in Pro Stock class. The CITGO
sponsored Cavalier rocketed off the line and produced a 1.02 sixty-foot
time on its first-ever launch. One day later, he made history with a 6.575
elapsed time at 208.71 miles per hour.
"It was an excellent run," explained Montecalvo. "I was a
little apprehensive in the first session because it is a new car and this
weekend was actually the first time we had actually started it."
As the new continues to wear off, Montecalvo says that the possibilities
are endless.
"I seem to think that the Chevy's are back," said Montecalvo.
"I honestly believe that you haven't seen anything yet. We are the
Ford's worst enemy and you can quote me on that."
Montecalvo feels that the elapsed time and mile per hour record holders
need to start feeling nervous. The Cavalier's compact size and streamline
nature makes it an excellent contender to swipe those records away.
"The car felt great and to be honest, I'm still getting comfortable
in it," expressed Montecalvo. "It is a lot different than what I
am used to, but it is a great car. It got a little out to the right and I
had to let off of it on a few runs, but I didn't want to do anything
crazy."
Montecalvo gave the fans a glimpse of things to come as he rocketed to a
6.610/208.65 on Saturday in just the second lap on the machine. His third
run on Sunday afternoon netted the quickest lap of all with a 6.575. His
incremental times were a .949 (60-foot) and a 4.224/166.52 (eighth-mile).
Just to think, it almost didn't happen because of three feet of snow.
