South Carolina Facility Remains in IHRA Family

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — South Carolina Motorplex has a number of big events on its 2018 schedule, but the former Orangeburg Dragway remains firmly committed to the grassroots, sportsman racer through a multi-year sanctioning agreement with the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA).

Racers at the Orangeburg, S.C., facility will still have the chance to participate in the IHRA Summit SuperSeries, the largest and most prestigious bracket racing program in drag racing. The $200,000 program is the World Championship for over 8,000 Sportsman racers at nearly 100 IHRA-sanctioned tracks each season.

New owner Jeff Biegun purchased the track last November and immediately announced plans for a series of upgrades. There is a new tower in place and plenty of work has been done to the track surface. Other upgrades either finished or in the works include a new timing system and scoreboards, 2,000 feet of concrete walls and several new coats of paint.

The staff is also working on a number of other spectator amenities including ticket windows, and concessions. In addition, they are clearing off more of the 314-acre property for other racing venues and to create more room for special events like swap meets, concerts and flea markets.

“They’ve put a lot of heart and soul into it, and have done wonders with the property,” IHRA Division Director Josh Peake said about the track’s improvements. “From a drag racing standpoint, they’ve made it into one of the top 1/8-mile facilities in the entire region.”
