Mid-Michigan Destination Joins IHRA Family

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — Mike Ledford doesn’t see Mid-Michigan Motorplex as simply a race track. The promoter of the Stanton, Mich., facility sees it as a racer’s destination.

Mid-Michigan features a 1/4-mile track with a state-of-the-art Compulink timing system and a huge paving project has taken place during the offseason. The latest upgrade is Mid-Michigan becoming an International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) member track, which works well with the Motorplex taking care of its local sportsman racers.

“Our schedule is set up around our bracket racers and that’s who we cater to,” Ledford said. “For what we’re trying to do, the IHRA and the Summit SuperSeries is a great fit for our track and our racers.”

Ledford and his family have been involved with the track since 1975. They’re racers and have a good idea of what they and their fellow competitors enjoy seeing at the track. They also run a points program which fits well into the IHRA’s philosophy of providing value for the racer.

“It’s racer-friendly and anyone who races there will tell you we do all we can to get cars down the track and the race in,” Ledford said. “We run points both days to get more racing each time you come to the track. We’re set up with the racer in mind. We have an idea of what makes it more of a destination to come to and more convenient for the racer.”

The Motorplex, which supplies the racers with Sunoco brand racing fuel, has a strong points program already for their weekly racers with prizes from track partners including American Race Cars. Now, they will also partake in the $200,000 Summit SuperSeries program with eligible Box and No-Box champions having the chance to race for $20,000 and other prizes at the IHRA Summit World Finals in Memphis.

“To have the chance to race for $20,000 on top of that, it’s a huge bonus,” Ledford said. “If you qualify to get there, you get paid just to show up, so that’s so good for our racers. For the local weekly guy, it’s a program with a lot more opportunity than other options.”
