DRM Issue #17 – One Weekend…Two Brothers…Three Classes…Four Ironmen!
| POSTED: 2009-09-17 01:20:00 |

Family racing is a keystone of our sport, but few families have achieved the level of success enjoyed by the Folk family, of Durand, Illinois.
When family patriarch Ron and sons Nick and Brian show up at an event, competitors in all classes know they are in for a fight. Among the three Folks, there are numerous event titles, as well as divisional and national championships, in Quick Rod, Super Rod, Stock, Super Stock, Top Dragster, and Top Sportsman.
At the recent Summit Pro-Am double-header at Pittsburgh Raceway Park, the Folk brothers were flexing their muscles again, taking a total of four IHRA Ironman trophies in three classes.
Brian picked up Super Rod gold both days, while Nick claimed victories in Stock on day 1 and Super Stock on day 2. (The following day, Nick took a win in Super Stock during the Champion System Sportsman Nationals, and one weekend later he picked up another Stock win at Osceola Dragway).
There is a remarkable story on Pro Modified competitor Chris Russo in Issue 17, one you don’t want to miss. Russo, a firefighter from New Jersey, was among the first to respond to the nearby World Trade Center towers when they were attacked on September 11, 2001. His recollections of the events of that day, of the heroes, the victims, the friends he lost, and the effect it all had on his life, are moving and inspirational.
We also have coverage of the Summit Pro-Am Tour events at Pittsburgh Raceway Park, Dallas Raceway, and Osceola Dragway, as well as the Champion System Sportsman Nationals at Pittsburgh.
Don’t miss the opportunity to get off track with Randy Cunningham as he interviews one of the rising stars of IHRA Top Fuel, Canada’s Tim Boychuk.
There’s also another of Susan Wade’s features on IHRA members tracks. This time around she presents her inimitable perspective on Tennessee’s Middle Tennessee Dragway.
And of course IHRA President Aaron Polburn offers his unique take on the state-of-the-sport and the world in general in his “The Last Word” column.
