HOTlanta tips the scales to start Friday Night Drags season

Scott Heaton Blog, Atlanta Motor Speedway:

The 16 car field that entered into the U.S. Air Force King of the Street, was the weirdest of the series.  Four pickup trucks were in the running, 2 Chevys and 2 Dodges.  The Mopars faired very well.  As the red and gray Dodge ¾ ton with a single 6 inch stack out of the bed, made it clear to the final, but broke on the semi final pass.  The Vette he raced came back against “HotRod”, the dude in the full size, 4 door chevy, a self proclaimed “grandma’s car”.

The reason the field was weird, was because of the different varieties of cars and trucks.  We had the 2 diesel Dodges, an old Cobra, the “grandma car”, 2 Vipers, a couple of Chevy pickups and a few ‘Vettes and Mustangs.  No tuners cars, no 4 cylinders on the juice, just 8 cylinder domestic vehicles.  The racing was tight, with the arm drop start catching a couple of guys off guard and putting them out of the race, due to the false start.

The final was a barn burner.  After the Dodge pickup broke that put the Vette back in.  “HotRod” did not like this set up.  He felt that since his competitor broke and the Vette false started, he should be crowned the King of the Street.  The officials decided to make a show and a race of it, by bring the Vette back.  In the main event the Vette came out on top, much to the dismay of “Hot Rod”.

After the King of the Street was crowned, a dude in a 5.0 came out and challenged the Vette for his trophy and the cash.  The Vette put up the cash but kept the trophy!!  In the money match, the Mustang came out on top, and then would not accept the challenge from a Chevy pickup, that was more race than street.  The ‘Stang would not take the challenge, but did accept a challenge from another Mustang for the money.  The original 5.0 won the race and kept his money!!  There was one other grudge match money race of note tonight.  A Honda Civic wagon against a Dodge Neon for One Thousand dollars!  The Civic made the Neon look stupid, with a blowout win.  It was fun to watch the money change hands on the start line by the pit crews!!
It was a fantastic night in Atlanta.  Can’t wait for 09!!
