IHRA president Aaron Polburn talks with Andrew Moore from the Richmond County Daily Journal at Rockingham Dragway's Chamber Day

Before the cars fire and smoke from hundreds of burnouts fills the air over Rockingham Dragway, track owner/operator Steve Earwood invited about 100 of his fellow area businessmen to check out the facility and get an up-close look at assorted race cars Thursday afternoon prior to the IHRA Spring Nationals.

As usual, there was a big crowd at the buffet table

Earwood’s Chamber of Commerce Day has become a tradition of sorts at the IHRA Spring Nationals, giving business leaders in Munroe and Richmond County a chance to experience Rockingham Dragway first-hand and up close.

Rockingham Dragway owner Steve Earwood and IHRA president Aaron Polburn speak about the IHRA Spring Nationals

“Steve is a very important, active person in the business community here in Rockingham and surrounding communities,” IHRA president Aaron Polburn said. “This is a great event that really gives the community the chance to see what Rockingham Dragway is all about.”

The assembled community busniess leaders mingled among Top Fuel and Nitro Funny Cars

After speaking to the assembled crowd, Earwood had a drawing to give away a few rides in Roy Hill’s two-seat dragster. Quick Rod competitor Kathy Fischer also spoke to the group, thanking area business leaders for their hospitality to the racers and fans who visit during the IHRA Spring Nationals. Fischer then did a burnout for the crowd. Dick Rosberg's jet dragster also made an exhibition pass.

The crowd loved the jet dragster

“I had a great time, it was really fun and everyone was very friendly,” Fischer said. “I wouldn’t have expected anything different. We’re treated so well every time we come down here…that’s why Rockingham Dragway is one of our favorite places to race.”
