Qualifying Round 1
GRAND BEND, Ont. - GRAND BEND - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Torco Top Fuel at the 2007 Knoll - Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, Mopar Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Grant Flowers Runs 8.718/91.24, Now #1
Right Lane: Todd Paton Runs 12.003/72.43, Now #2

8:16 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 67 degrees, relative humidity 56 percent, barometer 29.47 inches, adjusted altitude 1,288 feet, track temperature 85 degrees.

Paton lost traction early and lifted. Flowers got a bit further, then started rattling the tires and appeared to push a head gasket out, the tires and the engine trailing smoke and "stuff." Both cars posted low 0.9-second 60-foot times. Flowers was making his first pass of the 2007 season, by the way - and his first "Black Flag," the cleanup starting right at the starting line.

Right Lane: Jim Cavalieri Runs 4.874/282.60, Now #1

8:40 p.m. After the cleanup, Cavalieri put Jack Ostrander's dragster atop the list with a relatively easy run.
Left Lane: Mitch King Runs 5.945/150.36, Now #2
Right Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 10.598/85.60, Now #4

King got off the line with a hard launch, then started rattling the tires and pedaled it a couple times to get to the other end. McMillen also had a good 60-foot time, 0.895 to King's 0.875, but then lost traction and coasted through.
Left Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr. Runs 12.701/61.39, Now #7
Right Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 4.768/301.07, Now #1

Lagana launched into hard tire shake and the headers went wet. Cannon went right down the groove on a sooth, clean run. As he neared the finish line, there was a POP and some expensive sounds, but those noises appeared to have been from Lagana's engine, which was still pumping raw fuel as he coasted down the track.
Left Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 10.032/81.27, Now #6
Right Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 4.662/314.83, Now #1

The top two in points round out the session. Litton's car was moving all over the lane and he shut it down. Zizzo made a flawless-looking run and came up a couple hundredths short of Rick Cooper's 4.646 track record. He gets the "Last Man Standing" award for Top Fuel tonight, picking up five valuable points as he tries to extend his lead over Litton in the points.

After one session, it's Zizzo atop the list and Bobby Lagana is outside the field, nine cars trying to squeeze into an eight-car ladder.

Left Lane: Todd Paton Runs 5.559/171.40, Now #5
Best prior run: 12.003/72.43, Was #8

2:43 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 55 percent, barometer 29.62 inches, adjusted altitude 1,731 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

Both drivers had problems getting a grip on the track last night. Neither was under power at the finish line today, either, but both made it almost to half track before trouble set in. Paton lost power just before half track, Lagana just past. However, both managed to get into the field, putting Bruce Litton on the bump spot at 10.032 and Edmonton winner Terry McMillen on the outside of the field.

Left Lane: Terry McMillen Runs 5.586/170.82, Now #6
Best prior run: 10.598/85.60, Was #9

It looked like McMillen pushed out a head gasket about 400 feet down the track and the header flames went out around the 1,000-foot marker, but McMillen got back in the field, putting Litton on the outside and Grant Flowers on the bump spot at 8.718.
Left Lane: Jim Cavalieri Runs 5.402/186.67, Now #3

Litton lost traction early, pedaled, and squeaked into the field on the bump spot. Cavalieri appeared to be on a good run, but started smoking the tires just before half track, then pushed out a head gasket and coasted across the line. That bumped Flowers, who was not in line for this session.
Left Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 5.805/157.08, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.768/301.07, Was #2

Cannon left hard, started losing traction before half track, and lifted.
Left Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 8.920/93.65, Now #1

Both left hard, 0.880 60-foot time for King, 0.871 for Zizzo, but both started losing traction and shut off before half track, Zizzo around 300 feet, King around 500 feet.

Best prior run: 5.559/171.40, Was #6

Paton's car made a couple of hard moves enroute to the finish line, but the header flames stayed up and steady all the way through.
Left Lane: Jim Cavalieri Runs 15.298/55.49, Now #5
Best prior run: 4.874/282.60, Was #4
Right Lane: Bruce Litton Runs 4.792/316.38, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.169/156.15, Was #8

Cavalieri's car shook and the header flames went out almost immediately. Litton made a nice run, but was not quick enough to knock McMillen out of the "Last Man Standing" position for this round.
Left Lane: Scotty Cannon Runs 9.349/92.82, Now #2
Best prior run: 4.768/301.07, Was #2
Right Lane: Mitch King Runs 4.980/285.05, Now #7
Best prior run: 5.945/150.36, Was #8

Cannon rattled the tires and was in and out of the throttle a couple times before lifting. King ran it all the way through to improve by almost a full second.
Left Lane: T.J. Zizzo Runs 9.195/95.23, Now #1
Best prior run: 4.662/314.83, Was #1
Right Lane: Bobby Lagana Jr. Runs 4.735/309.34, Now #2
Best prior run: 5.395/189.68, Was #8

Last pair before the jet truck and the fireworks...Zizzo lost traction early and lifted, but Lagana drove it all the way through to move all the way up to second in the order and take the "Last Man Standing" bonus for this round.

Elimination Round 1
GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Torco Top Fuel at the 2007 Knoll - Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, Mopar Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol:
  W/L Driver RT ET Speed

  (W) Terry McMillen (Torco Nitro Fuels Dragster) 0.091 5.138 207.75
  (L) Mitch King (La King's Confections Dragster) 0.142 8.077 94.74

12:33 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 39 percent, barometer 29.80 inches, adjusted altitude 2,004 feet, track temperature 110 degrees. According to track preparation "guru" Jim Weinert, the new asphalt at the end of the concrete launch pad is at least 10 degrees hotter than the starting line, so once the cars get through the first 300 feet they have a second challenge to overcome.

These two had several minutes to think about their runs, sitting strapped in their cars in the hot sunshine while the track crew worked to clean up some "stuff" left by the final pair of Funny Cars.

King's car shook early in the run, then spit out the blower belt McMillen started spinning the tires down track and shut off early, coasting across with the win.

  (W) Scotty Cannon (Sealy Wright Auto Group Drag 0.093 5.007 290.76
  (L) Todd Paton (Paton Racing Dragster) 0.138 8.858 100.52

Both drivers came into eliminations with just one full pass during qualifying, Cannon on his first, Paton his last.

Paton's car was quicker for the first 60 feet, but went into tire shake and he shut it off, while Cannon went smoothly down the track under power - the car setup was very soft, but it was the key to avoiding major traction problems on this tricky track.

  (W) Jim Cavalieri (Vista Food Dragster) 0.076 5.040 264.13
  (L) Bobby Lagana Jr. (TORCO Dragster) 0.063 5.881 167.99

Same story here, Cavalieri's first qualifying run was a good one, as was Lagana's third. The other two runs were "throwaways."

Cavalieri also made a soft setup pay off, the car not aggressive in the middle of the track. Lagana's setup was also soft initially, but he started smoking the tires and pedaling about 300 feet out and he will not repeat his historic 2006 success at Grand Bend. Cavalieri will have lane choice when he races McMillen in the semifinals.

  (W) T.J. Zizzo (Race News Magazine Dragster) 0.085 5.013 289.07
  (L) Bruce Litton (Lucas Oil Dragster) 0.067 5.066 273.94

Last pair finds the #1 and #2 in points facing each other, Zizzo the #1 qualifier based on his first run, Litton getting in on his last. Both had two throwaways in three qualifying attempts.

Litton led this one all the way past 1,000 feet, then Zizzo ran him down for a half-car-length win. Both cars were fighting for traction on the top end of the track and Zizzo's car was stronger in that part of the track. T.J. Zizzo's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.041), 330 ft(-0.105), 660ft(-0.076), 1,000ft(-0.013). MOV: 0.0352 seconds (approximately 14 feet). Zizzo faces Cannon next round, Cannon has lane choice.

Elimination Round 2
GRAND BEND, Ont. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 2 eliminations in Torco Top Fuel at the 2007 Knoll - Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, Mopar Canadian Nationals presented by Castrol:
  W/L Driver RT ET Speed

  (L) Terry McMillen (Torco Nitro Fuels Dragster) 0.124 8.418 89.54

3:00 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 84 degrees, relative humidity 35 percent, barometer 29.67 inches, adjusted altitude 2,156 feet, track temperature 120 degrees.

Both cars smoked the tires about 200 feet out, both drivers pedaled, then it appeared that McMillen's car pitched the blower belt, the pipes going wet. Cavalieri never did get it hooked back up again, but he kept it pointed in the right direction and didn't blow it up.

  (W) Scotty Cannon (Sealy Wright Auto Group Drag 0.107 4.973 289.88
  (L) T.J. Zizzo (Race News Magazine Dragster) 0.077 5.824 170.95

These two ran within 0.006 seconds of each other in the first round, so this promised to be a close contest and Cannon had lane choice. That may have been the difference because Zizzo had a big head start, but also had bigger traction problems than Cannon and pedaled it, pushing out a head gasket or two. Zizzo led past 330 feet, then lost momentum and the race was over. Cannon's run was no record-setter, but he won and has lane choice over Cavalieri in the final round.
