Qualifying Round 1
TULSA, Okla. - TULSA - Notes from round 1 qualifying in Torco Pro Modified at the 2007 Knoll - Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, Inaugural Skull Shine Sooner Nationals presented by Wolverine and Academy Sports + Outdoors listing lane, driver name, elapsed time, top speed, and position in order following run:

Left Lane: Jason Hamstra Runs 6.922/213.20, Now #2
Right Lane: Dave Pierce Runs 6.604/204.91, Now #1

7:41 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 71 degrees, relative humidity 84 percent, barometer 29.48 inches, adjusted altitude 1,659 feet, track temperature 84 degrees.

Hamstra's car got very loose in the middle of the run and he had to muscle it back to the groove. Pierce is a local, from Claremore.

Left Lane: Rickie Smith Runs 6.203/225.41, Now #1
Right Lane: Chip King Runs 12.235/59.92, Now #4

King is running the high-winged Daytona once again - neat car! But he shook and blew the tires loose. "Tricky" Rickie motored right down the groove on a smooth, easy-looking pass and moved to the head of the class. Not bad for the first full pass on a new race car.

King's car stopped on the track, so there was a delay while they towed him off, then cleaned up a trail of "stuff" in his lane.

Left Lane: Joe Mulligan No Time, Now #6
Right Lane: Eddie Ware Runs 6.326/225.63, Now #2

8:20 p.m. King blew the transmission, transmission fluid is tough to clean up.

Mulligan's great-looking Camaro made it to the head of staging, did not make the run.

Left Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.154/230.65, Now #1
Right Lane: Harold Martin Runs 8.525/112.60, Now #6

martin's car slowed in a cloud of white smoke around half track. Jenkins made a strong, smooth pass to take over the top spot and replaces Smith as the "Last Man S4tanding."
Left Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.279/232.67, Now #3
Right Lane: John Russo Runs 10.849/78.09, Now #8

Both cars shook hard. Russo threw in the towel. Janis pedaled and finished the run.
Left Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 6.214/228.23, Now #3
Right Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 8.399/105.59, Now #8

Castellana's car made a hard move on the launch and he was out of the groove most of the way down the track, but Hagan went right down the groove and the numbers show it.
Left Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 11.629/71.77, Now #12
Right Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.243/232.27, Now #4

Auxier shook early and slowed. Stott lost a lot of time getting off the line, then got it tamed down and made a good finish.
Left Lane: Jim Halsey Runs 6.345/228.58, Now #8
Right Lane: Pat Stoken Runs 6.207/228.73, Now #3

Nothing much to say - both cars went right down the track with no major excursions.
Left Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 6.896/164.87, Now #10
Right Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 11.546/90.27, Now #15

Hoover was off the throttle almost immediately. Lang shook early and battled all the way.
Left Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 9.650/88.68, Now #15
Right Lane: Scott Cannon Runs 6.219/230.92, Now #5

Both cars shook and danced, both drivers pedaled, then Rowe gave it up, Cannon finished strongly. But it was "The Iceman" who came out atop the field and "The Last Man Standing."

Qualifying Round 2
TULSA, Okla. - TULSA - Notes from round 2 qualifying in Torco Pro Modified at the 2007 Knoll - Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, Inaugural Skull Shine Sooner Nationals presented by Wolverine and Academy Sports + Outdoors listing lane, driver name, elapsed time/top speed this round, position in order following run, best prior elapsed time/speed, and position in order prior to run:

Left Lane: Jeff Elam Runs 41.593/67.16, Now #21
                                   No Prior Run
Right Lane: Joe Mulligan Runs 6.381/230.65, Now #10
                                   No Prior Run

1:39 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 76 degrees, relative humidity 72 percent, barometer 29.52 inches, adjusted altitude 1,949 feet, track temperature 95 degrees.

John Russo is on the bump spot at 10.849, so this session should produce a lot of changes. The track appeared to be in very good shape for the Pro Stock session, so these cars should do well today.

Mulligan broke yesterday and this was Elam's first attempt.

Elam's car lurched off the line, then started coasting. Mulligan two-stepped the launch, killing his 60-foot time, then made a strong run.

Left Lane: Chip King Runs 6.425/228.54, Now #11
Best prior run: 12.235/59.92, Was #20
Right Lane: Kirk Kuhns Runs 6.872/162.41, Now #13
                                   No Prior Run

This was Kuhns' first qualifying attempt. King ran last night, blew the transmission early in the run.

Scotty Cannon was standing behind King's Daytona, watching intently. King's car was very slow off the line, 1.078 seconds, and never did come on strong. Kuhns shook early and the car nosed over on the top end. Now Mike Castellana is on the bump spot at 8.399.

Left Lane: Ed Hoover Runs 6.317/226.09, Now #9
Best prior run: 11.546/90.27, Was #20
Right Lane: Burton Auxier Runs 6.201/224.51, Now #2
Best prior run: 11.629/71.77, Was #21

Hoover's car was also slow off the line, but Auxier had a 0.998 short time and a nice-looking pass. Now Kenny Lang is on the bump spot at 6.896.
Left Lane: John Russo Runs 6.472/228.38, Now #15
Best prior run: 10.849/78.09, Was #21
Right Lane: Danny Rowe Runs 6.150/231.60, Now #1
Best prior run: 9.650/88.68, Was #20

Rowe went to the top spot, but it appeared he sacrificed some engine parts on the top end, the car trailing smoke. Russo made a clean pass, but that time probably won't hold up through this session.
Left Lane: Harold Martin Runs 6.238/227.27, Now #9
Best prior run: 8.525/112.60, Was #21
Right Lane: Jason Hamstra Runs 6.223/226.73, Now #8
Best prior run: 6.922/213.20, Was #19

Nice runs, a pair, Hamstra strong early in the run, Martin strong on the top end. Now Chip King is on the bump spot at 6.425.
Left Lane: Mike Castellana Runs 9.359/92.33, Now #21
Best prior run: 8.399/105.59, Was #21
Right Lane: Kenny Lang Runs 8.637/107.89, Now #20
Best prior run: 6.896/164.87, Was #20

Both cars made some major moves early in the run, both drivers shut off to stay off the concrete.
Left Lane: Dave Pierce Runs 6.514/213.03, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.604/204.91, Was #18
Right Lane: Jim Halsey Runs 6.154/231.44, Now #2
Best prior run: 6.345/228.58, Was #14

Pierce's car made a big move sideways at the launch, killing his elapsed time. Halsey managed a 1.00 short time and improved from there on on a nice pass.
Left Lane: Eddie Ware Runs 6.190/228.42, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.326/225.63, Was #14
Right Lane: Mike Janis Runs 6.118/230.96, Now #1
Best prior run: 6.279/232.67, Was #12

Nice runs in both lanes after so-so starts.

Eddie Ware's incremental times: 60ft-1.015 sec., 330ft-2.709, 660ft-4.049/182.50mph, 1,000ft-5.209
Mike Janis' incremental times: 60ft-1.023 sec., 330ft-2.700, 660ft-4.022/187.18mph, 1,000ft-5.152.

Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.197/232.55, Now #6
Best prior run: 6.243/232.27, Was #13
Right Lane: Matt Hagan Runs 6.423/229.43, Now #10
Best prior run: 6.214/228.23, Was #9

These two fired, then shut off when the trackside observers spotted some debris in Janis' lane at the finish line. Then the equipment rolled, so it appears there was some "stuff" along with the debris.

Stott's car chattered the tires and headed for the centerline, but the veteran driver drove through it without lifting and moved way up in the field. Hagan also shook and drove out of it, not quite as successfully.

Left Lane: Scott Cannon Runs 9.862/89.87, Now #11
Best prior run: 6.219/230.92, Was #11

Cannon's car shook hard and headed for the wall, so he lifted.
Left Lane: Pat Stoken Runs 6.165/227.69, Now #5
Best prior run: 6.207/228.73, Was #9
Right Lane: Shannon Jenkins Runs 6.170/230.25, Now #4
Best prior run: 6.154/230.65, Was #4

Last pair. Last night, Jenkins said he ran a "soft setup, just to get down the track." This run was soft early, then strong on the top end and a couple hundredths slower than last night. Stoken parlayed a 0.995 60-foot time into a four hundredths improvement at the other end of the track.

That closes the second session with Janis leading the pack at 6.118 and Chip King is on the bump spot at 6.425.

Very nice run by young Cannon to take over the top spot and both ends of the track record, but Jenkins takes over the "Last Man Standing" mantle with a career-best effort, both ET and speed, posting a 0.042 reaction time to Cannon's 0.106.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.187/232.31, Now #7

Last pair. Janis missed his chance at the "Last Man Standing" with a leisurely 0.260 reaction time and "The Iceman" gets the five point bonus. However, Janis moved into the #2 spot on the ladder for tomorrow's eliminations.

Neither driver had any obvious problem, both came up short of the field.
Left Lane: John Russo Runs 12.341/91.59, Now #18
Best prior run: 6.472/228.38, Was #18

Russo's car stood up on the wheelie bars and surged off the line, then slowed. Hamstra made his best run of the weekend to step up a couple notches.
Left Lane: Chip King No Time, Now #17
Best prior run: 6.425/228.54, Was #17

Very nice run by young Cannon to take over the top spot and both ends of the track record, but Jenkins takes over the "Last Man Standing" mantle with a career-best effort, both ET and speed, posting a 0.042 reaction time to Cannon's 0.106.
Left Lane: Quain Stott Runs 6.187/232.31, Now #7

Best prior run: 6.118/230.96, Was #3

Last pair. Janis missed his chance at the "Last Man Standing" with a leisurely 0.260 reaction time and "The Iceman" gets the five point bonus. However, Janis moved into the #2 spot on the ladder for tomorrow's eliminations.

Elimination Round 1
TULSA, Okla. - SUMMIT FastNews - Results of round 1 eliminations in Torco Pro Modified at the 2007 Knoll - Gas Nitro Jam Drag Racing Series, Inaugural Skull Shine Sooner Nationals presented by Wolverine and Academy Sports + Outdoors:
  W/L Driver RT ET Speed

  (W) Eddie Ware (Rupture Street Wear *'67 Camaro 0.083 6.333 226.09
  (L) Chip King (Torco Accelerator *'69 Daytona) 0.197 6.321 219.36

3:41 p.m. Weather conditions: air temperature 83 degrees, relative humidity 67 percent, barometer 29.27 inches, adjusted altitude 2,743 feet, track temperature 122 degrees.

King was way late, but Ware's car was all over the early part of the lane. King closed the gap until half track, then his engine started fading, trailing blue smoke, and Ware opened the gap again for a holeshot win. Looks like some of that blue smoke settled on the track, King will be charged with a "Black Flag."

  (W) Quain Stott (*'63 Corvette) 0.053 6.306 230.33
  (L) Ed Hoover (*'63 Corvette) 0.091 6.343 220.91

4:09 p.m. That took longer than expected.

This was a good race, Stott's holeshot making up half of his winning edge. The two were locked together to 1,000 feet, then Hoover started falling back.

  (W) Matt Hagan (Torco Accelerator *'68 Camaro) 0.105 6.397 223.25
  (L) Jim Halsey ('68 Camaro) 0.109 6.515 220.66

Hagan pedaled it once to get through shake and still had enough to hold Halsey off. He faces Ware in the quarterfinals, Ware has lane choice.
  (W) Scott Cannon (Skull Gear *'68 Firebird) 0.110 6.151 233.16
  (L) Burton Auxier (Auxier Welding '53 Corvette) 0.056 6.274 223.69

Auxier nailed Cannon to the tree, but the red Firebird stormed down the lane to take control around half track and pull away for the win with low ET of the round so far. Scott Cannon's incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.079), 330 ft(-0.042), 660ft(-0.003), 1,000ft(0.032). MOV: 0.0697 seconds (approximately 23 feet).
  (W) Danny Rowe (Red Line Oil *'63 Corvette) 0.123 6.217 230.21
  (L) Harold Martin ('04 Grand Am) 0.112 8.352 116.62

Martin's car started chattering the tires and started to turn sideways, then the chutes came out - maybe intentionally, maybe they shook out, but they straightened him out and he didn't hit anything. Rowe was late, made a good run, but lost lane choice to Cannon in round two.
  (W) Pat Stoken ('68 Camaro) 0.053 6.228 226.54
  (L) Kenny Lang (Pro Mod Source *'53 Corvette) 0.085 6.246 230.41

Stoken led from wire to wire with a holeshot and a slightly quicker run. Lang closed the gap on the top end, but came up short. Pat Stoken's MOV: 0.0507 seconds (approximately 17 feet).
  (W) Mike Janis (Eaton Automotive *'07 Cobalt) 0.076 6.277 232.35
  (L) Rickie Smith (Lucas Oil '63 Corvette) 0.062 6.312 223.10

Smith roared out to a huge lead at half track, then Janis reeled him in and went by in the lights for the win. Mike Janis' incremental margins (negative if behind): 60ft(-0.049), 330 ft(-0.095), 660ft(-0.052), 1,000ft(-0.016). MOV: 0.0212 seconds (approximately 7 feet). However, he lost lane choice to Stoken in the quarterfinals.
  (W) Shannon Jenkins (Speedtech '06 GTO) 0.044 6.231 229.90
  (L) Jason Hamstra (Coan Converters *'63 Corvett 0.066 6.522 221.16

Jenkins made it look easy, slapping a light on the youngster and quick enough to earn lane choice against Stott in round two.

Hagan deep-staged, then launched into shake and pedaled a couple times before giving up. Ware left hard and made a clean, straight pass, right down the groove.
