Our team’s been in a little bit of a slump; we’re gonna fight our way out of it. We’re happy, and I’m really appreciative. It’s a good Father’s Day gift for my Dad so we’re really happy.” The next weekend in Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada, Goforth was the No. 1 qualifier, set low elapsed time and top speed of the meet, lost in the semifinals but Goforth maintained his points lead. US 131 Motorsports Park in Martin, Mich., was awarded the 2016 IHRA championship finale when the event scheduled for Dragway 42 in Ohio was canceled due to construction delays. The battle for the Pro Stock championship was the marquee event with just three markers separating first-place Cary Goforth and second-place Trevor Eman. Both drivers advanced to the semifinals, and the showdown stage was set. “It was nerve racking,” Goforth said. “Normally, I’m intense anyway, but this year probably took a couple years off my life. I don’t know if I could race like that again. I need to stop and smell the roses a little bit more, but I wanted to get this deal done for Kevin.” The cars eased to the starting line in the semifinal shootout - the entire season came down to less than seven seconds of racing. Goforth was first off the line and never looked back taking the win light and his third- consecutive IHRA Pro Stock World Championship 23 with a 6.319-second elapsed time to Eman’s 6.342-second effort. It was his seventh Pro Stock championship overall. “What really made me feel good was seeing the golf carts and scooters coming down there to the top end, and everybody had smiles on their faces,” Goforth said when reflecting on the season. “There were big hugs, and that’s what makes it all worthwhile. It meant a lot to me to see the joy on everybody’s face – it was really a great moment. “I’m just so grateful for our crew and our team – you can’t do it without people. It takes a whole team of people doing what they’re supposed to do and doing it right. I know it’s a cliché, but it’s true: you can’t do this without a whole team working together as one unit. “With all the challenges of being with a new team and driving a different car, it makes the season special. When you look back and start reflecting, other than the good help you had, you always think about the situation, and who could ask for anything better? It was a hell of an achievement, and it was a complete team effort. You’d almost give one of your arms for that! It was definitely special.”
